Australian Medicine MMI: UCAT ANZ School Guide
Undergraduate medicine interviews for 2027 entry in Australia and New Zealand: UNSW, JMP, Sydney and Auckland formats, dates, rural pathways and weights.
Australian Medicine MMI: UCAT ANZ School Guide
For 2027 entry, Australian undergraduate medicine interviews run from late November 2026 to January 2027 (Auckland held its 2026 MMI on 8 September 2026), and they are not all MMIs. UNSW runs a structured interview with two interviewers. The Joint Medical Program runs a Multiple Skills Assessment. Auckland runs a recorded, seven-station MMI with three minutes per answer.
So "Australian MMI practice" is the wrong unit of preparation. A UNSW panel has read your Medicine Application Form and will ask about it. An Auckland recording gives you 30 seconds to prepare and no one to ask. Our view: find your school's row below, then practise that format only. Generic station drills help least at the schools where the interview is not a station circuit.
Every page quoted below was checked on 7 November 2026. Monash's medicine pages returned HTTP 403 to us that day, so this page quotes nothing about Monash; read its pages directly if you applied there. For the NSW and ACT schools we used the dates the universities supplied to UAC, Australia's admissions centre for those states, for courses starting in semester 1, 2027.
Interview formats and dates, 2027 entry
| School | Format | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| UNSW | Structured interview, two interviewers; face-to-face at Kensington | 17 to 22 December 2026; 12 to 13 January 2027 for late results; 18 January 2027 for New Zealand applicants with late results |
| UNSW Rural Entry Admission Pathway | Same structure, at your nearest rural clinical campus | 23 to 27 November 2026 |
| Joint Medical Program (Newcastle/UNE) | Multiple Skills Assessment, with a Personal Qualities Assessment | 23 November to 4 December 2026; mid-January 2027 for interstate non-rural applicants |
| Charles Sturt | Interview | Late November 2026 |
| Western Sydney | Interview | Late November 2026 |
| Sydney (Double Degree Medicine) | "an interview and written assessment", online | 18 December 2026 or 18 January 2027 |
| Auckland | Recorded MMI, seven scenario stations | Tuesday 8 September 2026, online (passed) |
The JMP entry on UAC also gives "30 Nov to 11 Dec 2026" in its interview-dates row, so check your invitation for your day. Sydney's assessment needs an ATAR of 99.95 and no UCAT ANZ.
Two rules from UAC change how you plan:
"Where interviews form part of the selection process, all eligible applicants will be invited to attend, regardless of how they have ordered their preferences."
So putting a school fourth on your UAC list does not cost you its interview. And at UNSW, rescheduling is not allowed: "Once an interview has been scheduled, rescheduling is not permitted."
What each format asks of you
UNSW: a panel that has read your form. UNSW's page: "Interviews are structured and cover a wide range of relevant topics. There will be two interviewers who are either academic staff, medical practitioners or community representatives." And: "Your Medicine Application Form will be shared with your interviewers before your interview." UAC lists what that form contains: "questions on why you want to study medicine at UNSW", "details of your relevant qualities and skills", "your non-academic interests and activities" and "a brief description of your life experience." Prepare by rereading your form and having one story ready behind each claim in it.
Auckland: a camera and a clock. Auckland's 2026 MMI FAQ (published July 2026):
"At each station, applicants will watch a video of someone reading the scenario aloud. After watching, there is a 30-second preparation time and then a three-minute response time."
"Once an applicant begins the formal questions, they will only have one opportunity to respond". A different reviewer marks each answer: "each applicant will be assessed by seven separate people." Auckland adds that "AI is not used to review any student answers." Practise with a phone timer: 30 seconds of notes, three minutes of speech, no restarts.
JMP: an assessment, not a conversation. UAC describes the JMP Assessment as a "Multiple Skills Assessment (MSA)" with a "Personal Qualities Assessment conducted during the MSA." UAC's entry gives no station count or timing, so we give none.
How much the interview counts
Only Auckland publishes a weight, and it changes next cycle. From Auckland's MBChB page, First Year category:
| Auckland First Year entry | GPA (four courses) | UCAT ANZ | MMI | Casper |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 entry | 60% | 15% | 25% | Not used |
| 2028 entry | Minimum 6.0 only | Not used | 50% (a minimum threshold will apply) | 50% |
For 2028 entry, Auckland says "you will be required to sit the University of Auckland situational judgement test (Casper)" instead of UCAT ANZ. Auckland's MMI invitation also differs from Australia's: First Year applicants are first-year university students: for 2027 entry they need "a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 6.0 across the 7 first year courses" listed, with no fails, to be considered for an interview.
