What the published biotechnology prompts actually ask
Two well-known professional biotechnology master's programs publish a prompt, and both point at background rather than research.
Johns Hopkins' advanced academic programs ask MS Biotechnology applicants for a one-page statement about the background or life experience that shaped their goals — quoted verbatim on the biotech and bioinformatics SOP examples hub — and list no separate research or objectives essay (admission requirements).
Georgetown is blunter about the job the document does: "The statement of purpose allows you to highlight areas of your background or interests that may not be clear in other areas of your application." Its optional second statement covers diversity, personal background and contribution (admissions).
Most programs publish nothing at all, and put a course list where the prompt would be. Northwestern requires "At least one course in each of the following areas: Organic chemistry or biochemistry, General or physical chemistry, Biology (e.g., cellular or molecular), Calculus" and states no prompt, word count or page limit for the statement itself (admissions).
The genre is not fixed by the field. It is fixed by the page you apply through, and a statement written for a research doctorate is off-brief in all three cases above.
Write the gap, then the destination
A background prompt is not an invitation to be sentimental. It is asking what your record does not already show. A working procedure:
- Read your application as the committee will. Transcript, CV, recommendations — list what they already prove, and do not re-prove it.
- Find the thing only you can say. Why this work, decided by something that happened, not by a childhood fascination.
- Name one destination. Process development, regulatory affairs, assay development, clinical data — a function, not "the industry."
- Show one capability the degree supplies that you are currently missing, and the evidence that you would use it.
