PA School Waitlist, Alternate List and Hold Status
What PA school waitlist, alternate and hold statuses mean, when lists move, how long programs take after interviews, and a status-check email.
PA School Waitlist, Alternate List and Hold Status
A PA school waitlist or alternate list means the program would admit you if a seat opens. Hold means it has not decided yet. Seats open when admitted applicants decline, and PAEA asks programs to give admits at least two weeks to reply. So seats open as other programs' reply deadlines pass, not on a weekly schedule.
Our view: your best tool on a PA waitlist is a calendar of other programs' reply deadlines and start dates, not a weekly email. Every seat that comes back follows someone else's deadline, and the programs quoted below publish theirs.
Every CASPA, PAEA and program page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. The PAEA program directory figures are what programs report about themselves for the 2026-2027 cycle.
What each status means
| Status | What it means | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Waitlist or alternate list | Admissible; offered a seat only if one opens | PAEA: "Most programs establish an alternate or wait list in case a student gives up his or her slot in the class." |
| Ranked waitlist | Seats go down the list in order | West Chester: "Waitlist rankings will be released to applicants by April 15th." |
| Unranked waitlist | The committee reconsiders the whole list each time a seat opens | Northwestern: "the Admissions Committee will meet to consider all candidates who have opted to join the unranked waitlist" |
| Hold | No decision yet; the program will decide later | A separate code from "Wait List" in WebAdMIT, the system CASPA programs use |
The hold row needs care. PAEA's 2023 PA Program Admissions Resource, written for programs, lists the WebAdMIT decision codes, and "Hold" and "Wait List" are separate entries. It also says "Decision codes and types should be determined by the program." So what "hold" means at a program is that program's definition. If its email does not say whether hold means "not yet reviewed" or "reviewed, decision later," ask once.
PAEA adds a timing point: "Some programs choose to notify admitted students immediately while holding waitlist placements and rejections until the end of the admissions cycle." No news after an interview can mean you are on a list the program has not announced yet.
Why PA waitlists move when they do
Four published rules set the rhythm.
- The reply window. PAEA's CASPA Admissions Code of Cooperation asks programs to "Notify applicants of acceptance in a timely manner and allow applicants at least two weeks to reply for acceptance." Northwestern's deposit "must be received within 10 business days from the date of the offer letter"; West Chester's is due "within 14 days of official acceptance."
- The five-day rule. The 2026-2027 CASPA Applicant Agreement requires applicants, within five calendar days of matriculating, to tell every other program still considering them that they withdraw. The decline and withdraw email templates quote the clause.
- Matriculation disclosure. Under clause 22 of the same agreement, PAEA tells every program you applied to when you matriculate, so programs learn when their admits start somewhere else.
- Start dates are spread across the year. In PAEA's directory, the 333 CASPA programs list start months of August (98), January (87), May (62), June (33), September (28), July (13), October (7) and other or none (5). A January-start program fills its last seats in winter; an August-start program can still be moving in July.
Lists close on published dates too. West Chester "maintains a waitlist until 1 week prior to the start of program orientation." Northwestern's waitlist runs until "the closure of the waitlist at the start of the Program academic year in late May or early June."
How long PA programs take after interviews
| Program | Review type | When decisions come |
|---|---|---|
| OHSU (no year stated) | Rolling "as CASPA verifies them" | "The committee makes final decisions by the end of December." |
| UT Southwestern (no cycle label) | September 1 deadline | "January - February: Admissions Committee makes final acceptance decisions" |
| West Chester (no cycle label) | Rolling interviews, August to February | Status "within 4 weeks of interview" |
| Northwestern (2026-27 cycle) | Rolling | Offers "at any point after the interview day"; the waitlist opens once "all seats in the class have been committed" |
Across the PAEA CASPA Program Directory (2026-2027 cycle), 230 of 333 programs describe their admission type as rolling ("Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis") and 100 as regular ("All applications are reviewed once the set deadline has passed"); 3 give no information. Rolling programs can admit, waitlist and deny all season. Regular programs review after the deadline passes, so their decisions can arrive in one window, like UT Southwestern's January to February.
