Statistics PhD After an Applied Master's?

An applied statistics master's can support a statistics PhD application, but it does not automatically satisfy mathematical-preparation requirements. Check each department's real-analysis rule against what your courses actually assessed before treating the degree as sufficient.

Two departments, different preparation language

UC Davis lists advanced calculus or real analysis among its PhD minimum requirements: one semester or two quarters at a level equivalent to its Mathematics 127A and 127B, alongside linear algebra. The same page says students lacking sufficient mathematics coursework may be admitted with the expectation of acquiring that background during the first year. Berkeley describes the preparation it typically seeks as strong performance in real analysis, an equivalent class, or comparable mathematical preparation in another quantitative major. It considers strong computing and applied-statistics experience positively and acknowledges that some mathematics can develop after arrival. Audit the work behind the transcript

Make a short evidence sheet with three sections:

1. Mathematical reasoning: Identify courses that required you to construct proofs, justify convergence or work carefully from definitions. Record the syllabus, text, assessed topics and grade. Do not label a course proof-based merely because it contained formulas.
2. Statistical and computational work: Record modeling, inference, simulation and programming experience separately. Explain the decisions you made, rather than listing software packages. This evidence matters without becoming proof of an analysis course.
3. Unresolved equivalence: Match each target requirement to a completed course, an in-progress course or an actual gap. Where titles differ, ask the program how to document equivalence, following its inquiry instructions.

Berkeley specifically asks for a descriptive list of upper-level mathematics and statistics courses, including texts and subject matter. An illustrative applied-MS applicant

Imagine an applicant with strong regression grades, a substantial Python project and an applied master's thesis. Their mathematical coursework contains calculus and matrix methods, but no assessed proofs.

For UC Davis, the applicant cannot reasonably mark the analysis requirement “met” solely because the thesis used advanced models. They should establish whether an existing course is equivalent or whether the department would consider first-year completion in their case. A missing course deserves clarification, not an assumption of automatic ineligibility.

For Berkeley, they can describe computational strengths and any other substantial mathematical preparation. They still need to present what that preparation actually is. The flexible wording offers room for evaluation; it does not establish that software experience replaces all theoretical grounding.

Now suppose the same applicant completed a rigorous analysis course under a different title. The immediate task changes from buying more education to documenting the existing course accurately.

Applicants who already hold a graduate degree can check a completed master’s GPA as an admission alternative without presenting it as an erased undergraduate record.
