How Many Projects Belong in a CS SOP?

Two, described. Three at the outside. The word cap does the arithmetic: a project a reader can question you about costs roughly a hundred words, and the statement also owes a direction, your preparation and your reasons for this program.

The cap decides the count, not your résumé

Computing statements are shorter than the advice assumes — the published limits run from a few hundred words up to one or two pages, and how long yours may be is printed on your program's own page. Take a mid-range cap of 500 to 750 words. A project described so that it can be questioned — what you decided, what happened, what it changed about your direction — takes 90 to 120 of them. Three of those and the statement is nothing but projects.

The real choice is not how many projects to include but how many you can afford to describe.

MIT's EECS department publishes what its faculty look for, and one of them puts the cost plainly: "Your CV, other sections of the applications, and recommendation letters will talk about past projects, and it's a pity to use your essay to rehash it again." That page is doctoral-admissions guidance, and a taught master's leans on built work more heavily — but the arithmetic is identical: anything a reader can get from your CV is paid for twice.

A three-question test for each project

  1. Can you say what you personally decided or built, in one sentence, without the word "we"?
  2. Is there a result you can name — a number, a failure, a thing you stopped believing?
  3. Does it support the direction you named in your opening paragraph?

Three yeses: describe it. Two: it earns a clause inside a sentence that groups similar work, not a paragraph. Fewer: it belongs on the CV, where it will be read anyway.

That usually leaves one flagship and one supporting project. A third earns its place only when it covers something the prompt explicitly asks about — an application you built end to end, a leadership question — not a second instance of what the flagship already proves.

The same space, spent both ways

Described — one project, 71 words: Our recommendation engine ran on collaborative filtering until I looked at who it failed: every user with fewer than five ratings got the same four bestsellers. I built the cold-start path that falls back to content features, and repeat purchases from new accounts rose. The fix works and I cannot explain why it works, because I have never evaluated a recommender properly. That is the gap the machine-learning sequence is for.

The first names three projects and leaves a reader nothing to ask about. The second spends the identical space on one, and every sentence does a job the CV cannot: a decision, a result, an admitted limit, a reason for the degree.