The countercase: a published decision date does not tell you when your waitlist moves. Northwestern says plainly that the number of offers to waitlisted candidates "varies significantly by year" and that "no prediction or estimate can be offered." Plan around deadlines; do not plan around odds nobody publishes.
A constructed waitlist calendar
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's situation. Context (invented): Teodor Vance is on the alternate list at Merriwether University, an invented program starting in August 2027. Teodor knows the reply windows of two other invented programs because both publish them. The dates are our arithmetic from those rules.
| Date | What happens | What it means for Teodor's list |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, January 15, 2027 | Kilbride College sends offers with a 14-day reply window | Merriwether admits who also get Kilbride offers must answer Kilbride by Friday, January 29; any who choose Kilbride release a Merriwether seat |
| Monday, February 22, 2027 | Calder State sends offers; deposit due in 10 business days | Reply deadline Monday, March 8, 2027 (no federal holiday falls in that window); a second chance for Merriwether seats to open |
| May and June 2027 | Programs that start in May and June begin classes | Admits who matriculate there must withdraw elsewhere within five calendar days |
| Monday, August 9, 2027 | Merriwether's list closes one week before its August 16 orientation | Last day a seat can come to Teodor |
Teodor's moves follow the table. One letter of continued interest after the alternate-list email. One update in mid-January, before Kilbride's January 29 deadline. Nothing else unless Merriwether asks.
What helps while you wait
- One letter. Send a letter of intent to your one top choice and letters of continued interest to the others. The PA letter of intent and continued interest guide explains why intent goes to one program.
- One real update, if something changed. The PA school update letter guide lists what counts.
- Fast replies. The Code asks applicants to "Respond in a timely manner to ALL notices and questions received from CASPA staff and PA programs." A waitlist offer comes with a reply deadline like any other offer.
- Current contact details. The Code also asks you to "Update CASPA with any changes in contact information" and to send "the same updates directly to the programs."
- No weekly emails. Northwestern's FAQ says a status email almost always gets the same answer: the application is still under review.
If you hold an offer elsewhere while you wait, the PA school seat deposit guide covers what holding it costs.
The status-check email
Send it only after the program's own stated timeline has passed. Once your application is Verified, CASPA tells you to "direct any questions about its status to the program(s) you applied to" (CASPA notifications and status), and CASPA's customer service page lists "Status of your application after it has been verified" among the questions for the program (CASPA Customer Service).
Constructed example: asking about a hold after the stated timeline
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. Context (invented): Teodor interviewed at Kilbride College on October 9. Kilbride's page says applicants hear within four weeks. Six weeks have passed, and the portal shows "Hold."
Subject: Status question, Teodor Vance, CAS ID 0000000000
Dear Kilbride College PA Admissions Office,
I interviewed on October 9, 2026, and my portal status now shows Hold. Your website says applicants hear within four weeks of the interview, so I wanted to ask whether Hold means my file is still being reviewed or that a decision will come later in the cycle, and when I might expect it.
Kilbride remains a program I would be glad to attend.
Thank you, Teodor Vance
That is 82 words including the subject line. It names the interview date and the program's own published timeline, so the question reads as a check, not a complaint. It asks what the status means, which the program can answer even when it cannot answer "will I get in."
Questions about PA school waitlists
Is an alternate list the same as a waitlist?
PAEA's resource treats them as one list: "an alternate or wait list." Read your program's email for whether the list is ranked.
What does hold status mean at a PA school?
It means no decision yet. The exact meaning is each program's own, since PAEA says decision codes "should be determined by the program."
When do PA waitlists move?
After admits' reply deadlines (at least two weeks after each round of offers under the Code), and again as other programs' classes start and their students withdraw within five days.
Should I email a PA program about my waitlist position?
Once, after its stated timeline passes, using the email above. Ask about your status, not your odds.
Can I ask where I am on the waitlist?
You can ask at a program with a ranked list. West Chester releases rankings by April 15. An unranked list like Northwestern's has no position to give.

Get a free review of your letter of interest
Get a free Quick Review of your letter of interest before it goes to a program that has you on its list. GradPilot's letter of intent and interest rubric, built for MD and DO letters, checks the two things a waitlist letter has to do: tie your reason to that program, and state your interest no stronger than it is. If your news is the point of the letter, the update letter rubric reads for what changed.
