Does Clinical Volunteering Count as Research?

Clinical volunteering does not automatically count as research experience for a clinical psychology PhD. It can show valuable engagement with a population, while research experience shows participation in investigating a question. Classify what you did, not just where you worked.

Why admissions pages distinguish them

Berkeley describes its clinical psychology program as research-focused. Its admissions guidance seeks laboratory or field research experience and separately recognizes clinical paid or volunteer experience as beneficial. Northwestern's clinical-psychology advising makes a related distinction. It recommends research involvement that develops understanding of theories and the questions being investigated, beyond tasks such as scheduling participants or entering data. Neither point means you should dismiss service. It means you should avoid using hours of service as a substitute for evidence the program specifically seeks about research.

Classify the role by its tasks

For each experience, answer three questions:

1. Was there a study question? Identify what the team was investigating, if anything. Learning from individual encounters is meaningful, but does not by itself establish that you participated in a research project.
2. What was your contribution? Distinguish service delivery, study administration, data collection, coding, analysis and interpretation. A supporting research role counts as work you performed; it does not entitle you to claim you designed the study.
3. What did you understand? Could you explain why the team used a measure, what a result suggested, and what remained uncertain? If you were not involved at that level, describe the boundary honestly and identify what you still need to learn.

This is an admissions-preparation exercise, not a regulatory definition of research. Ask the supervising team how the work should be described, especially when a clinic combines care, service evaluation and research.

Illustrative mixed role: A clinic volunteer spends one shift helping clients navigate appointments and another coding recorded interviews for a supervised study. The first task is service. The second is research assistance, provided it is actually part of the study. Neither the clinic's name nor the total hours should collapse those tasks into one category. Choose the next role for the missing preparation

If your record is already rich in service and thin in research, our recommendation is to investigate a supervised research role before adding another similar service commitment. Ask what you would do, who would supervise you, whether you could attend discussions of the study, and how your responsibilities might develop. An impressive lab name with no opportunity to understand the work may leave the same gap unresolved.
