Economics Math Camp: Must You Arrive Early?

You may need to attend economics math camp before the semester even if your mathematics is strong. Attendance rules belong to the specific degree: Georgetown's Economics MS makes camp mandatory, while Columbia's Economics PhD strongly recommends it without requiring it.

The degree's rule matters more than the name

Georgetown's MS in Economics includes a mandatory two-week math camp before the first fall semester. Its curriculum identifies the camp as noncredit and says there is no additional cost. Columbia's incoming Economics PhD FAQ explicitly says math camp is not required, although it is strongly recommended. That gives an incoming student a different attendance decision. These examples compare two particular degrees. They do not show that master's camps are generally mandatory or that PhD camps are generally optional.

Put four different obligations on your timeline

Before using the university's semester start as your first required day, separate four items:

• Admission preparation: The mathematics you need to enter or demonstrate readiness for the degree. A promised camp does not establish that an admissions prerequisite has been waived.
• Required camp or orientation: A program activity with its own attendance rule, potentially before credit-bearing classes begin. Find the current cohort's schedule and any instructions for requesting an exception.
• Recommended preparation: An activity you can evaluate against your preparation and competing commitments when the program explicitly makes attendance optional.
• Semester teaching: The start of the regular courses. This is one date in the plan, not necessarily the first program obligation.

Beside each item, record its source, required or optional status, start and end, and whether the program has confirmed the delivery format. Treat an unpublished timetable as unresolved. Avoid carrying last year's dates into a new intake simply because the camp has the same name.

Test the plan with a strong-math applicant

Illustrative comparison: An applicant has completed advanced calculus and linear algebra and intends to finish a job immediately before regular classes start. They assume a preparatory camp can be skipped because they already know the topics.

For Georgetown's MS, the mandatory two-week camp creates an earlier scheduling requirement. The applicant asks for the current timetable and whether any exception is available before committing to the work end date. Until the program confirms an exception, the workable plan includes camp attendance.

For Columbia's PhD, the published optional status makes the choice different. The applicant can ask what this year's sessions cover and compare those topics with recent coursework. The practical result is a calendar built around actual obligations, with unresolved questions visible before commitments are made. It is more useful than guessing attendance from the word “noncredit.”
