Agent Hid My Backlogs: Fix the Application Now
Agent hid your backlogs, a gap or a visa refusal? Your marksheets and records can still show it. How to correct the application before a decision.
Agent Hid My Backlogs: Fix the Application Now
If an agent left your backlogs, a gap or a visa refusal out of an application, correct it yourself, in writing, before the decision. The application is in your name. Colorado State does not accept consolidated mark sheets "unless all attempts, retakes, and failures are included", and Adelaide University can refuse or withdraw an offer if an applicant "or their representative" gave "incorrect information".
This page is about the facts in the application, not who wrote the statement. If your problem is authorship, start with agent wrote my statement of purpose. Here you get the published rules that make an omission visible, a constructed correction email, and when the SOP needs one sentence changed. If it does, the MS statement of purpose rubric can read the revised draft.
Every university page quoted below was checked on October 31, 2026. Each rule belongs to the university that wrote it; read the terms of every program you applied to.
Four places an omission hides
Check each of these against your own records before you write to anyone:
- Marksheets. A consolidated marksheet or a "final" transcript uploaded instead of semester marksheets that show every attempt.
- Form answers. "No" to a question about previous visa refusals, or about previous study, when the honest answer is yes.
- Grade fields. A CGPA converted to another scale, or rounded, where the form asked for the grade as printed.
- The CV. Dates stretched to cover a gap, or a degree you started and left removed.
Log in to every portal yourself and download what was submitted. You cannot correct what you have not seen.
Who will see it
The marksheet rules are quoted in full in how to mention backlogs in your SOP. In short: Colorado State requires semester or annual marksheets from Indian applicants and accepts a consolidated sheet only if it shows every attempt, and Illinois's Siebel School requires scanned transcripts with all grade records and can rescind an offer over discrepancies. The rule that reaches the representative is Adelaide University's. Its genuine student assessment procedure (effective December 19, 2025) says:
"We may refuse admission, withdraw an offer of admission, or cancel a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) at any time if:" … "we believe the prospective international student, or their representative, has provided fraudulent or incorrect information". "Our assessment remains valid for 24 months. During this period, if one or more of the above refusal criteria apply to a prospective international student, they will be refused admission to all programs."
For a visa refusal left off a form, the rules are quoted in previous visa refusal on a university application: Adelaide's agent guidance flags a "no" answer sitting beside an uploaded refusal letter, and Bath Spa's guide to the UK Student visa form warns that leaving a refusal off the form is likely to lead to refusal.
Three things follow. The documents these universities ask for are designed to show every attempt, so a backlog left out of a form is still in the marksheets. Adelaide's rule names the representative as well as the student, so "the agent filled it in" is covered by the same refusal ground. And Adelaide's 24-month rule reaches every program, not only the one you applied to.
Our view: correct the record now, by email to the admissions office, in plain facts. Do not wait to see whether anyone notices, and do not try to fix it by rewriting the SOP. The rules above put the risk on discrepancies between what you declared and what the documents show, and a correction removes the discrepancy.
The countercase: some portals let you edit an answer or replace a document before a deadline. Where the portal allows that, use it, then send the short note so the office knows why the document changed. And if the program has already decided, the office may treat the correction differently; ask it what its terms allow rather than assuming.
The correction email
Send it from your own email address, to the admissions address on the program's page, with your application ID in the subject line.
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. Context (invented): an MS applicant whose agent uploaded a consolidated marksheet and entered no backlogs.
Subject: Correction to application 2027-123456 (invented), Ananya Rao
Dear Admissions Office,
I am writing about my application to the MS in Electrical Engineering, ID 2027-123456. The academic record uploaded with it was a consolidated marksheet that does not show two backlogs I cleared in semesters 3 and 4. The correct record is two backlogs, in Network Theory and Signals and Systems, both cleared at the next attempt. I have attached all eight semester marksheets, which show every attempt, and my degree certificate. Please replace the earlier document with these and let me know if you need anything else from me.

Why it works: five sentences after the greeting, each doing one job: the application, what was wrong, the correct fact, the attached evidence, the request. There is no paragraph about the agent. The office needs the right record, not the history of how the wrong one got there. If you are asked, answer that question then, briefly and truthfully.
For a "no" on a refusal question, the same shape works: the question, the correct answer, the refusal letter attached. A refusal also changes what you may need to write elsewhere; see previous visa refusal on a university application.
Does the SOP need to change
Only if it now contradicts the corrected record. An SOP that says "a consistent academic record" beside marksheets with two backlogs does contradict it. Then change that one sentence, for programs that have not yet decided, through whatever route the portal allows. One line is enough:
I cleared two backlogs, in semesters 3 and 4, and my final four semesters averaged 7.9 out of 10.
That line is constructed too, for the same invented applicant. How much to say about backlogs is covered in how to mention backlogs in your SOP. If the SOP does not mention grades, leave it alone; the correction email does the work.
Working with the agent from here
Adelaide's tips for its agency partners ask agents to "verify all supporting documents" and "ensure application questions are answered correctly". Those are the university's expectations of the agent, but the declarations are still made in your name. From here:
- Keep the portal passwords and the contact email in your own hands.
- Ask the agent for copies of everything submitted, for every program.
- Read every form answer before anything else is submitted.
How agents are paid, and where their interests and yours can differ, is set out in how study abroad consultants and agents make money. For the visa side of agent-written documents, see education agents and visa statement quality.
Questions about correcting an application
I already have an offer. Should I still correct it?
Yes. Adelaide's procedure lets it "withdraw an offer of admission" at any time on that ground, and Illinois reserves the right to rescind an offer over transcript discrepancies. Neither describes a cut-off after which the record stops mattering.
The deadline has passed. Can I still send a correction?
A correction to submitted information is not a new application. Write to the admissions office anyway and ask how it wants the corrected document sent. The office's answer is the rule for that program.
Will correcting it hurt my application?
No page quoted here promises how a correction is judged. What they do describe are the consequences of an uncorrected discrepancy: rescinded offers at Illinois, refusal across all programs for 24 months at Adelaide, and, on the UK visa form, a likely refusal if a refusal is not listed.
Do I need to say the agent made the mistake?
Not in the correction email. If the office asks how it happened, answer briefly and truthfully. If the same agent wrote your statement, see what readers notice in a consultant-written SOP.

It reads for your academic goals, program fit, evidence of preparation and how specific the statement is to the program, so a revised line about grades is read in context.
