Applying to US Colleges Without a Counselor

You can apply to US colleges without a college counselor. In the Common App, the "counselor" is the school official who sends your School Report and transcript. Princeton names "a principal, vice principal or dean." NYU names "a teacher, principal, or other school official." What you can't do is give that role to a parent, a friend or an agent.

Our view: colleges have already planned for a school without a counselor. The real failure is a student who waits months for a counselor who doesn't exist, then asks the principal two weeks before the deadline. Name your school official at least a month before your first deadline, and build your own feedback loop for the essay, because nobody at school will run one for you. When the essay is drafted, a Common App essay review is one reader you can use at any hour.

Every Common App and college page quoted below was checked on October 30, 2026. Requirements change by cycle, so recheck each college's international page before you invite anyone.

Who colleges say can stand in for a counselor

SourceWhat it says
Princeton, International Students"If your school does not have a counselor for students applying to university, please ask a school official — such as a principal, vice principal or dean — to complete your School Report"
NYU, Abu Dhabi Common App guide (published December 16, 2025)"If you don't have an official guidance or college counselor, then a teacher, principal, or other school official can fill in those parts of the Common Application, such as the School Report."
NYU Abu Dhabi, Apply for Admission"School Contact: Provide the contact details of the counselor or school representative who will complete your Common Application School Report and submit your official transcript."
Common App, counselor deck for international student supporters (February 2026)Four recommender types: "Counselor", "Teacher", "Other recommender", "Advisor". "Advisors do not submit forms."

The pattern is clear. The person must be at your school and able to speak for it. A title like "principal" or "dean" is enough. A parent can only be an advisor, and advisors send nothing.

The countercase: a very senior official is not always the best choice. If your principal answers email once a month, a vice principal or a senior teacher who answers within a day may serve you better, as long as the school agrees that person can send records in its name. Indian students have a fuller version of this choice, with a school profile outline and a handover note, in no college counselor at your Indian school.

Four Common App facts that change how you manage your principal

Common App's February 2026 deck has four lines that matter more to you than to a student with a full-time counselor:

  1. "Each college determines which forms they require." One college may want a counselor recommendation and a Midyear Report. Another may want neither. Your official can't guess, so you must tell them.
  2. "Counselors must submit the School report before they can submit the Mid-year report, Optional report, or Final report." The School Report comes first, always.
  3. "Transcripts, recommendations, and school forms are only sent to colleges when students submit their Common App." Your official can finish early, but nothing reaches a college until you submit. NYU Abu Dhabi says the same: officials "do not need to wait for you to submit your application," but colleges can't see the forms until you do.
  4. "The Common App recommendation system does not send reminders about these forms." That line is about Midyear Reports. For a school with no counselor, assume you are the reminder system for everything.

If your school year runs January to December, the deck answers that too: "Counselors should submit Mid-year reports as soon as first semester/trimester grades are available."

Our recommendation: keep a one-line-per-college tracker and give your official a copy. Columns: college, deadline, forms that college requires, sent yes or no. Update it each time you add a college.

If your school official doesn't write in English

This is the gap a principal at a non-English-medium school worries about most. Three colleges answer it differently:

CollegeWhat it says about translation
PrincetonThe person "may complete the forms in another language. However, you will need to have the forms officially translated before they are submitted … Translations can be provided by an official in your school, or a third party, but paid translations are not required."
Caltech"we require the original document and an English translation. Consider asking an English teacher or school official to translate the document." Also: "We will not review your application if any part is not translated in English."
Penn"please ensure that we receive a certified translations of any of your application materials which are not originally printed in English."

NYU Abu Dhabi adds that "a school official or a translation agency accredited in your country can issue the translation."

Our view: ask your school to produce the translation itself, signed by a named staff member. That satisfies Princeton, Caltech and NYU Abu Dhabi as written. Penn says "certified" and its page doesn't define the word, so email Penn before you pay anyone. Unknown: none of these pages say whether you may translate your own school documents. Don't. Caltech and Princeton both point to a school official or a third party, not to you. Letters raise the same question; see recommendation letter translation for US colleges.

