Indian Students Applying to UK Medicine 2027

Of the eight UK medical school course pages we checked, only Imperial publishes how many places go to overseas students: 74 Overseas against 271 Home for 2026 entry. The others publish no number, so Indian applicants cannot choose schools by quota.

What they can choose by is published process. Some schools rank international applicants on UCAT alone; some read your statement and reference before they look at UCAT. That difference should decide your medicine choices; Glasgow reminds applicants to "limit your choice to four medical schools only", so each one has to count. If you are already drafting, the UCAS medicine personal statement guide for 2027 owns the writing; this page owns the planning.

Every university, UCAS and UCAT page quoted below was checked on 7 November 2026. The UCAS deadline for 2027 medicine entry was 15 October 2026 and has passed, so this page serves two readers: Indian applicants waiting on 2027 interviews and decisions, and those planning for 2028 entry.

What UK schools publish for international applicants

SchoolOverseas places published? How international applicants reach interviewInterview
ImperialYes: "For 2026 entry, the number of Home places is 271 and Overseas places was 74."UCAT helps shortlisting "but are not the sole factor"; "we normally interview the top 1/3 of applicants"MMIs
Newcastle (2027 entry)NoAfter the academic screen, "UCAT score will form the sole basis for ranking and selection for interview""a panel of two interviewers either on campus or remotely"
Sheffield (2027 entry)NoAll applicants ranked by UCAT; minimum "1800/2700 for 2027 entry""International applicants will be invited to an online panel interview."
Edinburgh (2027 entry)No; "there are limited places for international students"Academic assessment plus SJT and total UCAT, then "We invite the top-scoring 800 applicants (approximately)"Assessment day on campus or online
GlasgowNoFocus on "academic qualifications obtained and predicted, personal statement and reference"; UCAT used later "for allocation of interview"Interview (format not stated on the page)

The King's College London, Liverpool and Southampton course pages we checked publish no overseas count either. Leeds's page returned an error page on 7 November 2026, so we quote nothing from it.

Our view: pick your four by process. With a strong UCAT, schools that rank international applicants on UCAT (Newcastle, Sheffield) are where that score does the most work. With a middling UCAT and a strong statement and reference, look for schools that read those first, as Glasgow describes. The countercase: if a school's page does not say how it ranks international applicants, you do not know, and a school with an unknown method is a weaker pick than one whose method fits your profile. Unknown: no England-wide figure for international medicine places appears on any page we checked, so we state none.

Your CBSE or ISC grades

Imperial is the only school above whose page names Indian boards. For "India: 12th Standard CBSE – AISSCE or CISCE – ISC boards", Imperial's minimum is "91% overall", including "95% / 90% in Biology and Chemistry (grades any order)" and "90% in Mathematics or Physics".

Sheffield asks international applicants to "write to the Medical Admissions Office with full details of your qualifications". Edinburgh adds a rule that matters if you resit: "We will only assess the first attempt you make at an official examination in a required subject."

English: Sheffield asks for IELTS "7.5 overall with no less than 7.0 in each component"; Imperial says "All applicants must meet our higher level English language requirement."

Tests and timelines

UCAT abroad. The UCAT "is delivered in Pearson test centres across the UK and in 130+ countries worldwide", and the UCAT FAQs list the fee for "Tests taken outside the UK" as £115. The 2026 testing cycle ran from 13 July to a last test day of 24 September 2026. For 2028 entry, UCAT says "Dates for the 2027 test cycle will be published by February 2027" and booking instructions "will be published in March 2027".

A UCAT score lasts one cycle. Newcastle: "UCAT scores can only be used to support an application made in the year in which they are achieved". A 2026 score does not carry to a 2028 application.

Decisions for 2027 entry. UCAS says universities must decide by "12 May 2027 – if you submit your application by 13 January 2027", and "You can only reply to any offers once you have a decision back from all your choices."

Deposits. At Edinburgh, an international offer holder who makes Edinburgh their Firm choice pays a deposit "equal to one-third of the first year's fees"; "For 2026 entry, the deposit was £18,217."

Visa. The visa process is outside this page; the official starting point is the Student visa page on gov.uk.

Interviews: what changes for you

Sheffield gives international applicants an online panel instead of the MMI home applicants sit, Newcastle generally a panel of two, and Newcastle's selectors do not see your statement before or during the interview. UK medicine interviews for international students covers formats, the NHS facts to know, and how to answer "why the UK" and "will you stay".

Your UCAS statement: what changes for an Indian applicant

The three UCAS questions are the same for everyone. What changes is which evidence earns its space: coaching results, a relative's hospital or a list of exam ranks say little about a doctor's work. Imperial lists "Personal statement" among its application criteria and assesses "evidence of commitment to the values of the NHS Constitution" at interview, so the statement should show you understand the system you are applying to.

Our recommendation: spend one or two sentences in question 1 on something you understood about doctors' work from a patient-facing setting you saw, and make the UK link specific and checkable. Do not argue that UK medicine is better than Indian medicine.

Constructed example: question 1 opening

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Rohan Iyer, ISC board, Bengaluru, applying for 2028 entry.

Weak (59 words): "Since childhood I have dreamed of becoming a doctor. My uncle is a famous cardiologist and I have seen how respected doctors are in India. I scored in the top 1% in a national olympiad, which shows my dedication. I want to study in the UK because it has world-class universities and the NHS is admired across the world."

Revised (79 words): "For six weeks I helped at a free eye camp my school ran in a village outside Bengaluru. The ophthalmologist spent most of each consultation not on the eye but on persuading patients to return for surgery. I want a career that is that much about trust. I am applying to the UK because I want to train in a system where, in the NHS Constitution's words, access is 'based on clinical need, not an individual's ability to pay'."

The revision replaces status (uncle, rank) with one observed piece of a doctor's work and gives a UK reason the applicant can defend at interview. It mentions no other country's system as worse.

Before you submit, run the statement through the UCAS medicine personal statement rubric.

A five-step plan for 2028 entry

  1. February–March 2027: check the UCAT 2027 dates and booking page, and find your nearest centre in India.
  2. Spring 2027: for each school on your long list, record from its own course page: whether it publishes overseas places, how it ranks international applicants, and its interview format.
  3. Summer 2027: sit the UCAT; your score decides which ranking method suits you.
  4. After results: choose up to four medical schools by process using the table above.
  5. Early autumn 2027: confirm the 2028 medicine deadline on UCAS (for 2027 entry it was 15 October 2026), then submit.

Questions Indian applicants ask

Is there a cap on international medicine students in the UK?

We found no government page stating one, and none of the eight course pages we checked states a cap. Imperial is the only one that publishes an overseas number.

Can I sit the UCAT in India?

UCAT says its test runs in Pearson centres "in 130+ countries worldwide" and tells overseas candidates to "Use the test centre locator to find your nearest centre." Check the locator when 2027 booking opens.

Does NEET count?

None of the eight pages we checked mentions NEET. UK medicine entry uses your school-leaving qualification plus UCAT at the schools above.

Will I be interviewed online?

At Sheffield, yes: "International applicants will be invited to an online panel interview." At Newcastle, either: "on campus or remotely". Edinburgh holds its assessment day on campus or online.
