Bocconi MSc Motivation Letter: The Dossier

Bocconi publishes no word limit for the MSc motivation. Its admissions page names a "Dossier/Motivation" that "must be in English". The programme Director evaluates it next to a test score and your GPA. Round II closes 26 January 2027 at 3 p.m. Italian time.

Bocconi's own page says more than any sample letter. The motivation is one of three compulsory elements. An application missing any of the three is not evaluated. And the result "will depend on a ranking". So the round you pick and the test you bring decide more than one extra paragraph. If you are drafting now, the one-page European motivation letter rubric reads a letter for programme choice, preparation and plan.

Every Bocconi page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. They cover international applicants to the two-year Master of Science and MA programmes for the 2027/28 academic year. Round I (1 to 29 October 2026) has closed.

What Bocconi evaluates

The Bocconi international admissions page sets three gates:

"In the four selection rounds, international candidates are evaluated through a comprehensive process that considers all aspects of their profile, with a specific focus on three compulsory evaluation elements. Applications will not be evaluated if any of these three elements are missing"

The three elements, in Bocconi's words:

  1. "Results of the GMAT/GRE test or the online Bocconi test" (the PPA and GLOBE programmes need no test)
  2. "Grade point average of exams passed in the Undergraduate program"
  3. "Evaluation of the Dossier and Motivation"

On the third, the page says: "The Director of the Master of Science program will evaluate the various documents and information included in the dossier and verify the applicant's overall profile, experience, and knowledge." It then adds: "The Dossier/Motivation supporting the candidate's application must be in English."

The MSc application overview explains how the three combine: "The admission result will depend on a ranking that is calculated on the basis of these elements and considering the spots available during each selection round, as well as the programs chosen, the number of applications received, etc."

Keep three things apart:

What it covers
PublishedThree compulsory elements; the motivation in English; the Director evaluates the dossier; a ranking decides; "No particular scores are required" for GPA
Our recommendationOne page, about 450–600 words, built around the programmes you rank first and second
UnknownA word or page limit; the form fields; whether you write one motivation for all your programmes or one each; how much each element weighs in the ranking

The admissions page never uses the word "letter". The application itself, which needs an account, is where the format appears. We did not open it, so this page states no limit. Use whatever limit the form shows.

Rounds for 2027/28

From the same admissions page. "Each round closes at 3 p.m. (Italian time) on the date indicated."

RoundApplication periodResults and start of enrolment
I1 – 29 October 2026 (closed)17 December 2026
II30 October 2026 – 26 January 20274 March 2027
III27 January – 11 March 202713 April 2027
IV12 March – 29 April 202710 June 2027

The rules that shape your plan:

  • "Slots for the most sought-after programs and the majority of scholarships are more likely to be allocated in the earlier rounds."
  • "You cannot apply to two rounds at the same time. You must wait for the outcome of your current application before submitting another one."
  • "You may apply a maximum of two times for the same academic year".
  • For a second try, "at least one element of your profile must be updated or improved (e.g., a higher test score, revised program choices, updated academic records, etc.)."
  • "Candidates who have received an offer of admission are not eligible to reapply in the same academic year."

Now line those rules up against the dates (our arithmetic). Round II results arrive on 4 March 2027, and Round III closes on 11 March: 7 days to improve something and reapply. Round III results arrive on 13 April, and Round IV closes on 29 April: 16 days.

Our view: apply in Round II with your best test score in hand, not in Round III with a longer letter. Bocconi says the most sought-after slots and most scholarships are more likely to go in the earlier rounds. A Round II rejection also leaves only a week before Round III closes, which is too short to retake a test. The countercase: if your test score is weak and a retake falls after 26 January, wait. Apply once in Round III with the higher score. You have only two attempts, and the second must improve something, so do not spend the first on a profile you already plan to change.

One motivation, up to five programmes

"In the online application, candidates may indicate up to 5 programs within a single application submitted through the standard rounds." Four special International Management programmes "must be entered as separate choices". IM Global Experience and Finance Global Experience have their own two rounds, and the LSE and Sciences Po double degrees have their own selection.

The page does not say whether each choice gets its own motivation. Write for the case where one text has to cover them all.

