One-Year Canada Master’s: Three-Year PGWP?
Check the actual Canadian credential, program eligibility and passport before assuming a one-year master’s gives three years of graduate work.
One-Year Canada Master’s: Three-Year PGWP?
Yes, an eligible one-year Canadian master's can support a three-year post-graduation work permit. The exception applies to master's degrees, not every course marketed as “postgraduate.” Check the awarded credential and the remaining eligibility conditions before choosing a program.
The credential matters more than the brochure
IRCC's PGWP duration rules, checked September 12, 2026, allow a three-year permit for an eligible master's shorter than two years, provided it meets the minimum eight-month duration, or 900 hours for Quebec programs. This master's exception took effect February 15, 2024. It does not cover certificates or diplomas.
A university's designated learning institution status does not establish that every program qualifies. Passport expiry can also shorten the permit issued. If you previously received a PGWP, completing another degree does not create a second entitlement.
The current eligibility page adds conditions that a duration chart misses. Master's graduates need CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French across all four language abilities; they have no field-of-study requirement. General conditions include full-time study, with a final-semester exception, and applying within 180 days of completion confirmation. Status, study location and special-case rules still matter.
Our recommendation: eliminate an unsuitable credential before comparing university rankings. An impressive course title cannot repair a mismatch between the credential you buy and the work route you are counting on.
Build a credential check before paying
Use a separate row for each offer, and attach evidence to these five questions:
- What exact award will appear on the completion documents? Ask whether it is a master's degree, graduate diploma or certificate. Do not translate a marketing label into a qualification yourself.
- Is this specific program PGWP eligible? Check the institution and program, including the delivery arrangement and location.
- Does your planned study pattern satisfy the rules? Check full-time enrollment, any leave, and online or overseas components. A flexible course arrangement deserves its own eligibility check.
- Can you document the remaining requirements? Put language evidence, completion confirmation, status and passport dates on the same calendar.
- Does the course serve your academic objective? If doctoral study is possible later, examine MEng-to-PhD research preparation separately.
Illustrative comparison
Imagine two twelve-month offers: one awards an eligible MEng; the other awards a graduate diploma in engineering management. The first may use the master's duration exception if the applicant meets the other conditions. The second cannot use that exception merely because both courses admit university graduates.
This example establishes which rule to investigate. It predicts neither applicant's permit decision. A married applicant must also check the separate student-spouse work test, which uses a different master's duration threshold.
