Political Science PhD: Which Subfield Fits?

Choose the primary political-science subfield that best matches your central research question within that university's application structure. Map the question, training needs and faculty coverage separately; a count of interesting professors is a weak substitute for that decision.

Start with the institution's actual categories

Yale asks applicants to select a primary subfield from eight listed options: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political economy, political theory, quantitative empirical methods, qualitative and archival methods, and formal theory. Princeton's Politics listing requires applicants to choose an academic subplan. It describes broad training across political-science fields, including public law alongside other areas. The practical implication is that one portable label may not work across your shortlist. A project can remain coherent while its closest institutional category differs. Neither source promises a particular admissions reader, supervisor or easy field change after enrollment.

Build a project-to-field map

Use four short entries before selecting a field:

1. Central question: State what you want to explain, interpret or evaluate. “Courts” names a topic; it does not yet distinguish a question about institutional behavior from one about political legitimacy.
2. Core training: Identify the substantive literatures and theoretical approaches you need. Then record methods training separately. Using interviews or statistics does not automatically make methodology your primary research field.
3. Local structure: Compare that question and training with the department's field descriptions and the actual application choices. Note any mismatch between a catalog label and the form.
4. Faculty coverage: Check whether the relevant people and research areas exist within that structure. Use this to test the proposed fit, not to choose whichever field contains the largest number of recognizable names.

If two fields remain plausible, write one sentence explaining why each would be primary. A choice supported only by one professor's affiliation is less developed than one supported by the question and training you want.

Work through a constitutional-courts example

Illustrative case: An applicant is interested in constitutional courts and faculty working across comparative politics, public law and political theory.

One version of the project asks why courts constrain executives differently across countries. Comparative politics is a plausible starting point to investigate. Another asks when judicial review is democratically legitimate; political theory may better match that central question. A third centers judicial institutions and legal politics, making a public-law training area relevant where the institution offers it. These are reasoning examples, not official classification decisions.

At Yale, the applicant must map the project to the published primary-field options instead of assuming a standalone public-law selection exists. At Princeton, they can investigate the published public-law training while checking which academic subplans the application actually offers.

If the form and program descriptions remain unclear, ask the graduate office a focused question describing the research issue and the two plausible categories. Do not assume that the answer assigns a supervisor or permits a later switch.

Keep the selection and the statement consistent

Once you choose the field, a separate purpose statement should accurately explain the preparation and research interests behind it.
