Sociology PhD: Which Writing Sample Fits?

A sociology PhD writing sample can come from another field where the department permits it. Choose an admissible piece that demonstrates your own analysis; authorship, coherence and excerpt instructions can matter more than a sociology course label.

Topic flexibility and authorship are separate rules

UC Davis allows a writing sample on a topic outside sociology. It asks for one English-language document that represents the applicant's scholarly interests and level of achievement; applicants with a master's may submit their thesis. UC Davis Sociology admissions.

Chicago's Sociology FAQ asks for a single-authored sample and strongly favors one cohesive piece. Its instructions specify up to 8,000 words or 30 pages, with no minimum page requirement. These rules answer different questions. Davis's flexibility about topic does not override Chicago's authorship requirements. Likewise, being published does not make a coauthored paper the right submission where the department asks for work written solely by you.

Choose the sample in this order

1. Check admissibility first. Record the target's authorship, language, document-count, length and formatting instructions. Remove pieces that do not meet them before comparing prestige or topical relevance.
2. Locate your strongest analysis. Identify where the piece develops a question, explains the evidence or method, considers a competing interpretation, and reaches a supported conclusion. A familiar subject with little analysis may be weaker evidence than a rigorous project in a neighboring field.
3. Check that it stands alone. Give a reader enough context to understand the question and evaluate the argument. Do not paste together disconnected passages merely to display several projects.
4. Prepare the permitted version. If an excerpt is allowed, label it and supply the context the department requests. Keep the original available so you can check that shortening has not changed the argument.

Our recommendation is to write a one-sentence reason for selecting each candidate sample. “This is my most prestigious publication” is less informative than “This piece lets the reader assess decisions and analysis I made independently.” That comparison does not require pretending your earlier research was already sociology.

Worked example: psychology thesis or economics paper

Illustrative case: An applicant has a single-authored psychology thesis on how workers describe unfair treatment and a published economics paper written with three collaborators. The economics paper looks more impressive on the CV; the thesis gives a clearer view of the applicant's independent reasoning.

For Chicago, the published paper does not meet the cited single-authorship instruction. The applicant should examine a coherent thesis section, check the length and formatting rules, and explain omitted material if submitting an excerpt. They should not remove coauthors' names to make the paper appear independently written.

For Davis, the psychology topic is not automatically disqualifying. The applicant can select the piece that best demonstrates their scholarly work while following Davis's own document instructions. These examples support a submission decision, not a prediction of which argument an admissions committee will prefer.