UNSW publishes no weight. It selects for interview on "your selection rank and UCAT ANZ overall score only", says "You must receive sufficiently high marks on both selection criteria", and ranks applicants for offers "once the interview round has concluded and their academic results are available." Charles Sturt and Western Sydney list three criteria on UAC: UCAT ANZ results, "an interview" and "academic merit".
The countercase to our view: if your school's interview is a short station circuit and you have one week, general station practice is still worth an hour a day. The point is the order: format first, then content.
Rural health questions and rural pathways
Rural entry is a separate route with its own interview at UNSW. To apply through its Rural Entry Admission Pathway you must have "lived in a defined Australian rural area, MMM 2 - 7 (Modified Monash Model classification system) for at least five consecutive or ten cumulative years between the ages of five (5) and eighteen (18)." UNSW interviews every eligible rural applicant: "all applicants who meet the rurality eligibility are offered an interview as we do not assess academic results until later in the year."
Minimum ATARs drop on the rural routes, per UAC: UNSW 91.00 (general entry 96.00), Charles Sturt and Western Sydney 91.50 (general 95.50), and the JMP 85.00 "for students from a rural/remote high school" (general 94.30).
On a rural route, prepare an answer to why rural practice, not only why medicine. Auckland's MMI page also lists "Social responsibility including an awareness of prevailing community needs".
Constructed example: "Why is it hard to keep doctors in rural towns?"
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's answer. Context (invented): a Year 12 student from a town of 4,000 people.
Weak: "Because rural areas are less developed and doctors prefer cities."
Revised: "In my town the GP clinic has had three different doctors in five years. From what I saw, it was not only pay. One doctor left when her partner could not find work, another when his kids reached high school age. So I think the problem is the whole household, not the doctor alone. If I were planning it, I would look at what keeps families, like jobs for partners and schools, as well as training doctors in rural towns, which is what this pathway does."
The revision works because it reasons from something the applicant saw, names more than one cause, and ends with a proposal the interviewer can push on. It makes no claim about national figures. If you have data, cite where it came from; if not, reason from what you know.
International applicants
UNSW runs a separate route. International applicants apply through the UNSW Applicant Portal, need "UCAT ANZ percentile of 50 or above or ISAT with a minimum score of 165", and submit a Medicine Personal Statement that "will be shared with your interviewers" (UNSW international applicants). The interview "will take place via Zoom" with two interviewers. "There are approximately 300 interview places for international applicants each year. Interviews take place monthly from June to January each year."
If you are also applying to the UK, Newcastle's 2027 admissions policy says it accepts UCAT ANZ from international applicants. The UK medicine interview guide for international students covers the UK formats, and the UK MMI station bank has practice prompts.
Constructed example: one line of a "why UNSW" answer
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's answer.
Weak: "UNSW is a world-class university with an excellent medical program."
Revised: "I want to train in a program with rural clinical campuses, because the hospital I volunteered in had no specialist within three hours."
The weak line could go on any form. The revised line ties a feature UNSW publishes, its rural clinical campuses, to the applicant's own experience, which gives the two interviewers a question to ask.
Questions about Australian medicine interviews
Does UNSW use an MMI?
UNSW's page does not call it one. It describes a structured interview with "two interviewers who are either academic staff, medical practitioners or community representatives."
When are UNSW medicine interviews for 2027 entry?
17 to 22 December 2026 for applicants with results finalised by 14 December, then 12 to 13 January 2027, with 18 January 2027 for New Zealand applicants with late results. Rural pathway interviews are 23 to 27 November 2026.
How much is the Auckland MMI worth?
25% for 2027 First Year entry, alongside GPA at 60% and UCAT ANZ at 15%. For 2028 entry it rises to 50%, with Casper at 50%.
Does my UAC preference order affect interview invitations?
No. UAC says eligible applicants are invited "regardless of how they have ordered their preferences."
Is the Auckland MMI live?
No. It is recorded on an online platform, with 30 seconds to prepare and three minutes to answer each of seven scenarios.
Review the writing you send next
At UNSW, interviewers read your Medicine Application Form or Medicine Personal Statement before they meet you, so that writing sets the questions. Get a free Quick Review of your medicine personal statement against GradPilot's UCAS medicine personal statement rubric, the closest rubric we have: it reads for informed motivation, what you understand about a doctor's work, and reflection shown through what you did.
