Econ Predoc: One Year or Two Before a PhD?

Economics predocs do not all have the same two-year commitment. Read the specific appointment and renewal terms, then work backward from your PhD application deadlines to determine what research evidence and informed recommendations you could realistically have by submission.

Read the appointment, not just the predoc label

SIEPR asks applicants to state a preference for a one- or two-year appointment. Its currently posted program year runs July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027, with later starts discretionary and a consecutive second-year renewal dependent on program need and funding. Chicago Booth's Fama-Miller Center describes a two-year research professional program supporting finance research. It also permits one course per quarter for credit. That is a specific program description, not a universal predoc requirement or a promise that every useful course will fit your schedule. Fama-Miller research professional program.

Our recommendation: choose a PhD application cycle using both your actual employment commitment and the evidence you expect to have. Counting months until the job ends can obscure how little time precedes the application deadline.

Build the evidence timeline backward

Start with the earliest PhD deadline you intend to meet. Then add these dates:

1. Appointment start and agreed end: Use the offered terms. Separate an initial appointment from a possible renewal, and confirm any expectations about when fellows apply onward.
2. First meaningful contribution: Discuss when you might own a defined analysis, resolve a research problem or produce a documented result. These are planning milestones, not promises that a project will succeed on schedule.
3. Course assessment: If additional coursework matters, record when an actual grade would become available. Being enrolled at submission is different from having a completed result.
4. Recommendation observation: Ask when a supervisor could reasonably assess your work in detail. A prominent affiliation cannot substitute for time spent observing your decisions and progress.

Finally, mark which items already exist and which remain forecasts. If most of the hoped-for evidence arrives after submission, consider whether the later cycle better matches your purpose, subject to the actual job and renewal arrangements. More elapsed time is useful only if it produces relevant learning and observable work.

Worked example: July start, November application

Illustrative case: An applicant starts a predoc in July and plans to submit a PhD application in November of the same year. The role may last a year or longer, but the application will reflect roughly four months in the position.

They should ask what they could realistically contribute during those months and whether their supervisor would have enough observation to write a substantive letter. If a useful course ends in December, its final grade would not already be part of a November submission. Check each target's later-update policy separately rather than assuming the new grade will be reviewed.

Applying the following autumn could allow more observation, but a one-year appointment may already have ended, and a renewal may be uncertain. A two-year role creates a different calendar; it does not authorize leaving early or guarantee stronger admissions results. The right plan is the one that aligns actual commitments with the evidence the application needs.
