What Reviewers Look For in the PhD SOP — Life Sciences (Rotation Programs)

This rubric evaluates whether your statement explains your research clearly: the question, methods, your own contribution, what the work produced, and what the results meant. It also looks at whether you make a specific, flexible case for the research areas or labs you would explore through rotations and connect the PhD to a clear career direction.

Mistakes We Flag

Starting with childhood interest instead of research
An early interest story can delay the science. Open with the research you have done or the problem you want to study, then keep background brief if you include it.
Listing methods without explaining their purpose
Methods, instruments, software, and computational pipelines should show what they helped you measure, build, test, or rule out. Unexplained technical lists are hard for readers outside your specialty to follow.
Leaving your role unclear
Readers need to understand what you did within a team or supervised project. A plainly stated supporting contribution is useful; you do not need to claim leadership.
Treating publications as the only meaningful outcome
A poster, dataset, protocol, figure set, report, thesis chapter, or a result that did not resolve the question can all show what your work produced. Do not apologize for not having a publication.
Making fit depend on one lab or one fixed thesis plan
For rotation-based programs, show why you would explore more than one lab, area, track, or facility, with a distinct reason for each. Keep your interests open enough for exploration before choosing a thesis lab.

Supports the rule that naming a faculty member is never required in this review: the program states "No, contacting faculty members in advance is not expected." It is also the source for publications never being required ("No, publications are not a requirement for admission to our program.") and for reading the statement of purpose as the science document, since the program says it "centers on your research experience and scientific interests, while the personal statement highlights the personal motivations and experiences that shape your decision to pursue research and a PhD."

Harvard Medical School, Biological and Biomedical Sciences PhD — Apply

Supports the same rule from the application page itself: "Since we ask students to indicate one of the general areas represented in our admissions committee, we don't ask students to list specific faculty of interest in the application." The page also sets a 1,000-word limit and asks that the personal statement "complement rather than duplicate the content provided in the Statement of Purpose."

MIT Biological Engineering Communication Lab — Graduate school personal statement

Supports reading fit at the grain the program's structure allows: "programs where students rotate in several labs typically expect you to list 2-3 faculty, while programs where you are directly admitted to a lab may expect details on potential projects." It also asks writers to give "high-level technical motivation and details of your research contribution", to "avoid jargon and acronyms specific to your sub-field", and to choose one career path and show the route to it. The guidance itself is dated last updated nov 2025.

Cornell University Graduate School — Statements of purpose

Supports treating faculty naming as optional rather than forbidden, since graduate schools differ: this one tells applicants that "Research degree applicants should identify specific faculty members whose research interests align with your own interests", and adds "If there are specific faculty you are interested in working with, check the program's ASOP instructions and determine how best to mention this in your essay." It also describes research writing as "project title or focus, research mentor, your specific role, what you learned and the outcome."

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill — Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program, Apply

Supports reading a fit case across more than one laboratory: the program asks applicants to "Highlight specific BBSP faculty you might be interested in rotating with and explain why they align with your research interests." Its research prompt also asks applicants to explain "your role in the project(s)" and to "Summarize objectives, challenges, outcomes, and next steps."

Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine — Driskill Graduate Program, Admissions and Application

Supports the rule that naming more than one research direction is never a weakness: the program tells applicants they "should not propose a specific research question you wish to work on for your thesis but may identify a field(s) of research that interests you." It asks for a 1,000-word academic statement in two parts of about 250 and 750 words, plus a separate 500-word personal statement.

Stanford University Biosciences — How to apply

Supports the rule that faculty names often belong outside the essay: this program collects "a rank-ordered list of eight to twelve Biosciences faculty of interest to you" and states "You will not need to secure a research supervisor prior to applying." It also sets a length of two pages, single-spaced, in 12-point type.

Yale School of Medicine — Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Application requirements

Supports treating faculty naming as optional ("You may mention specific BBS faculty whose research interests you") and supports asking what the writer started themselves, since the prompt asks applicants to "include how you have taken initiative on a research project, academic endeavor, or employment responsibility." Its limit is 500 to 1,000 words, the shortest in the set.

University of California San Diego — Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, How to apply

Supports the length range this review calibrates to: "The statement has a 1500 word limit and should be well organized, concise, and completely free of grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors."

Washington State University School of Biological Sciences — Applying to graduate school

Supports the boundary this review draws around programs that admit you to one laboratory: "In SBS, and many other biology programs, you will be applying to work in a specific lab where the PI ... will be your primary advisor." It also asks writers to place previous research in context - "what was the question being investigated, what was discovered, what did it mean" - and to "Describe your long-term professional goals and what you would want to do with your degree."

Supports asking what the writer's own part in the work was: the program asks applicants to "describe your research project(s) and specific contributions to the work in the most comprehensive way possible, including the question, the approach, the results, and the interpretation", and to relate a question "that most intrigues you, highlighting potential Washington University DBBS faculty mentors." Its published policy on writing tools reads: "Your application essays and other written materials should be a reflection of your writing aptitude and your decisions on how to think about and present information, and therefore you should not use AI tools like ChatGPT to author your essays."

Cornell University Graduate School — Use of generative AI in graduate admissions applications

Supports the rule that this review never suggests translating a statement or making its English sound more native. The published policy permits "Using grammar- and spelling-correction tools to review your own writing" and "Using translation tools to check the meaning of individual words or short phrases", and prohibits "Using AI to translate your written works from another language into English, in whole or in substantial part" and "Copying, pasting, or lightly editing AI-generated text and presenting it as your own writing." The policy itself is dated updated 9/1/26.

Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences — Application requirements

Supports the same length range from a second program: "Please keep your statement to 1500 words." Its prompt asks writers to outline their interest in research science and why this school is right for them, and says they may discuss faculty they would want to work with.

Supports the short end of the length range: "Applicants must submit a one-page personal statement that describes their personal motivation for pursuing a career in science and their research experience."

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to name faculty members?

No. Naming an individual faculty member is not required, and naming none is not a problem. You can discuss research areas, training tracks, centers, institutes, or core facilities instead; follow the program's own instructions if it asks for faculty names.

Can I discuss more than one research direction?

Yes. More than one direction is expected in rotation-based programs. You do not need to commit to one thesis question before rotations.

Do I need publications or bench research experience?

No. Publications are not required, and computational methods count on the same terms as laboratory methods. Describe what you actually did and what the work produced.

How long should my statement be?

Follow the program's published instructions when they are provided. This review is calibrated to statements of about 700 to 1,500 words, but that is not a required length, and a complete statement written for a shorter program limit should not be treated as too short.
