Civil Engineering MS Without a Civil BS?
A non-civil degree can lead to civil graduate study. Check specialization prerequisites, completion timing and extra credits before applying.
Civil Engineering MS Without a Civil BS?
Yes, some civil-engineering master's programs admit applicants without a civil bachelor's. The decisive questions are which specialization you want, which prerequisites are missing, and whether completing them adds coursework beyond the graduate degree.
Check the exact degree and specialization
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa's civil MS explicitly lists requirements for students without a civil-engineering BS. Its specified courses or equivalents must be completed with a C or better before advancement to candidacy. The list varies by concentration. Hawaiʻi civil MS requirements.
CU Denver offers a different route: a civil-engineering MEng intended for students with non-engineering undergraduate degrees. Its specialization prerequisites are additional to graduate-degree coursework. Missing preparation can be addressed through equivalent courses or documentation of equivalent coursework submitted to the academic adviser after admission. CU Denver civil MEng.
That MEng is evidence of a deliberately designed entry route, not proof that every civil MS admits every background. Check the exact credential attached to each admissions page.
Map the specialization before estimating the bridge
Start with a table containing target concentration, published prerequisite, your possible equivalent, and the university's decision on that equivalent.
Hawaiʻi illustrates why the concentration belongs in the first column:
| Intended concentration | Published non-civil-BS minimum courses |
|---|---|
| Environmental | CEE 330 and CEE 431 |
| Structures | CEE 381 and one of CEE 484, 485 or 486 |
These course codes come from Hawaiʻi's linked MS requirements. They are not a nationwide list, and the department may require additional work. An environmental-science transcript cannot be assumed to cover the structures sequence simply because both routes award a civil MS.
For each gap, obtain three separate answers:
- Timing: Must it be completed before admission, enrollment, a graduate course or candidacy?
- Sequence: Does the missing course itself require earlier courses? Check when those courses are offered before estimating the delay.
- Credit: Will it satisfy preparation only, or also count toward the master's requirements? Record explicit approval rather than assuming overlap.
CU Denver answers the credit distinction directly: its prerequisites are additional. Do not automatically apply that answer to Hawaiʻi; request the approved degree plan for that program.
An illustrative environmental-science graduate
Imagine an applicant who has studied chemistry, hydrology and GIS but has not taken civil-engineering courses. They want to work on water-quality problems and are also considering structural engineering because the degree title is familiar.
The environmental route gives them a specific starting point: compare their actual syllabi with the department's environmental prerequisites. The structures route requires a separate comparison. The applicant should not describe all missing civil coursework as one interchangeable “bridge semester.”
Suppose the chosen program approves one equivalent but requires two additional courses, and the second depends on the first. The planning problem is now a sequence across available teaching terms. An admission offer would not itself erase that sequence or establish that the courses reduce the master's credit requirement.
Before accepting, ask for the remaining requirements in writing and build a term-by-term plan with the adviser. This is a graduate-study planning decision; the examples make no claim about professional licensing.
Explain the preparation you can demonstrate
Our MOOC and prerequisite guide covers acceptable evidence and academic credit. The graduate essay hub covers application writing.
After choosing a workable route, the preparation-first SOP rubric, available through graduate statement review, can help you examine how your own statement explains completed training and remaining preparation. The program decides eligibility and course equivalence.
