Social Work PhD: Need Two Years of Practice?
Two years of post-master's practice is not a universal social-work PhD entry requirement. Separate the doctorate's admission rules from the qualifications for your intended teaching role: going straight into research training can leave a later practice-experience requirement unresolved.
Read required and preferred literally
Missouri's social-work PhD admissions page lists two years of post-master's practice experience as preferred. That wording does not make it a mandatory condition for every applicant. The page also has distinct prior-degree or relevant-work entry routes, so applicants should read the full requirements for their background rather than treating one preference as the entire admissions policy. CSWE describes a separate qualification for teaching practice courses in accredited bachelor's and master's social-work programs: faculty need an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program and at least two years of post-master's social-work practice experience. Programs determine which of their courses count as practice courses. CSWE clarification of faculty qualifications.
For non-practice courses, CSWE's explanation leaves faculty qualifications to the individual program. A school may set its own expectations. This is therefore neither a universal ban on teaching before two years of practice nor a rule that a research PhD automatically satisfies the practice-course standard.
CSWE also allows an employer to request a waiver of its minimum qualifications, without guaranteed approval. Its guidance identifies co-teaching with qualified faculty as another possible arrangement.
Build two separate career columns
Before deciding whether to apply now or work first, write down:

Ask the doctoral program how it evaluates applicants with limited post-master's practice. Separately, ask about the qualifications associated with the teaching work you are targeting. These questions can have different answers without either policy being contradictory.
CSWE excludes academic appointments from post-degree practice experience. Document other work's duties and dates; the relevant program assesses whether it meets the practice definition. Work before the master's cannot supply a post-master's requirement.
An illustrative new MSW graduate
Illustrative case: A recent graduate of a CSWE-accredited MSW program wants to study social-service delivery and eventually teach practice courses in an accredited MSW program. They have strong research interests but no post-master's practice experience.
Missouri's published preference does not, by itself, prohibit them from applying now. They should still investigate the complete entry requirements and make an honest case for their research preparation; this does not predict admission.
Their longer-term teaching plan has a separate gap. Beginning a PhD immediately would not automatically supply the two years of practice identified in CSWE's explanation. The applicant needs a realistic plan to gain qualifying experience and confirmation about what work would count.
If their intended role changes to teaching non-practice research courses, the qualification question also changes. They should investigate the hiring program's requirements instead of applying the practice-course rule to every academic job.
Explain the research decision honestly
Do not confuse a research PhD with the purposes discussed in the professional doctorate statement guide. Choose the training that matches the work you want to do.
