Is It Too Late to Apply to PT School in December?

No. PTCAS accepts applications until June 1, 2027 at 11:59 PM ET, and of the DPT programs we checked, seven list final deadlines between January 15 and June 1, 2027. Three others we checked closed on October 1 or November 1, 2026, and most of the open ones review on a rolling basis or offer seats as they go. December is late, not closed.

So the real question is not "is PTCAS open?" It is "which programs on my list still have a deadline I can meet, and a seat left?" PTCAS will not answer the second part for you. Its own help center says programs "may not notify PTCAS that their class is full."

Every PTCAS, Liaison and program page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026, for 2027 entry.

The cycle close is only the last day the system takes an application. Every one of these pages except VMCAS adds: "the individual program's deadline may differ from the application's cycle dates." For vet school in December, the realistic path is next cycle; see the VMCAS reapplicant essay guide for what to do with the year.

How PT program deadlines work

APTA's PTCAS preparation page sets the rule for program deadlines: "The first allowed PTCAS deadline is mid-August, and the deadlines must fall on the 1st or 15th, or the next following date if those dates fall on the weekend or a national holiday."

That rule explains dates that look odd. Tufts Boston's final deadline is February 16, 2027 because February 15, 2027 is a Monday and Presidents' Day. Mary Hardin-Baylor's is May 17, 2027 because May 15 is a Saturday (our arithmetic, checking the calendar against APTA's rule).

To see a program's deadline inside PTCAS, the cycle dates page says to "click Add Program and review the information under Deadline." You can submit "up until 11:59 PM ET on the deadline date."

Two more rules matter in December:

  • Seats can run out before the deadline. PTCAS's refund and withdrawal page says "programs review applications and fill seats throughout the application cycle and may not notify PTCAS that their class is full. We recommend contacting your programs before applying to confirm available seats."
  • Fees do not come back. The same page says "no refunds can be issued for any reason (this includes missed deadlines and programs no longer accepting applicants)."

For pharmacy, PharmCAS's participating programs page says "Deadlines are determined by each participating program, not PharmCAS," and "Priority deadlines are non-binding." You can apply after a priority deadline "as long as the program's final deadline has not passed."

DPT programs still taking applications, checked November 7, 2026

We checked these programs' own admissions pages on November 7, 2026. This is not a complete list. It shows the range of late deadlines that exist, so you know what to look for in the PTCAS directory.

ProgramFinal deadline (2027 entry)What the page says about timing
Sam Houston State UniversityJanuary 15, 2027"Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as they are verified." A new program: offers to the charter class are "contingent on the program receiving Candidate for Accreditation status from CAPTE," expected May 2027
Tufts DPT BostonFebruary 16, 2027, 11:59 PM ETSummer 2027 cohort; priority deadline November 16, 2026 has passed; applications reviewed "in the order of receipt on a rolling basis"
Campbell UniversityMarch 1, 2027After the October 1, 2026 priority deadline, "admissions decisions will be made as space permits"
Tufts DPT SeattleMarch 15, 2027, 11:59 PM ETFall 2027 cohort; priority deadline November 16, 2026 has passed; same rolling review; materials "must be verified by" the deadline, and Tufts recommends submitting "three to four weeks in advance"
Tufts DPT PhoenixApril 1, 2027, 11:59 PM ETSummer 2027 cohort; priority deadline November 16, 2026 has passed; same rolling review
University of Mary Hardin-BaylorMay 17, 2027"Seats in the Fall 2027 class may be offered after each interview date"
PCOM GeorgiaJune 1, 2027 (application and verification)Priority went to applications completed by December 1, 2026

For contrast, three programs we checked the same day were already closed: UAB (cycle ended November 1, 2026), UNT Health (PTCAS verification deadline October 1, 2026) and Sacramento State (PTCAS deadline October 1, 2026).

Our arithmetic on this table: of the seven open programs, five had a priority date on or before December 1, 2026, and six describe rolling review or seats offered as they go (Sam Houston State, all three Tufts campuses, Campbell and Mary Hardin-Baylor). A December application is real, but it is competing for what is left.

Should you apply in December or wait a cycle?

Our view: apply in December only to programs where all three are true: the final deadline leaves you at least three to four weeks for verification, the program confirms it still has seats, and you can submit an essay written to the current prompt, not a rushed one. Otherwise, spend the time on a stronger application that opens on June 15, 2027.

The basis: PTCAS fees are not refunded "for any reason," programs fill seats without telling PTCAS, and the essay "cannot be edited or changed" after you submit. A late application with a weak essay costs money and leaves a record: programs "may be able to see that you are a re-applicant" next year.

The countercase: if your GPA, prerequisites and hours already meet a late program's minimums and you have a finished essay, a December application to two or three confirmed-open programs is a reasonable bet. The same logic holds for OT, pharmacy and optometry, whose cycles close in May to July 2027.

A December plan

  1. Today: list every program you would attend. Open each one's admissions page and write down its final deadline, any verification-by date and any separate school application.
  2. Email the open ones: ask if seats remain for the 2027 class. PTCAS itself recommends this.
  3. Request transcripts now. Verification starts only when materials arrive.
  4. Request references now. Give each recommender a date two weeks before your earliest deadline.
  5. Write the essay to the current prompt. The 2026–2027 PTCAS prompt asks how you see yourself "having an impact on the profession upon entering the field," within 4,500 characters. The PTCAS essay guide walks through it.
  6. Submit three to four weeks before the earliest deadline. That matches Tufts' stated lead time and leaves room for the December holidays.
  7. Watch Academic Update. PTCAS's window runs December 15, 2026 to February 15, 2027; if your fall grades help, add them once. The guide to updating PTCAS after submitting has the steps.

Questions about applying late

Is it too late to apply to PT school in December 2026?

Not for PTCAS as a system, which closes June 1, 2027. It is too late for programs whose final deadlines have passed, such as the three October and November deadlines above. Check each program.

Do PT schools have rolling admissions?

Some say so on their own pages. Sam Houston State reviews applications "on a rolling basis as they are verified," and Mary Hardin-Baylor may offer seats "after each interview date." PTCAS says programs "fill seats throughout the application cycle."

What PTCAS deadlines are left for 2026–2027?

Program deadlines fall on the 1st or 15th of a month, or the next date if that day is a weekend or national holiday. Use Add Program inside PTCAS, or each program's site, to see them.

Is it too late for OT, pharmacy or SLP programs?

The systems are open: OTCAS to July 7, 2027, PharmCAS to June 30, 2027, CSDCAS to July 1, 2027. Program deadlines are earlier. PharmCAS priority deadlines are non-binding.