Fee waivers when nobody at school knows the form

Common App's deck answers the international question with "It depends!" and says "it is not guaranteed" that a college will accept a waiver request from an international student. For the Common App waiver itself, someone at school has to act. Princeton says, "Your school counselor must approve your fee waiver request online," and lists a second route: select the Princeton-specific waiver, for which "All low-income students are eligible." NYU Abu Dhabi says students who can't pay "can request a fee waiver." Our Common App fee waiver guide covers the criteria and the 2026–27 college list.

Free help: what we could and could not verify

We tried to check EducationUSA's website (educationusa.state.gov) on October 30, 2026. It returned HTTP 503, directly and through a reader service, so we don't describe its advising or funding services here. Check its site yourself before relying on anyone's summary of it.

One thing we could verify: the Common App asks you to "List any community programs or organizations that have provided you with free assistance in your application process." If an advising centre, NGO or school-partnership programme helped you, list it there. It tells the reader how you got your information. NYU Abu Dhabi also runs its own self-reported transcript system, and says it is meant for "students who don't have easy access to college counseling." See what a self-reported transcript is.

Getting essay feedback with no counselor

A counselor usually gives you a first reader. Without one, build the loop yourself. Each reader below has one job. Asking any of them to fix everything is how essays lose the writer's voice.

Common App's fraud policy is the line all of this stays behind. It lists, as fraud, "Submitting plagiarized essays or other written or oral material, or intentionally misrepresenting as one's own original work: (1) another person's thoughts, language, ideas, expressions, or experiences or (2) the substantive content or output of an artificial intelligence platform, technology, or algorithm" (Common App, Fraud Policy, last updated August 2023). The same policy also lists "using fictitious or materially inaccurate applicant, counselor, or recommender contact information" and "Circumventing the use of official counselor communication channels." Our page on what the Common App fraud policy says about AI reads the policy clause by clause.

If your principal asks you to write your own counselor letter, read international students and recommendation letters first. Give them facts, never a finished letter. Wider options for free essay help are collected in free college essay help for low-income students.

Constructed example: the email that recruits your school official

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. Names and dates are invented. 120 words.

Dear Mr. Okafor,

I am applying to universities in the United States through an online system called the Common App. US universities ask each applicant's school to confirm their records. Our school has no college counselor, so I would like to ask whether you would act as my school official.

This means three things: completing one online form about our school, attaching my transcript, and later sending my final-term grades. Princeton's admissions page says a principal can do this.

My first deadline is January 1, 2027. If you agree, the Common App will send you an email invitation, and I will bring you a one-page list of what each university needs.

Thank you for considering it.

Adaeze Nwosu, SS3 Science

It names the system, the reason, the exact tasks and one outside source the principal can check. It doesn't ask for a letter in the same email. That is a second request, made once the official has agreed.

Questions about applying without a counselor

Can a teacher be my counselor on the Common App?

At NYU, yes: its guide says "a teacher, principal, or other school official" can complete the School Report. Princeton's list names a principal, vice principal or dean. Use someone the school authorizes to send records.

Can I send my own transcript?

Not as the official copy at Princeton, Caltech or NYU Abu Dhabi. Princeton says "An official transcript must be sent by a school counselor or school official." Caltech says "the transcript must be sent to us directly from your school." NYU Abu Dhabi accepts unofficial uploads "for review purposes," but wants official documents before enrollment.

Will colleges hold it against me that my school has no counselor?

None of the pages we checked says so. Princeton says it evaluates applicants "with their immediate context and opportunities in mind." An NYU Abu Dhabi assistant director of admissions, quoted in NYU's guide, says: "I will look at your school report and school profile to understand and contextualize your educational background and experience." A short Additional Information note can say your school has no counselor.

Where do my predicted grades come from if there is no counselor?

From the same school official. See predicted grades on the Common App. Your own half of the form is covered in the Common App, section by section, from a school outside the US.

If you are thinking of paying an education agent to fill the counselor gap, know that an agent cannot submit school documents.

To explain a lack of resources at your school in the right boxes, use the placement table there.

The official who agrees to help can follow the School Report field by field.

Homeschooled? Your parent or supervisor is your counselor; see the homeschool counselor letter guide.
