When Does ERAS Open in 2026 vs When Can You Submit?

Two different dates get collapsed into "when does ERAS open," and the difference matters. June 4, 2026 is when MyERAS opens for building: you register your token, enter your biography, load your experiences, assign letter writers, and draft your personal statement. You cannot send anything to a program yet. September 2, 2026 is the first day you can actually submit to programs.

So the honest answer to "when does ERAS open" is: the platform opens June 4, but the application goes live September 2. The eleven-plus weeks in between are working time, not waiting time.

The Sept 2 to Sept 23 Rule Every Applicant Gets Wrong

This is the rule that should shape your whole plan, and almost no timeline states it plainly.

Submitting early does not get you reviewed early

Applicants can submit starting September 2. Programs cannot open a single application until September 23. Anything you submit in that three-week window is flattened to the same starting line: to a program, an application submitted at 9:00 a.m. on September 2 and one submitted at 11:00 p.m. on September 22 arrive identically on September 23. There is no queue, no timestamp advantage, no first-mover edge inside the window.

What the Sept 2–23 window is actually for

Because the batch does not open until September 23, the marginal value of rushing a thin application out on September 2 is negative — you lock a draft that could have used two more weeks. Treat the window as a final-pass buffer, not a race. If a rotation is still finishing, a letter is still landing, or your statement still reads generic, use the time. The correct move is to submit when the application is genuinely ready, any time before September 23, not to sprint on day one.

The real deadline is Sept 23, and the race is after it

The date that governs your outcome is September 23 — the day the batch unlocks and rolling review begins. From there, review, screening, and interview invitations move on a genuine first-come basis, which is why a strong, complete application ready by September 23 beats a rushed one submitted three weeks earlier. Front-load your effort into being ready for the 23rd, not into beating a clock that does not exist between the 2nd and the 23rd.

Month-by-Month ERAS 2027 Planner

Here is the full cycle in sequence, each date paired with what you actually do that month. It merges the ERAS calendar and the NRMP Match calendar into one view, because you have to track both portals.

June 2026: season opens, build your application

June 4 is the build gate. This is the month to register your token, enter your biography, load your experiences and most-meaningful entries, and — critically — assign your letter writers so their letters have time to land before September. IMGs also get their ECFMG/Intealth token starting June 24.

July–August 2026: personal statement, letters, transcripts

This is the drafting stretch. Confirm every letter is uploaded, transcripts are in, and your statement is doing the work a program director needs it to do. Do not treat late August as a deadline scramble — the batching rule below means you have more runway than the September 2 date suggests.

September 2026: submit, register, review begins

Submit to programs starting September 2. Register with NRMP by September 15 (this is a separate account from ERAS). Programs begin reviewing on September 23. Nothing you do between the 2nd and the 23rd changes when a program sees you.

October 2026–January 2027: interview season

Invitations start within days of September 23 and peak in November and December. Interview, keep signal follow-through consistent, and hold your rank thinking loosely until you have seen your programs.

February–March 2027: rank lists, certification, Match Week

Rank order list entry opens February 1. The deadline that ends applicants is March 3 — the day you must certify your list. Match Week runs March 15–19, with SOAP for unmatched applicants, and Match Day results release March 19.

The Personal Statement Window: Where It Fits in the Timeline

The calendar hands you a roughly 13-week drafting window (June 4 to September 2) and then a three-week grace window (September 2 to September 23) where submitting later costs you nothing — but a weak statement costs you everything, because it is the one part of the application a program reads in your own voice.

Use the time the way the batching rule allows. Draft in June and July, get the length and one-page format right — the MyERAS system permits up to 28,000 characters, but the one-page reader norm is the real target, not the ceiling — and study what a strong residency statement actually looks like before you polish. Then, in late August or the Sept 2–23 window, do a final pass rather than a rushed submit.

If you want an outside read before you lock it, understanding how a residency personal statement is read — what a program director looks for in specialty fit, evidence, and follow-through — is more useful than another line edit. A final, low-drift review before you commit the statement is a sensible use of the grace window, since you cannot swap the assigned statement casually once programs are reviewing.

MSPE Release: It's Sept 23, Not October 1 Anymore

A stale date still circulates in the market: that the MSPE (the Dean's Letter) releases October 1. For the 2027 cycle that is wrong. The AAMC 2027 timeline lists MSPE availability on the same line as program review — September 23, 2026. Your MSPE unlocks with everything else on the 23rd, not on a separate October date. Some society and advising pages still carry the old October 1 line; treat it as superseded for 2027.

For IMGs, ECFMG advises having the MSPE and transcript uploaded by roughly September 11 so the documents are visible when review opens on the 23rd. The theme is consistent: everything programs see unlocks September 23.

IMGs: The ECFMG/Intealth Timeline You Also Have to Track

International medical graduates run a second calendar alongside ERAS. Residency tokens become available June 24, 2026 through the MyIntealth portal (with the ECFMG token fee), and you register on MyERAS from there. The practical deadline to watch is the roughly September 11 upload target for your MSPE and transcript, so they are visible when programs open applications on September 23. Program Signals and Geographic Preferences (2027)

Program signaling is now near-universal: about 93% of participating specialties offer signals for the 2027 season. Allotments vary by specialty — some run a single tier, some a two-tier gold/silver system — so check your specialty's count rather than assuming a number. Signals and geographic/setting preferences are selected inside MyERAS and locked when you apply; they are part of the submitted application, not a later add-on.

Most specialties accept geographic and setting preferences, but Otolaryngology, Orthopedic Surgery, and Plastic Surgery (Integrated) opted out of both for 2027. Know your specialty's rules before September 2, because you cannot change them after you submit.

Does My Specialty Even Use ERAS? The ResidencyCAS Carve-Out

Not every specialty applies through ERAS. Emergency Medicine and OB/GYN apply through ResidencyCAS (Liaison), which runs its own similar-but-separate calendar with a single personal statement sent to all programs. After You Submit: NRMP, Rank Lists, and Match Week 2027

ERAS gets your application to programs; NRMP runs the Match, and it is a separate registration. Main Match registration opens September 15, 2026, with the standard deadline January 29, 2027 before a $50 late fee. Rank order list entry opens February 1, and the deadline that matters most is March 3 — the day you must certify your list. An uncertified ROL does not participate in the Match, full stop.

Match Week runs March 15–19, 2027. Unmatched applicants enter SOAP that week, and Match Day results release March 19.
