Withdraw a Medical School Application: When and How

Withdraw a pending medical school application by emailing that school's admissions office, the week your first acceptance arrives, for every school you would not choose over it. Swarthmore's health sciences office puts the rule in one line: withdraw from schools "you know you would not attend over the school where you've been accepted."

Our view: your first acceptance is a sorting tool. Before it, every pending school is a maybe. After it, each one answers a single question, and you can answer it the same day. Withdrawing is the one part of the cycle you control completely, and it frees interview slots and committee time for applicants who still need them.

Every school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. AAMC's AMCAS pages returned HTTP 403 to our fetch that day, so this page does not describe any withdrawal screen inside AMCAS. Declining an offer you already hold is a different email, covered in how to decline a medical school acceptance.

The decision rule after your first acceptance

Ask one question of each pending school: would I choose this school over the acceptance I hold?

Your answerWhat to doBasis
NoWithdraw this week. Cancel any interview there.Swarthmore: "It is a courtesy to other candidates and to the medical schools themselves to cancel scheduled interviews at schools you know you would not choose over the one where you've been accepted."
YesKeep it.Duke, restating the AAMC protocol: you "can hold more than one acceptance, continue to interview with other medical schools, and remain on alternate/waitlists up until April 30."
Only if its aid is betterKeep it until the aid comparison is possible.Swarthmore names the exception: "if you are waiting to see what financial aid you will receive, or if you are gathering information to help make your decision."

When a second acceptance arrives, run the same test between the two. Swarthmore again: "When you receive two acceptances, choose between the two and withdraw from the one you like less."

The countercase: if your first acceptance is from a school you would be unhappy at, or one you cannot afford without aid you have not seen, the rule gives you few withdrawals. That is the right result: keep the pending schools you would prefer, and let the 2027 deadlines force the rest. USC Greenville's page lists them for the 2026–2027 cycle: April 15, 2027, "Email to withdraw your application from all but THREE of your acceptances", and April 30, 2027, "all but ONE" (USC Greenville). The guide to choosing between medical school acceptances covers that comparison.

Constructed example: one acceptance, five pending schools

Constructed example, invented for this guide. Context (invented): an applicant is accepted at School A, her in-state school, in January.

Pending schoolWould she choose it over A?Action
School B, interview completeYes: her first choiceKeep
School C, interview next monthNo: higher cost, no program she wantsWithdraw and cancel the interview
School D, secondary submittedNoWithdraw
School E, secondary submittedOnly with a large scholarshipKeep until aid offers arrive
School F, no response yetNoWithdraw

Three withdrawals the same week (C, D, F), one interview slot freed, and two schools kept (B and E).

How withdrawal actually works

You withdraw at the school, in writing. The school pages we checked describe direct contact, not a step inside AMCAS:

  • OHSU: "If you decide not to enroll at OHSU, we need to receive your notice of withdrawal directly." (OHSU admissions)
  • UC San Diego, on its waitlist: your application "will remain under consideration until/unless you explicitly inform us that you wish to withdraw your application." (UCSD FAQs)
  • UVA, for admitted applicants: "Please submit a written request to the Admissions Office". (UVA admissions)

The AMCAS Choose Your Medical School tool does not send these messages for you. Duke's restatement of the AAMC protocol says "the 'Commit to Enroll' does not notify schools, you need to contact every school personally." The AMCAS traffic rules for 2027 cover the tool's dates.

DO applications run on AACOMAS, and its help center states the rule in writing: "Once you submit your application to a program, you cannot remove it. To withdraw yourself from consideration for admission to a program, contact the program directly." (AACOMAS help) The DO acceptance decline guide covers the rest of that system.

Use the admissions email on the school's site, or reply through its applicant portal if it has a withdrawal option. Send one message per school.

Withdrawing after an interview invite

If you have an invite at a school that fails the test above, decline the interview the day you decide. The medical school interview invite reply guide has the decline template. If you have already interviewed and the decision is pending, use the second email below: the committee may be about to spend a seat on you.

Emails (constructed examples)

Constructed example: withdrawing a pending application

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. Context (invented): Nkiru Saavedra, AAMC ID 00000000, submitted a secondary in September and has an acceptance elsewhere.

Subject: Application withdrawal, Nkiru Saavedra, AAMC ID 00000000

Dear Admissions Office,

Please withdraw my application for the 2027 entering class. I have accepted an offer at another medical school and no longer wish to be considered.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Nkiru Saavedra

That is 44 words including the subject line. The subject line carries the action and the ID. The first sentence carries the request. Nothing else is needed.

Constructed example: withdrawing after an interview, decision pending

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. Context (invented): Tunde Tran, AAMC ID 00000000, interviewed in November and has since decided on another school.

Subject: Withdrawal after interview, Tunde Tran, AAMC ID 00000000

Dear Admissions Committee,

I interviewed with you on November 12, and I am grateful for the conversations I had that day. I have since decided to attend another medical school, and I am withdrawing my application for the 2027 entering class so that the committee can consider other applicants.

Thank you again for the opportunity.

Sincerely, Tunde Tran

That is 67 words including the subject line. Naming the interview date helps staff find the file fast at a busy point in the cycle. It names no school and gives no ranking.

Questions about withdrawing an application

Should I withdraw my other applications after my first acceptance?

Withdraw the ones you would not choose over it, that week. Keep the ones you would. Swarthmore's exception covers schools you are keeping only for aid.

Is there an AMCAS button to withdraw from one school?

We could not open AAMC's pages (HTTP 403), so we do not describe one. The school pages above tell you to contact the school directly. AACOMAS says the same for DO programs once you have submitted.

Do I need to give a reason?

No school page we checked asks for one. "I have accepted an offer at another medical school" is enough.

Can I withdraw after an interview?

Yes. Send the second email above as soon as you decide. Waiting for the decision only takes a seat or a waitlist place someone else could use.

Review the writing you send next

If one of the schools you keep has you on hold or on a waitlist, your next message is a letter of interest or intent. Get a free Quick Review of your letter of intent to check that it gives a specific reason for that school and states your interest at its true strength; for news since your interview, use the update letter rubric.
