Berkeley Haas MBA Essays 2026-2027: The 300-Word Goals Essay and What Surrounds It
Berkeley Haas has one required written essay this cycle. It gives you 300 words for three questions: your post-MBA goals, how Haas resources help, and how you'll stay adaptable. Most drafts answer the first two and hand-wave the third. The adaptability question is the easiest to underwrite, so it's where a careful draft can stand out.
Everything below was checked on the Haas essays page, admissions page and FAQ on September 27, 2026. Haas labels the set "the Fall 2026-2027 application cycle." Round 2 closes January 7, 2027, and the FAQ says applications must be submitted "prior to 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time on the deadline date."

Reapplicants also submit a new video essay, a "New essay question (if applicable)," and "A statement outlining how you have improved your candidacy since your last application." Haas doesn't publish a limit for that statement. See MBA reapplicant essays by school.
The frame Haas gives you
Haas introduces the essays by naming its four Defining Principles: "Question the Status Quo, Confidence Without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself." It asks you to "reflect on your experiences, values, and passions so that you may craft thoughtful and authentic responses that demonstrate your alignment with our principles."
Read that as context, not a checklist. Writing "I question the status quo" shows nothing. An action that did it shows the principle. With 300 words, you have room for one or two actions, not four principle names.
What Essay #2 actually tests
Part 1: post-MBA career goals
Name the work: a function or role and an industry, or the problem you want to work on. You don't need a single employer. "Product leader in climate-tech hardware, working on grid-storage deployment" is a goal. "A leader at a mission-driven company" is a category.
The trap: spending 120 words on the backstory. At 300 words, allow one or two sentences of context that makes the goal credible, then move on.
Part 2: how Haas resources help
Tie one or two specific Haas elements to a specific gap in your plan. The check is simple: swap in another school's name. If the sentence still works, it isn't doing the job. Our school-swap test walks through the method.
The trap: a list of courses, clubs and "the Bay Area." Three names without a reason are weaker than one with a reason.
Part 3: staying adaptable
This is the part most drafts skip. Answering it well takes two things:
- A condition. Something plausible that would change your path, such as the market shifting, a technology maturing faster than expected, or a role disappearing.
- A behavior. What you would actually do: a capability you're building, a habit you have already shown, a way you'd test the next move.
A sentence that just claims "I thrive in ambiguity" doesn't answer the question. The strongest answers point to a time you already adapted, then say how you'd do it again.
A workable budget: roughly 110 words on goals, 110 on Haas, 80 on adaptability. Adjust to your material, but don't drop a part to polish another.
Distance Traveled: when to write it
It's optional, and it isn't a second personal statement. Write it if your background, circumstances or experiences really did shape your "perspectives, decisions, and aspirations" in ways the rest of the file doesn't show. The prompt asks what those experiences changed, so write about that. Listing hardships without saying what they changed misses the question.
Skip it if you'd be reaching. An empty optional section costs you nothing.
The Optional Statement
It's for facts that need context: gaps, "academic aberrations," supplemental coursework. Haas encourages bullets. Keep it factual and short. Haas's AI and assistance policy
Haas answers the question directly in its FAQ ("Can I use AI to help write my essays?"):
"Essay responses should reflect your own ideas and experiences, be independently written, and reflect your writing style. You may receive advice on content and editing, including the use of generative artificial intelligence software to assist with readability, but content and final written text must be your own."

Checklist before you submit
- The goal names a function or problem, not just a title or company tier.
- At least one Haas resource is tied to a specific step in the plan and fails the swap test.
- The adaptability answer names a condition that could change and a concrete behavior.
- All three asks fit inside 300 words.
- Distance Traveled is written only if it adds something the file lacks.
- Video essay: no longer than 2 minutes, two attempts total.
