Educational or School Psychology PhD: Which?

An educational psychology PhD is not automatically equivalent to school-psychology training. If you want to work as a school psychologist, investigate the specific program's practice preparation and credential pathway before choosing by department name or doctoral title.

Inspect the program within the department

Indiana University's school-psychology guidance describes both specialist and doctoral training. Its EdS focuses on practitioner preparation; the PhD adds a stronger research component, including the dissertation, alongside professional training. These examples do not establish that every educational psychology doctorate is purely theoretical, or that every school-psychology degree qualifies its holder for every role. A school credential and authorization for independent psychological practice are separate questions. Verify the requirements for the jurisdiction and work you intend to pursue.

Work backward from the intended activity

Build a comparison around four questions:

1. What do you want to do? Distinguish studying learning and development, conducting school-based research, and delivering professional school-psychology services. You may want more than one, but each needs appropriate preparation.
2. Who determines the required credential? Identify the relevant education or professional authority for the intended location and role. Ask about the particular program, rather than assuming a doctorate is sufficient evidence.
3. What training does the program actually include? Read its accreditation and professional-licensure disclosures, required supervised practice, internship arrangements and curriculum. Confirm which statements apply to your track and entry cohort.
4. How much research is required? Examine the dissertation, methods sequence and adviser fit. A practice-oriented goal does not remove a PhD's research obligations.

Keep the answers in separate columns for research preparation and professional preparation. Strong faculty research in a school-related subject does not, on its own, establish that the program trains students for school-psychology practice.

An illustrative assessment-and-research goal

Illustrative case: An applicant wants to conduct school assessments and investigate how assessment tools perform across different learning contexts. They compare an educational-research PhD, a school-psychology PhD and a school-psychology EdS.

The educational-research doctorate might match the research question closely, but the applicant still needs evidence of the required professional training. They should not infer that training from the department's name.

A school-psychology PhD may combine the two interests, but the applicant must be ready for substantial research as well as the program's supervised practice. An EdS may offer relevant practitioner preparation with a different research structure. The right choice depends on the actual programs and the intended credential, not an assumption that the longest degree is always the appropriate one.
