Apply to US Universities Without a Consultant
Yes, you can apply from India without a consultant. The free official source for each consultant task, India red flags, and who answers for an AI essay.
Apply to US Universities Without a Consultant
Yes. Using the Common App platform is free, colleges deal with you directly, and every rule a consultant works from is published by the colleges themselves. Illinois goes further: "Illinois does not use private recruiting agents," and "Students interested in Illinois should work directly with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions."
Our view: the parts of a US application a consultant cannot do for you are the parts that decide it. You write the essays. Your school sends the documents. You own the account. Everything else, from the college list to the deadlines, is published free. And if a consultant's essay turns out to be AI-written, the application that breaks the rules is yours, not theirs. When your own draft is ready, the free Common App narrative craft rubric reads it.
Every college, Common App and EducationUSA page quoted below was checked on October 30, 2026. This page gives no consultant fees, because we found no official source for them.
What a consultant does, and the free source for each job
The Common App's first-year guide says: "Although some colleges have application fees, using the Common App platform is free" (Common App, First-year application guide). Here is where each consultant job is already done for you:
| Consultant job | Free source | What that source says or does |
|---|---|---|
| Building a college list | EducationUSA India, 5 steps to US study | "there are no official rankings for U.S. universities." It advises "not to be guided solely by external influences such as rankings" |
| Explaining the process | EducationUSA | Calls itself "a U.S. Department of State program and the official source of information on U.S. higher education" |
| Essay prompts | Common App, 2026–2027 essay prompts | All seven prompts, verbatim |
| Recommendations | Common App, Understanding the recommendation process | Who can recommend you, how to ask, "at least three weeks in advance of a deadline" |
| School documents | Your school | Princeton: "An official transcript must be sent by a school counselor or school official" |
| English tests | Each college's international page | Rules differ: Illinois's approved-country list, for example, does not include India |
| Financial aid | Each college's aid page | Rules differ by college. Read the aid page itself |
EducationUSA India's About page lists its advising centers with email contacts in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata, and its other pages list events and sessions on US study. The pages we read do not describe what one-to-one help each center gives, so email the nearest one and ask. Use EducationUSA for the process, and the colleges for the rules.

Red flags in an Indian consultant's offer
Walk away from any offer that includes one of these:
- An "SOP" for a US bachelor's application. US first-year applications ask for a personal essay and college-specific questions, not an SOP. A consultant who sells one is working from the wrong template. See why there is no SOP for undergraduate in the USA.
- "We will send your school documents." Northeastern: "All high school transcripts must be sent directly to Northeastern by your high school by the application deadline. Any transcripts sent by you, your family or an independent educational consultant will not be accepted" (Northeastern, International applicants). The Common App's fraud policy includes "Circumventing the use of official counselor communication channels" (Common App, Fraud Policy, last updated August 2023).
- "Give us your Common App login." Keep the account in your name with your own password. Our page on who should own the Common App account covers why.
- "We will polish your essay into a stronger voice." That means their sentences in your essay. Harvard says "A student's essay should reflect their own content, writing style, and English proficiency."
- A promised admit. Colleges make admission decisions. Nobody else can promise one.
- A list of "partner universities" only. A list built only from a consultant's partners may reflect who pays the consultant, not where you fit. Ask question 5 below. Our report on how US universities pay Indian agents explains the commission system.
The vetting questions to ask before paying are in are college admissions consultants worth it?. What an agent may and may not do under each rule is in using an agent for US college applications.
If your consultant uses ChatGPT
You sign the application. The consultant does not. That is the whole problem.
The Common App's fraud policy covers "intentionally misrepresenting as one's own original work: (1) another person's thoughts, language, ideas, expressions, or experiences or (2) the substantive content or output of an artificial intelligence platform, technology, or algorithm."
Brown adds its own rule (Brown, Integrity in the application process):
"Brown affirms this definition and reiterates our own independent policy that the use of artificial intelligence by an applicant is not permitted under any circumstances in conjunction with application content. While an applicant may use artificial intelligence to assist with spelling and grammar review, in the same way as any other platform that supports basic proofreading, the content of all essays, short-answer questions and any other material submitted by an applicant must be the work of that individual."
Harvard states the consequence (Harvard College, What help can students receive in writing their essays?):
"If we discover a misrepresentation during the admissions process, you will be denied admission. If you have already been admitted, your offer will typically be withdrawn. If you have already registered, your admission will normally be revoked, and we will require you to leave the College."
Rules differ by college. If a college publishes no AI rule, the certification inside the application is what you sign, so read it there. Whether colleges can tell is a separate question, covered in agent wrote my college essay: will colleges know?.
What to ask before paying anyone
If you still want help with planning, get these answers in writing before you pay:
- Who drafts the essays? The only right answer is "you do".
- Who sends school documents? "Your school does."
- Who holds the Common App login? "You do."
- Do you use AI on student essays, and how?
- Which colleges pay you, and how much?
- What exactly is included, and what does each part cost?
Our view: a consultant who answers all six cleanly may be worth paying for planning. A consultant who hesitates on question 1 is not worth paying for anything.
A DIY plan in eight steps
- Read the five steps on EducationUSA India. One evening.
- Pick your colleges from their own pages, not from rankings. Note each one's deadlines, English test rule and aid rule.
- Ask your principal to act as your counselor. If your school has none, see no college counselor at your Indian school?.
- Ask two Class XI or XII teachers for recommendations, with three weeks' notice at least.
- Create your Common App account in your own name, with your own email.
- Draft your personal essay from one of the seven prompts. Read Indian college essay clichés before your second draft.
- Draft each college's own questions, one at a time, from the college's page.
- Get feedback from a teacher who knows your writing, then revise it yourself.
Already have a consultant-written essay?
Do not submit it. Take it back:
- Close the file. Write down, from memory, the one moment the essay is about.
- Rewrite from that note in your own words, in one sitting, without looking at the old draft.
- Read both aloud. Any line that sounds like the old draft and not like you, cut.
- Check your other writing. Your teacher letters, any graded paper and any interview will sound like you. The essay should too. The college essay voice test has five signs to check.
Questions about applying without a consultant
Can I apply to US universities without a consultant?
Yes. The Common App says "using the Common App platform is free," and colleges such as Illinois tell students to "work directly with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions."
Are US college admission consultants in India worth it?
For planning help, sometimes. For essays, school documents or a promised admit, no. Ask the six questions above first.
Does my consultant using ChatGPT get me in trouble?
It can. The Common App treats "the substantive content or output of an artificial intelligence platform" presented as your own work as fraud, and you are the one who signs.
What does an admissions consultant in India charge?
We found no official or published source for consultant fees, so we do not give a range. Get the price in writing, item by item. For financial aid forms, see what to enter on the CSS Profile in rupees.
