Common App Honors for Indian Students: Olympiads
List Olympiads, school ranks and board merit in the Common App honors section: up to 5 honors, and which level (school, state, national) each one is.
Common App Honors for Indian Students: Olympiads
Yes, list your Olympiad in the Common App honors section, at the stage you actually reached. The section takes up to 5 academic honors. For each one you give the title, the grade you received it in, and the level: school, state or regional, national, or international.
Our view: report the level you reached, not the level the competition is named for. Clearing the first stage of an Olympiad is not an international honor, even though the program leads to one. A reader who checks the official stage structure, quoted below, will see the difference. Overclaiming one honor makes a reader doubt the other four.
Every Common App and Olympiad page quoted below was checked on October 30, 2026. For the rest of the form, see the Common App for international students, step by step.
What the honors section asks
Common App's September 2026 checklist says (Common App, Gather your materials):
"You can include up to 5 academic honors you received during high school. You'll need to include the honor's title, when you received it, and the level of recognition you received (regional or national, for example)."
The most recent printable application we found (2025–26) gives the exact fields (Common App 2025–26 printable application):
"List any honors you have received related to your academic achievements beginning with the ninth grade or international equivalent."
The grade boxes are 9, 10, 11, 12 and PG (post-graduate). The level boxes are "S (School) S/R (State or regional) N (National) I (International)." The section is marked optional.
What we could not verify: the character limit for the honor title. Neither Common App document states it. Check the counter in your own account. The constructed entries below are kept short so they fit a tight limit.
Three things follow for Indian applicants:
- Class IX counts. "Beginning with the ninth grade" means Class IX onward. A Class VIII award does not go here.
- Board marks are not honors. Your Class X percentage goes in the Education section, not here. See CBSE marks in the Common App Education section.
- "Academic" is the word. Our view: sports and arts awards are better placed in the activity entry they belong to.
How the Indian Olympiad stages are structured
The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) calls itself "the nodal centre of the country" for India's national Olympiad program. Its homepage says the science Olympiads in Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Junior Science and Physics are "a five stage process for each subject separately," and that "The first stage for each subject is organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT)" (HBCSE Olympiads).
The 2026–27 science brochure names the stages (HBCSE, Science Olympiad brochure 2026–27):
| Stage | Name | Who runs it |
|---|---|---|
| I | National Standard Examinations (NSEs) | IAPT |
| II | Indian National Olympiad Examinations (INOs) | HBCSE |
| III | Orientation-Cum-Selection Camps (OCSCs) | HBCSE |
| IV | Training of Indian teams for International Olympiads | HBCSE |
| V | Participation in International Olympiads | Indian team abroad |
The brochure also says a student "will receive a Certificate of Merit in every subject in which his/her score is equal to or higher than the score of the last selected student in that subject," selected for the camp.
For mathematics, HBCSE's 2026–27 page lists the first three stages: the Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM), the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) and the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) (HBCSE, Mathematical Olympiad 2026–2027). The homepage calls the mathematics program "a five stage process" under the National Board for Higher Mathematics. Two science exceptions to the table: the HBCSE homepage says the later stages for junior-level Astronomy "are handled by the National Centre for Science Museums (NCSM)", and the Junior Science stages are run "entirely by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers" (HBCSE, Science Olympiad 2026–2027).
Which level is your Indian award?
This table is our guidance, not a Common App rule. Common App gives the four levels. It does not say how to map an Indian award to them.
| Your award | Level to tick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Class rank or subject topper at your school | S | Ranked against your school only |
| Inter-school, district or city competition | S/R | Regional field |
| State-level competition or state board merit list | S/R | State field |
| Board merit certificate | The scope printed on the certificate | The certificate says who you were ranked against |
| Sat the NSE or IOQM, not selected for the next stage | Leave it out | Taking an exam is not an honor |
| Selected for an INO after the NSE | N | National selection, Stage II |
| Qualified for RMO from IOQM | S/R | The second mathematics stage is regional by name |
| Selected for INMO, or an INMO awardee | N | National stage |
| OCSC selection or Certificate of Merit | N | National camp |
| Medal or participation at an International Olympiad | I | International competition |
| A school-level "olympiad" run by a private company | Your actual ranking: S or S/R | The word "International" in the name does not make the field international |
The countercase: if a private competition genuinely ranked you against students from several countries and the certificate says so, "I" can be honest. Use the certificate's wording as your test.
Ten constructed honor entries
Constructed examples, written by us, not real applicant entries. Each title is shorter than 90 characters (our count). The years are the 2025–26 and 2026–27 cycles.
| # | Honor title | Grade | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | INPhO qualifier (2025–26 cycle): selected via NSEP (Stage I) for Stage II | 11 | N |
| 2 | Certificate of Merit, INChO (2025–26 cycle), HBCSE | 11 | N |
| 3 | RMO qualifier (2024–25 cycle), selected via IOQM | 10 | S/R |
| 4 | INMO participant (2025–26 cycle), selected through RMO | 11 | N |
| 5 | School topper, Class X CBSE board exam, 2025 | 10 | S |
| 6 | First place, inter-school science quiz, Nashik district, 2025 | 10 | S/R |
| 7 | State merit list, Class X board exam, 2025 | 10 | S/R |
| 8 | Subject prize in Mathematics, Class XI, 2026 | 11 | S |
| 9 | Gold, school-level round of a private maths olympiad, ranked 1st in school | 9 | S |
| 10 | Best project, district science exhibition, 2026 | 11 | S/R |
You can list only five. Pick the five with the widest field first: N before S/R before S. Entry 9 is in the table to show the honest level for a private olympiad, not because it should make your top five.
Honors or activities?
- The result goes in honors. A selection, a rank, a certificate.
- What you chose to do goes in activities. Running a maths circle, leading a science club, building a project. Paid coaching classes for an exam are not an activity in our view. Our guide to extracurriculars for US colleges from India explains why.
- One thing should not take two slots. If an Olympiad honor and an activity describe the same thing, keep the honor and use the activity slot for something else.
The activities side is covered in detail in our Common App activities examples. If you are thinking of writing your personal essay about the Olympiad, read STEM college essays beyond the Olympiad first.
Questions about honors for Indian students
Can I add an Olympiad to the Common App honors section?
Yes, at the stage you reached. Common App allows "up to 5 academic honors."
Is an Olympiad a national or international honor?
It depends on the stage. Stage V is international. Selection for Stage II or the camp is national. Sitting Stage I alone is not an honor.
Should I list school ranks?
Yes, as "S", if you have fewer than five stronger honors. A rank is an academic honor.
Where do I explain an honor a US reader won't know?
Keep the title clear enough to stand alone, as in the entries above. If a reader genuinely needs more, one line in Additional Information is enough. Our page on what belongs in Common App Additional Information shows the format. For the section's rules, the four recognition levels and what goes in Activities instead, see what counts in the Common App Honors section.
