Irish Master’s: Is Stamp 1G Really Two Years?

An eligible one-year Irish master's can lead to up to two years on graduate Stamp 1G. But the initial permission is 12 months; the second year requires renewal and evidence of suitable graduate-job search. Course length alone does not establish eligibility.

Check the award before counting the months

Ireland's Third Level Graduate Programme distinguishes qualification level from permission duration. Eligible graduates with an award at Level 9 or above on the National Framework of Qualifications receive 12 months initially. A further 12 months depends on meeting the renewal conditions, including the overall limit on student conditions.

The official page gives examples of evidence for renewal: attending interviews and registering with graduate employment agencies. “Two years after a master's” is therefore a possible sequence of permissions, not a single unconditional entitlement handed out with the degree.

For an Indian applicant comparing master's offers, verify the exact award and recognized Irish awarding body. Do not rely on a brochure's “postgraduate” label or assume a longer course automatically produces a longer graduate permission.

The official stamp conditions also draw an employment boundary: graduate Stamp 1G permits full-time employment, but not operating a business or self-employment. That distinction matters if your plan depends on freelancing rather than finding an employed graduate role.

Build an award-to-renewal checklist

Use this original procedure to check an offer and the eventual transition:

StageQuestion to resolve
Before acceptingWhat is the exact award, NFQ level and awarding body?
Before completionWhen will the institution formally notify me that I achieved the award?
Graduate applicationWill my Stamp 2 and registration still be current when I apply?
First year on 1GWhat evidence am I retaining of steps toward suitable graduate employment?
Before expiryWhat are the current renewal or employment-permit requirements?

The programme requires application within six months of award notification while holding current Stamp 2 permission and registration. An official confirmation of achievement can substitute for the parchment before the graduation ceremony. Do not use the ceremony date as your only planning date.

Illustrative example, created for this guide: A student finishes a one-year master's and receives formal award confirmation before the ceremony. They should check their graduate application timing immediately. After receiving the first 12 months, they keep records of interviews and employment-agency registration. Having completed the master's does not remove the need to meet the conditions for the next permission.

If an offer comparison says “one-year course plus two-year stay,” add a separate row for each permission decision. That makes the uncertainty visible without dismissing the legitimate graduate route. The next question is whether your eventual position meets the employment-permit requirements.

Explain why this master's fits your goals

Use the study, work and residence comparison to compare countries beyond headline permit lengths. In your admissions SOP, connect the selected course to your actual preparation and intended professional skills.

You can get that statement reviewed through free graduate SOP review and the master's SOP rubric. Review supports the academic argument; it does not establish graduate-permission eligibility. More application advice is in the graduate school hub.
