- Listing lab experiences without explaining your contribution
- Readers need to understand what you personally did and learned. A lab name, publication list, or “we conducted research” does not identify your role.
- Naming software or methods without explaining their purpose
- Listing tools such as R, Python, or SPSS does not show how your approach addressed the question. Explain what the measure, comparison, model, or analysis was meant to distinguish.
- Making claims that go beyond the evidence
- For example, an association alone does not establish causation, and a convenience sample does not automatically represent everyone. Keep conclusions aligned with the design, data, or model described.
- Using generic program praise instead of a working connection
- Broad praise for faculty or research does not show why the program fits your next research steps. Explain what a faculty member, training approach, research group, method, or intellectual community would enable you to do.
