Will Your Master's Credits Shorten a PhD?

A master's can reduce some PhD coursework, but transferred credits do not automatically shorten the doctorate. Check which degree the units would count toward, whether approval is required and which research milestones remain. An en-route master's can change the credit calculation.

The degree being awarded changes the ceiling

Boston University's Graduate School of Arts & Sciences distinguishes three limits: up to 32 transferred units for a PhD without an en-route master's; up to eight toward that master's; and up to sixteen toward completing both degrees in the same program. Do not reduce these policies to “a master's takes two years off.” A numerical ceiling, permission to skip a particular course and permission to finish a degree are separate decisions.

Build an award-by-award record

Start with your actual completed coursework. For each course, record the institution, level, grade, units, syllabus and whether it already counted toward an awarded degree. Then add the proposed destination and degree.

Ask the program to distinguish these outcomes:

• Transferred units: prior study counts toward a numerical degree requirement.
• Course waiver: a particular requirement is waived, potentially leaving other unit requirements to satisfy.
• Placement into advanced study: the program allows an advanced course, which does not by itself establish either of the first two outcomes.
• Research progress: examinations, proposal approval and dissertation expectations follow their own requirements.

Keep the approval date beside each answer. If the program assesses requests only after enrollment, the admission-stage calculation should remain provisional. Do not treat the maximum allowed transfer as the number your record will receive.

An illustrative thirty-unit comparison

Illustrative case: An applicant has thirty prior graduate units and is considering BU GRS doctoral study. Assume for this comparison that the units are potentially eligible; the example does not establish that BU will approve them.

For PhD-only completion, thirty units fall below the published university ceiling of thirty-two. For completion of both the master's and PhD within the same program, thirty exceed the combined ceiling of sixteen. The intended award structure changes the possible accounting before any individual course is assessed.

There is another question if those units already satisfied a completed master's: they cannot be counted toward a second GRS master's under the cited rule. A claim that the applicant can simply bring the old degree across would miss that restriction.

Even a favorable decision does not show when the dissertation will be finished. The useful request is a proposed course and milestone plan after the credit decision, not a promised graduation date calculated from units alone.