Our recommendation: choose programmes that share one goal, rank them, and say in two sentences why each one gets you there. Five unrelated programmes tell the Director that you do not know what you want. That is a weak signal in a process run by programme Directors.

Constructed example: one paragraph for Finance and DSBA

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Rohan Iyer has a commerce degree and a six-month internship at a lender. He ranks Finance first and Data Science and Business Analytics (DSBA) second. Both appear in Bocconi's 2027-28 programme list.

The weak version (33 words):

I am applying to Finance, Data Science and Business Analytics, Marketing Management and International Management because Bocconi is a top university and all of these programs match my interests and my career goals.

The revised version (89 words):

My first choice is the MSc in Finance and my second is Data Science and Business Analytics. Both follow from one problem. During my internship at a mid-sized lender, I rebuilt the loan-loss spreadsheet in Python and found that 11 of its 40 sector assumptions had not been updated in four years. Finance is where I want to make those calls. DSBA is where I would learn to build the models that test them. Either programme leads to the same first job: credit risk analysis at a European bank.

Why it works: it ranks the choices. It gives one piece of evidence that serves both. And it states one goal that explains why both programmes are on the list. A Director of either programme can read it and see why it was chosen.

The optional video prompts

"You can also record a Video presentation (optional) in English as an additional element to your application. Please consider that the video presentation is not mandatory for the selection, but can be an additional opportunity for students coming from international Universities."

The standard prompts, verbatim:

  • "Self-presentation"
  • "Why do you consider yourself a person with a pronounced international attitude?"
  • "How do you evaluate your ability to go beyond your "comfort zone" and face complex situations?"

The video is not optional everywhere. For "IM CEMS MIM, IM Asia - China MIM, IM Asia - Bocconi-ESSEC, and IM Concentration – DD ESSEC Luxury Management", the page says these programmes "require the submission of a dedicated video presentation."

Our recommendation: if you record one, use a different story from the one in your written motivation. Keep every fact, date and title the same in both. The video prompts ask about your international attitude and leaving your comfort zone. Nothing on the admissions page asks the written motivation to cover those, so the video is the place for that story.

Bocconi's preference for recent graduates

"Preferential consideration for admission is given to applicants whose undergraduate studies are still underway or were completed less than two years prior to the application. Applicants with other profiles will be considered at a later stage."

The page does not explain what "at a later stage" means in practice, and we do not guess. Two things are within your control:

  • State your dates plainly in the dossier: degree completed, months of work, start of the MSc.
  • If you finished more than two years ago, spend a sentence on what those years give you for the programme you ranked first. The sibling guide on the MiM motivation letter with work experience covers that paragraph.

Two other dates from the page: your bachelor's must be obtained "by and no later than October 2027". English certificates "are not required" for selection, but must be provided "by the enrollment deadline and in any case by the end of June 2027" if you are admitted.

Checklist before you submit to Bocconi

  1. A GMAT, GRE or online Bocconi test score is uploaded, unless you apply to PPA or GLOBE.
  2. Your GPA is converted in the form, with the transcript to back it.
  3. The motivation is in English and names your ranked programmes.
  4. One piece of evidence serves your first and second choice.
  5. If you finished more than two years ago, your dates and what the work adds are stated.
  6. If you record the video, it uses a different story with the same facts.
  7. You know which round you are in and that it closes at 3 p.m. Italian time.

Questions about the Bocconi motivation letter

Is there a word limit for the Bocconi MSc motivation letter?

Not on the admissions page. It calls the document the "Dossier/Motivation", requires English, and states no length. Follow any limit the application form shows.

Is the Bocconi video presentation mandatory?

Not for the standard MSc rounds: the page calls it "optional". It is compulsory for IM CEMS MIM, IM Asia - China MIM, IM Asia - Bocconi-ESSEC and IM Concentration – DD ESSEC Luxury Management.

Can I apply to Bocconi in two rounds?

Not at the same time. You may apply twice in one academic year. The second application is allowed only if you were not admitted the first time, and it must update at least one element.

How many programmes can I choose in one Bocconi application?

Up to five in the standard rounds. Some International Management programmes must be entered as separate choices.
