Do HCI Master's Programs Need Portfolios?

Some HCI master's programs require a portfolio; others do not. Before creating new UX projects, check the exact application instructions. Existing software, research or writing may be acceptable evidence, depending on the program.

Required and optional mean different things

Carnegie Mellon's MHCI application labels examples of work optional and explicitly says they are not required for admission. Its examples extend beyond design portfolios to GitHub repositories, research reports, writing, entrepreneurial work and community or policy initiatives. CMU MHCI admissions.

UC Santa Cruz's HCI MS requires an online portfolio, but the work need not be directly related to HCI or UX. Student, industry and personal work can be included. Its instructions ask applicants to explain the work and their individual contributions; links must be accessible without passwords or specialized software. UCSC HCI application requirements.

UCSC's FAQ also says prior HCI experience and a programming background are not required. A required portfolio therefore does not mean every applicant must arrive as an experienced UX designer. UCSC HCI FAQ.

These are specific program rules. An online discussion about what one successful applicant submitted cannot replace the instructions for your own application.

Audit existing work before inventing another project

Make two passes through the application.

First, establish the submission rule: required, optional or encouraged. Record the allowed formats, size limits, access requirements and any instructions about group or industry work. Optional material is a choice about useful evidence; required material is part of completing the application.

Second, inventory work you already own and can legitimately share. Ask what each item allows a reader to understand:

• What problem did you investigate or address?
• What decisions were yours?
• What did you produce, test or learn?
• Can the reader distinguish your contribution from the team's?

For a group project, explain the boundary of your role. For industry work, check permission before including it. UCSC explicitly requires appropriate permission for industry material. A portfolio should not turn someone else's restricted information into application evidence.

Do not assume the admissions committee will install your application or reconstruct its purpose from a repository. Follow the program's presentation instructions so the relevant work can be understood in the permitted format.

A company project also needs an assessable final output; compare company thesis confidentiality and university examination before assuming employer secrecy and degree requirements can coexist.

An illustrative software-engineer case

Imagine an engineer who built an internal scheduling tool. They have code, a short evaluation report and notes showing how staff feedback changed the interface, but no polished UX case study.

At a program that permits these kinds of work, the immediate task may be presenting the existing evidence clearly. The applicant can explain the scheduling problem, their role, the feedback and the design changes, using only material they have permission to share.

If the useful material is confidential, they need another permissible example or a new project. The reason is an evidence-access problem, not a universal requirement to manufacture several UX redesigns before applying.

Where work samples are optional, ask whether the proposed item adds something substantive to the rest of the application. Do not submit a large collection merely because uploads are possible.

Keep the statement and portfolio doing their own jobs

For feedback on your own statement, use the master's SOP rubric through graduate statement review. That review addresses the statement, not the portfolio, design quality or code.
