Dual Master's: Can I Combine Any Two Offers?

Two master's offers do not automatically create a dual degree. Before accepting a combined plan, verify that the university authorizes that exact pairing and understand its curriculum, school residency requirements and degree-conferral conditions.

An approved combination has its own rules

Columbia SIPA explicitly says students cannot construct ad hoc dual degrees. Its approved arrangements require admission to both participating schools and communication with advisers so the dual-degree status is recorded. SIPA also describes required periods of registration in the participating schools, rather than simultaneous registration in both. Students remain responsible for the relevant requirements, and the two degrees are awarded together after both programs are complete. Do not assume one credential can be collected early while the other remains unfinished.

A different university may approve a combination that initially sounds unusual. Duke lists a three-year dual program joining its Master of Public Policy with Pratt's Master of Engineering Management. Its general dual-degree sequence begins with public-policy study and a summer internship, followed by the other program and completion of remaining requirements. Duke Sanford dual degrees.

Duke also lists an environmental-management combination. Read the full degree and school names: the abbreviation MEM alone does not distinguish those programs.

Build a combined-degree worksheet

Obtain answers for the actual pairing, not for dual degrees in general:

1. Authorization: Is this combination formally listed, or has the appropriate university office approved it through a documented process?
2. Admission and status: What admissions decisions and internal notifications establish your participation?
3. Residency sequence: Which school registers you in each term, and what required work belongs in those terms?
4. Credit accounting: Which courses, if any, can satisfy requirements in both programs? Ask for the approved curriculum rather than doing your own subtraction.
5. Conferral: Must both programs be completed before either degree can be awarded?

Use those answers to produce a term-by-term plan. Put required projects and internships into the plan before optional courses. Then ask both programs to confirm that the same schedule satisfies their rules.

If a proposed change delays one side of the combination, recheck what happens to the other degree's award. Linked conferral can make an unfinished requirement more consequential than it appears in a simple list of credits.

An illustrative pair of offers

Illustrative case: An applicant receives two Columbia master's offers, one from SIPA, but the proposed combination is not an approved SIPA pairing. They want to share electives and call the result a dual degree.

The published no-ad-hoc rule means the offers alone do not authorize that plan. They should ask about permissible enrollment choices rather than assume they can create a shortened combined curriculum.

Compare an applicant considering Duke's explicitly listed MPP and engineering-management combination. Here, the approved pairing exists. The remaining task is to understand its admissions conditions, sequence and required work. The listing does not establish that every personal course preference will fit.

Write to each program's purpose
