How Do Neuroscience PhDs Count Research?

Count part-time neuroscience research using the target program's reporting instructions. Keep calendar duration and full-time-equivalent months separate, and exclude laboratory classes where instructed. A two-year preparation requirement does not automatically mean twenty-four months of full-time research.

Read the requirement and the form separately

Berkeley Neuroscience states that applicants must have at least two years of laboratory research experience, with part-time experience acceptable. Laboratory classes do not count. Separately, it asks applicants to report total full-time-equivalent research months using calendar months multiplied by weekly hours, divided by forty.

Those instructions answer two questions: what preparation the program expects and how applicants should report the amount of research. Do not rewrite the first as a requirement for twenty-four full-time-equivalent months. If your pattern of work makes eligibility uncertain, ask Berkeley to interpret its requirement using your actual dates and hours.

Johns Hopkins Neuroscience describes prior laboratory research as desirable and asks applicants to give months of full-time or part-time experience on the CV. Its application page does not state Berkeley's same two-year requirement. Do not carry one university's threshold into every neuroscience application.

Our recommendation: maintain one accurate record of your work, then translate it into each program's requested format. Changing the format should not change the underlying facts.

Make a research-time worksheet

For every experience, record the start and end dates, usual hours per week, supervisor, research tasks and any substantial breaks. Split a role into separate periods if the workload changed between term time and summer.

Before calculating, resolve three questions:

1. Was this research or a taught laboratory class? A course name or campus location alone does not describe the work. For ambiguous project modules, explain the supervision and investigation to the program rather than silently deciding they qualify.
2. What hours actually belonged to research? Separate unrelated administrative or service work within a mixed role. The clinical volunteering versus research guide explains why task labels matter.
3. Are any hours counted twice? Two supervisors or project titles do not turn the same afternoon into two afternoons. Separate concurrent work honestly and avoid duplicating shared hours.

Use documented or supportable averages when hours vary. Keep the calculation alongside the original dates so you can explain it consistently on the form, CV and in an interview.

A worked example with two valid totals

Illustrative calculation, created for this guide: An applicant worked in a neuroscience lab for six months at twenty hours per week, followed by two summer months at forty hours per week.

The record contains eight calendar months of research and five full-time-equivalent months. Neither number is dishonest; each needs the correct label. Laboratory classes taken alongside this work add nothing to Berkeley's research-experience count.

The arithmetic does not decide whether this applicant meets a program's preparation requirement. Nor does it describe their scientific contribution. They still need to explain what question the lab investigated, what they did and what they learned.
