US Aerospace MS: Which Jobs Can Indians Do?

A US aerospace master's does not make every aerospace job accessible to an Indian graduate. Check the actual role's work authorization, export-access conditions, security clearance and sponsorship policy. Neither “all jobs are closed” nor “my US degree solves it” is a defensible plan.

Four different conditions can apply

The Bureau of Industry and Security explains that releasing controlled technology or source code to a foreign person inside the United States can constitute a deemed export. A transfer does not have to cross a border to raise an export-control question.

But export controls are not a blanket citizenship requirement. The Justice Department's employer guidance says ITAR and EAR do not themselves impose hiring requirements. It also explains that “U.S. persons” include permanent residents, refugees and asylees, as well as citizens and nationals. Employers may need government authorization to share controlled items with other workers. That assessment is separate from checking permission to work.

Two official postings checked on September 12, 2026 illustrate why you must read beyond the degree requirement:

These are examples of published requirements, not estimates of either company's willingness to hire you. They also have technical and experience requirements. A role appearing in this table is not necessarily an entry-level option or still open when you read it.

Test the career plan against actual roles

Before committing to a master's, collect a small sample of current positions in the work you actually want: for example, aerodynamic simulation, aircraft systems or propulsion testing. Record the country and specific job identifier, rather than treating an employer's name as an eligibility category.

For each role, answer four questions:

1. Work permission: what authorization would you have, and does it cover this employment?
2. Export access: what condition is stated, and is an authorization route mentioned? Ask the employer to clarify its process where necessary.
3. Clearance: does the posting separately require citizenship or a particular clearance?
4. Sponsorship: what does the employer say about employment-visa sponsorship, including your future needs?

Mark an unclear condition as unresolved. An omitted restriction does not prove that the job is available to every applicant. Likewise, a listed export authorization alternative does not tell you whether the employer will pursue it for your case.

Illustrative example: an Indian mechanical engineer selects a master's because its propulsion courses match their interests. Their initial target list consists entirely of roles explicitly requiring citizenship for clearance. The next step is to investigate other actual roles and countries, or reconsider the plan. Replacing “propulsion” with “mechanical engineering” in the degree name would not change those postings' requirements.

This check should shape which programs you investigate and what you ask career services. It cannot produce a reliable personal hiring probability.
