Australia RTP: Tuition, Stipend or Both?
RTP can fund different components of an Australian research degree. Check fee offset, living stipend and the separate scholarship application steps.
Australia RTP: Tuition, Stipend or Both?
An Australian RTP scholarship can provide a tuition fee offset, a living stipend, allowances, or a combination. The RTP label alone does not confirm all three. Read the awarded components and your university's scholarship process separately from admission.
RTP is a set of support components
The Australian Government's RTP student FAQ says a university may provide “one or more” forms of support. It distinguishes:
- Fees offset: covers the applicable research-degree tuition fees.
- Stipend: contributes to living costs while undertaking the degree.
- Allowances: support specified additional costs, which can include relocation or health cover.
RTP is for eligible research doctorates and research master's degrees. Do not assume a coursework master's qualifies because the university conducts research or uses a similar degree name.
Our recommendation is to translate every award into those three components before comparing universities. “Scholarship offered” is too imprecise to build a budget around.
An admission application may not be enough
Universities administer RTP application, selection and offers. The government FAQ directs applicants to the chosen institution's process; there is no single national applicant procedure that replaces it.
For example, the University of Sydney's international RTP instructions require commencing applicants to submit their higher-degree-by-research admission application and required documents and a scholarship application form by the relevant deadlines. Current students also have a scholarship-form step. Applying for the degree is not the same as completing that process.
For every university on your shortlist, save the admission instructions, scholarship instructions and applicable award conditions. Record whether scholarship consideration is automatic, requested within admission, or requires another form. Use the university's actual rule for your applicant category; do not copy another university's sequence.
Test the offer before counting on a stipend
Illustrative case, created for this guide: An international applicant receives PhD admission and an RTP fees-offset award. A separate stipend application remains under consideration. Tuition support is established by the award's terms; living support is still unresolved. The applicant should not treat the stipend amount advertised on a general scholarships page as money already awarded.
Use this offer ledger:
| Component | Evidence to look for |
|---|---|
| Tuition | The fee-offset award, covered degree and duration. |
| Living support | A stipend award naming the recipient, amount, start date and payment period. |
| Other costs | An explicit allowance or reimbursement provision, with any limits and conditions. |
| Remaining decisions | Pending scholarship forms, selection outcomes or enrolment conditions. |
Then ask the research scholarships office: “Does my current award include a stipend, or only a fee offset? Which other components have been confirmed?” If two letters appear inconsistent, send both and ask for clarification. Avoid interpreting the more generous letter as automatically overriding the other.
Also compare when tuition support and stipend support end. Separate components deserve separate dates in your planning, even when the university presents them together.
Prepare the right admissions document
Our Australian master's application guide explains why coursework and research applications need different documents. For doctoral applications, distinguish an SOP from a full research proposal before selecting any review.
If your application requests a compatible statement of purpose, the PhD SOP rubric and PhD statement review address that writing. Scholarship selection and award interpretation remain with the university. The PhD application hub links the other preparation guides.
