Indian BArch: US MS or MArch for Licensure?

An Indian BArch, US architecture MS and professional MArch can lead to different next steps. Check your existing licence and target jurisdiction first.

Indian BArch: US MS or MArch for Licensure?

Choose a US architecture master's by the education requirement you actually need to meet. An Indian BArch does not make every US MS or MArch equivalent for licensing. Your existing professional licence and intended US jurisdiction can change the route.

The degree initials do not settle accreditation

NAAB's student guidance identifies professional architecture programs it accredits. Check the exact program, rather than assuming every architecture master's at an accredited school has the same status.

Two university examples show why:

ProgramPublished distinctionShortlisting implication
MIT MArch and SMArchSThe catalog identifies MArch as MIT Architecture's one NAAB-accredited degree program; SMArchS is advanced study based on architectural research and inquiryA research master's and the accredited professional program serve different educational purposes
Yale MArch IIThis post-professional program explicitly states that it is not NAAB-accredited and does not satisfy the education requirement in jurisdictions following the cited NCARB requirementsEven “MArch” in the title does not establish that the program supplies the professional education credential you need

A research or post-professional degree can still be a sensible academic choice. The mistake is buying it to solve a licensing requirement it does not address.

Check your route before choosing another degree

NCARB's international-applicant guidance distinguishes applicants licensed abroad from applicants who hold an international architecture degree without a licence. Depending on eligibility and jurisdiction, the International Architect Path or an Education Evaluation Services for Architects assessment can address the education component. Experience and examination requirements remain; an NCARB Certificate itself does not authorize US practice.

Use this order:

  1. Identify the jurisdiction. Look up the licensing board where you intend to practise. There is no single national US architecture licence.
  2. Record your current status. Distinguish your BArch certificate from a current professional registration. Ask NCARB and the board which route applies to that combination.
  3. Identify the actual educational gap. An evaluation may identify deficiencies; a licensed-abroad route has its own eligibility requirements. Do not assume either result before assessment.
  4. Compare exact programs against that gap. Ask the university about your eligibility, advanced standing and approved curriculum separately from the board's licensing decision.
  5. Evaluate the academic reason to attend. Once the professional route is clear, compare the design research, studio work or technical preparation you want to develop.

GradPilot worked example: Two Indian BArch graduates want to study computational design. One holds a professional licence in India; the other has graduated but is not licensed. They should not automatically purchase the same additional degree as a licensing solution. They first establish their respective routes, then compare an advanced research program with professional education where needed. This example determines what to investigate, not either applicant's eligibility or outcome.

Make the statement match the degree's purpose

Explain why this particular graduate training advances your work. Avoid promising that an advanced research degree automatically licenses you. Our field-based SOP examples and graduate essay hub help distinguish preparation, goals and fit.

If you submit group studio work, check MArch portfolio attribution. For a compatible master's statement, use the general SOP rubric through free graduate statement review. The review addresses your writing, not portfolio quality or licensing eligibility.
