Gap in Your CV for Germany: Lebenslauf and Letter
Gap in your CV for a German master's? TUM says a stated gap will not hurt. Label it in the CV; the motivation letter needs a line in only two cases.
Gap in Your CV for Germany: Lebenslauf and Letter
A gap in your CV for a German master's goes in the CV, as a labelled row, not in the motivation letter. TUM asks for no gap longer than 3 months after school and says that if you state a gap, "It will not have a negative impact on your application."
With a gap year, a year of exam preparation or a degree you left, it is tempting to write a paragraph about it in the Motivationsschreiben. That paragraph answers a question the TUM letter does not ask. This page shows where each kind of gap goes, with constructed CV rows by cause, and the two cases where the letter does need a sentence. When the letter is drafted, the German motivation letter rubric reads it for programme choice, preparation and motivation.
Every TUM, uni-assist and German Missions in India page quoted below was checked on 31 October 2026. None of them states a cycle year. Each university sets its own document rules, so read your programme's page as well.
The rules you are writing inside
| Source | What it says | What it means for a gap |
|---|---|---|
| TUM style guide | "If you have a gap in your CV where you have not studied or worked, then simply state this." | The CV row is the explanation |
| TUM style guide, same section | "Please be sure to indicate if you have already been enrolled at another university or college, as any previous studies must be recorded." | A degree you left is not a gap; it is a row |
| uni-assist, other documents | "Do not leave out any period. If you were not enrolled at university or did not work for a time, write 'no special activities / no studies'." | Short labels are the expected form |
| uni-assist, educational certificates | For master's applications: "Please upload all certificates in their entirety." | The transcripts show the same dates as your CV |
| German Missions in India, study visa | "CV in English or German in table form, listing all previous training, qualifications and activities" | The visa CV must carry the same rows |
TUM adds one more sentence that settles what the gap row is for: "The only important thing is that you have not studied at another university during this period." The format rules around these lines (time order, month and year, Europass) are in the German master's CV guide; this page is only about the gap.
Why the letter is the wrong place for most gaps
TUM tells you what the letter must answer: "Please make sure that you always answer these 3 questions in your letter of motivation: Why did you choose this degree program and TUM? How are you suited for this degree program? Are you particularly motivated to successfully complete this degree program?" It also says "A statement of purpose should generally be no longer than one page."
None of the three questions is about gaps. On a one-page letter, a gap paragraph takes space from the three answers TUM does ask for.
Our view: label the gap in the CV and leave it out of the letter, unless the gap is part of your answer to one of TUM's three questions. TUM has already told you the stated gap will not count against you; a letter paragraph defending it treats it as a problem the university says it is not.
The countercase: TUM's style guide speaks for TUM. Another university may publish a different rule or ask a direct question about gaps on its form. If it does, answer there, in the length it gives. And the rule is about time you did not study. A degree you started elsewhere is a different matter, covered below.
How to label common gaps
Constructed examples, written by us, not real applicants' CVs. Each row uses month and year, as TUM asks, and a label of a few words. The dates are invented.
| Period | Activity | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 07/2023 – 02/2024 | Preparation for GATE (engineering entrance exam), self-study | No studies |
| 03/2024 – 09/2024 | Job search; freelance CAD drafting for two small firms | Part-time work |
| 10/2024 – 05/2025 | Family care: full-time care of a parent | No studies |
| 06/2025 – 03/2026 | Waiting for visa after deferred admission | No studies |
| 08/2021 – 01/2022 | B.Sc. Physics, Sample University (invented), one semester, left without degree | Previous studies |
What each row does:
- Exam preparation is named once, with the exam. If you sat the exam, the result can go in its own row; the UPSC, GATE and CAT preparation gap guide covers how to describe that year in an SOP for other countries.
- Freelance or part-time work is work, so it gets a work row with what you did. Do not label it as a gap.
- Family care needs no detail beyond the fact. TUM asks you to "simply state" the gap.
- A visa wait names the cause in four words. If it followed an admission elsewhere that you did not take up, check whether you enrolled; if you did, it is previous studies.
- A degree you left must appear, with its dates, under TUM's rule that "any previous studies must be recorded". Leaving it out breaks that rule.
The weak version of the same CV runs "2023 – 2026: Preparation and family obligations". It hides three different periods in a year-only range, and it drops the freelance work that is the strongest row in it.
The two cases where the letter needs a sentence
Case 1: the gap produced your motivation. If the freelance CAD work is why you now want a master's in mechanical design, that is an answer to "Why did you choose this degree program", and it belongs in the letter.
Case 2: you left a degree and are changing field. The CV shows the semester; the letter may need one sentence on why this programme is the right one, because that is TUM's "How are you suited" question.
Two constructed examples, written by us, not real applicant statements:
Weak version:
I would like to explain the gap in my education. After my B.Tech I spent some time preparing for competitive exams and handling family responsibilities, which was a difficult period for me, but it taught me resilience and I am now fully ready to continue my studies.
Revised version, Case 1:
Seven months of freelance CAD drafting for two small manufacturers showed me where my design training stopped: neither firm could check its parts for fatigue before tooling. The programme's module on fatigue and fracture mechanics is the reason I am applying to it rather than to a general mechanical master's.
Why the revision works: it uses the gap period as evidence for a TUM question, names a module, and says nothing defensive. The weak version spends its words on the gap itself and answers none of the three questions. For a one-semester degree you left, one plain sentence such as "I left a B.Sc. in Physics after one semester to move into engineering, where my interest in applied mechanics began" is enough. More on letter structure is in the German master's motivation letter sample.
The embassy letter is a different reader
The study visa file has its own letter and its own CV. German Missions in India ask for a letter on "why you would like to study in Germany, why you have chosen the specific degree programme and university, how you found that university and what your plans are after graduation", and a CV in table form "listing all previous training, qualifications and activities". Use the same gap rows, with the same dates, in both CVs. How the visa letter handles gaps and work years is in the Germany student visa SOP sample, and the two letters are compared in visa vs university motivation letter. The visa process itself is set out on the German Missions page linked above.
Decide in four questions
- Is the period longer than 3 months? If not, TUM's 3-month rule does not require a row, but a university that follows uni-assist's "Do not leave out any period" does. If yes, go on.
- Were you enrolled at any university or college in it? If yes, it is a previous-studies row with dates, not a gap.
- Did you work, even part-time or freelance? If yes, it is a work row with what you did.
- Does the period answer one of TUM's three questions? If yes, one or two sentences in the letter. If no, the CV row is the whole explanation.
Questions about gaps in German applications
Do I need proof for a gap year?
The CV sections of the TUM and uni-assist pages quoted here do not ask for proof of a gap; TUM says to "simply state" it. What the rules do require is that a period of study is never labelled as a gap.
Should I use Europass for a CV with gaps?
TUM says "You are welcome to use the European Union template for your CV." The gap rule applies whichever layout you use. The trade-offs are in the German master's CV guide.
Is a gap after my bachelor's a problem for a German master's?
TUM's answer, for TUM: a stated gap "will not have a negative impact on your application." Other universities' pages may say nothing. For gaps in an SOP for US or UK applications, where the document is read differently, see how to explain a gap year in your SOP.
Does uni-assist read my motivation letter?
That question, and who reads the letter instead, is covered in does uni-assist read your motivation letter. On the CV and in the letter, state your CGPA on its own scale; the university converts it.
The same gap will come up if you are interviewed; see gap year questions in a grad interview.
