How to Withdraw From a Medical School Waitlist
Withdraw from a medical school waitlist by email to each school, before your Commit to Enroll deadline. 2027 dates and a 53-word constructed email.
How to Withdraw From a Medical School Waitlist
Email each school's admissions office yourself, and do it before you select Commit to Enroll. Duke's prehealth office, restating the AAMC protocol, says "the 'Commit to Enroll' does not notify schools, you need to contact every school personally." For the 2026-2027 cycle, Cincinnati sets that deadline at June 25, 2027, 12:00 PM ET.
Our view: withdraw from every waitlist you would not take over the seat you hold, on the day you know it, and from all the rest before your Commit to Enroll click. Schools do not agree on what that click does to their own list. USF treats it as an automatic withdrawal. OHSU says it is not one. An email settles it at every school.
Every school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. AAMC's own traffic-rules and Choose Your Medical School pages returned HTTP 403 to our fetch that day, so AAMC rules are quoted from the school pages that restate them.
What your Commit to Enroll click does at each school
This is the fact that decides whether you need to write at all. Four school pages give four different answers. Plan to Enroll vs Commit to Enroll quotes the schools that close their lists; OHSU and UVA are the ones that do not:
| School | What the page says about Commit to Enroll elsewhere |
|---|---|
| USF Morsani | "will result in an automatic withdrawal" |
| OHSU | "selecting 'commit to enroll' for another institution through AMCAS does not automatically withdraw your application from OHSU." |
| Cincinnati | No offers after a commitment elsewhere, and "you MUST email us to withdraw your application." |
| UVA | Keeps Alternate List candidates "under consideration until the first day of orientation or until an applicant matriculates at another medical school, whichever comes first." |
USF withdraws you. OHSU keeps you and skips over only "applicants who have withdrawn their application by contacting us directly." Cincinnati stops offering but still asks for the email. UVA's page names matriculation, not the Commit to Enroll click, as the end point. If you assume the USF rule at OHSU, a seat can be offered to you that you will not take, and the applicant behind you waits.
The three moments to withdraw
Withdraw at the first of these that applies to a given school.
| Moment | What the rule says | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Now: you hold an acceptance you prefer | Swarthmore's health sciences office: withdraw from schools "you know you would not attend over the school where you've been accepted." | Email that school's waitlist today |
| April 15 and April 30, 2027 | You may stay on waitlists. USC Greenville: "You may remain on as many Alternate Lists for other schools as you like if you have Plan to Enroll status at our School." | Keep only waitlists you would take over your Plan to Enroll seat |
| Your committed school's Commit to Enroll deadline | Cincinnati (MD, 2026-2027): June 25, 2027, 12:00 PM ET. USC Greenville: May 14, 2027, 11:59PM ET. Both: "Withdraw from all Alternate Lists (i.e. email those schools directly)." | Email every remaining waitlist, then select Commit to Enroll |
Two schools set tighter clocks. Yale's page says applicants who "'plan' to enroll must 'commit' to enroll and immediately withdraw from waitlists at all other schools" by June 15; the timeline names no year. USC Greenville gives an applicant accepted from its list after May 14, 2027 "48 hours" to select Commit to Enroll. If a waitlist offer arrives late, you may have days, not weeks, to send every withdrawal. The full calendar is in the AMCAS traffic rules for 2027.
The countercase: if you genuinely prefer a waitlist school over your Plan to Enroll seat, staying on that one list until your committed school's deadline is what the rules allow. Withdraw from the others now and keep that one. If you cannot tell whether a list is worth keeping, ask the school about its waitlist process first.
Where to send it
Send it to the school, in writing. The pages we checked name email or direct contact, not a form inside AMCAS:
- UVM: "Please let us know by email at lcom.admissions@med.uvm.edu if you decide to decline your seat in our class or on our waitlist." (Interview Outcomes)
- UC San Diego: your application "will remain under consideration until/unless you explicitly inform us that you wish to withdraw your application." (FAQs)
- OHSU: "we need to receive your notice of withdrawal directly."
- Cincinnati and USC Greenville: "email those schools directly."
Use the admissions address on the school's page or in your waitlist letter. We could not open AAMC's Choose Your Medical School page (HTTP 403), so this page does not describe its screens.
The email (constructed example)
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. Context (invented): Davor Chatterjee, AAMC ID 00000000, has chosen another school.
Subject: Withdrawal from waitlist, Davor Chatterjee, AAMC ID 00000000
Dear Admissions Committee,
Please withdraw my application from your waitlist for the 2027 entering class. I have accepted a seat at another medical school.
Thank you for considering my application. I am grateful for the time your committee spent on it.
Sincerely, Davor Chatterjee
That is 53 words including the subject line. It does what the schools above ask: it says "withdraw" in the first sentence, names the cycle, and carries the AAMC ID so staff can find the file. It gives no reason beyond one clause and does not name the other school. Cincinnati's own rule for admitted applicants asks to hear "that an offer was received," expressly "not from whom." If you want a warmer close, one extra line ("I enjoyed meeting your students on interview day") is enough.
Send one email per school. A group email with schools in the "To" line is not a withdrawal any office can file.
After you send it
- Keep the reply. If none arrives within a week, forward your sent email once and ask for confirmation.
- Check the school's portal if it has one. Cincinnati, for example, runs waitlist confirmation through its MedOneStop status page.
- Then select Commit to Enroll. Duke's restatement of the AAMC protocol puts the order this way: contact every school "prior to selecting 'Commit to Enroll' in the Choose Your Medical School Tool."
Send it only when you are sure. None of the pages above describes a way back onto a list after you withdraw.
Questions about leaving a waitlist
Can I stay on waitlists after Commit to Enroll?
Not under the rule Duke restates: Commit to Enroll "indicates that you have withdrawn your application from any other school where you were accepted or were on an alternate/wait list." If a waitlist school is still your first choice, stay at Plan to Enroll. The guide to getting off a waitlist after Commit to Enroll covers the case where an offer arrives anyway.
Do I need to give a reason?
No school page we checked asks for one. A single clause such as "I have accepted a seat at another medical school" is enough.
Should I withdraw from a waitlist or decline an acceptance first?
Both go by email to the school. Declining an acceptance has its own April 15 and April 30 limits; see how to decline a medical school acceptance.
Does withdrawing from a waitlist affect a future application?
None of the waitlist pages above says it does.
For what goes in that letter or an update, see the waitlist update letter guide; more guides are on the medical school essays hub.
Review the writing you send next
If you are keeping one waitlist, the next thing you write is a letter of intent to that one school. Get a free Quick Review of your letter of intent to check that it gives a specific reason for the school and states your commitment at its true strength. If you have news for that school, the update letter rubric reads for what changed.
