Kinesiology Graduate School Personal Statement

A kinesiology graduate personal statement admits you to a subfield and a faculty member, not to kinesiology in general. Sacramento State asks for a one-page letter of intent that names two faculty you might study with. Michigan State asks for a two-page academic statement naming your preferred mentor, plus a separate two-page personal statement.

A statement that opens with a sports injury, says you love helping people move, and ends with physical therapy school reads as a statement for a different degree. The programs below ask which lab you would work in and what you want to study. This page shows what six programs publish, how to choose the subdiscipline first, how to handle a later physical therapy plan honestly, and a constructed one-page letter of intent. When you name faculty, a faculty naming check reads whether each name comes with a real reason.

Every program page quoted below was checked on October 30, 2026. Most state no cycle year, and Toronto's template is labelled 2024–2025, so recheck each one before you apply.

What six kinesiology programs ask the statement to do

ProgramStatementFaculty or mentor in the statementOther requirements on the page
Sacramento State MS KinesiologyLetter of intent, 1 pageName 2 facultyWriting sample; CSCS for strength and conditioning; fall admission only
Michigan State MS KinesiologyAcademic statement, 2 pages, plus personal statement, 2 pagesName preferred mentor(s)Resume or CV; three letters
Wisconsin–Madison MS Kinesiology"a statement of reasons for graduate study" (Biomechanics option)An advisor's agreement leads to the department's recommendationApply through one of 7 named options
Penn State KinesiologyBackground and professional goals statementList faculty you want to work withThe list is introduced as doctoral requirements; it also gives the master's letter count
University of Toronto KinesiologyStatement of interest, 500 words"Prospective Supervisor" fieldPick one of 3 research areas (2024–2025 template)
UT Arlington MS Exercise ScienceNot described on the pageNot required; research must be "compatible with" faculty programsThesis, manuscript or clinical internship route

The verbatim rules behind the first two rows:

Sacramento State: "a letter of intent (1-page statement of academic and professional goals and identification of 2 faculty members with whom you might like to study)"

Michigan State: "A two-page academic statement in which you describe your interest and aptitude in one or more concentrations offered in the doctoral program, state your research interests and specify the faculty member(s) that you prefer as your mentor(s)."

Michigan State's master's application page uses the words "doctoral program" in that sentence; we quote it as written. Its personal statement is a separate document: "Note that this is not the same as the “academic statement” above."

Wisconsin's biomechanics option states the advisor step: "If a professor in the area of interest agrees to serve as the prospective student's advisor, then the department's graduate office recommends the applicant for admission to the Graduate School."

Pick a subdiscipline before you write a word

Wisconsin makes this a rule: "Students apply to the Master of Science in Kinesiology through one of the named options". Its seven options are Applied Exercise Science, Motor Control and Behavior, Biomechanics, Exercise Psychology, Physical Activity Epidemiology, Exercise Physiology and Occupational Science. Michigan State's master's concentrations are Exercise Physiology, Cognitive and Motor Neuroscience, and Psychosocial Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity. Toronto's template asks you to pick Behavioural, Biophysical or Physical Cultural Studies.

SubdisciplineEvidence that reads as preparation (our recommendation)
Exercise physiologyLab testing you ran (VO2max, lactate, body composition), and a protocol decision you made
BiomechanicsMotion capture, force plates or EMG you collected or processed, and the analysis software
Motor control and learningA task or experiment design, how trials were scored, and what the data showed
Sport and exercise psychologySurvey or interview work, the measures you used, and how you handled responses
Strength and conditioningPrograms you wrote or tracked, athlete data, and certification status (Sac State requires CSCS for this option)
Physical activity epidemiologyAccelerometer or survey data, and any statistics you ran on it

If your evidence sits across two rows, choose the one that matches the faculty you will name. A statement that tries to cover physiology, biomechanics and psychology gives a single lab nothing to hold on to.

The physical therapy plan: say what the MS trains first

If you also plan to apply for a Doctor of Physical Therapy later, a statement written only around that plan reads as a request for a stepping stone.

Sacramento State describes what its MS offers, including "the opportunity to engage in scholarly activity, including creative and analytical thinking, interpreting, evaluating and translating peer-reviewed research, and designing and conducting original research". That is what the committee is admitting you to do.

Our view: lead with the lab, the question and what the MS will train you to do. Mention a later DPT plan only if it is true, in one sentence near the end, and connect it to what the MS adds. Do not write the MS as a way to repair a GPA for PT school.

The basis: five of the six programs in the table ask for research interests, goals or a named faculty member, and UT Arlington wants research compatible with its faculty. None asks why you want a clinical doctorate.

The countercase: some MS programs are built partly for clinical careers. UT Arlington lists, as one objective, to "Prepare students for employment in clinically oriented environments, associated with physical activity and rehabilitation such as cardiac rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, or sports medicine", and offers a final-semester clinical internship instead of a thesis. If that is your route, say so directly and name the internship setting you want. UT Arlington also notes that "All M.S. students are initially accepted on the non-thesis track."

If you are writing the DPT application itself, the PTCAS essay examples for 2026–2027 cover that document. If you are weighing an OT route instead, see occupational therapy master's vs doctorate.

A constructed weak and revised pair, written by us:

Weak: After tearing my ACL in high school, I discovered my passion for physical therapy. This master's degree will strengthen my application to DPT programs and help me reach my dream of becoming a physical therapist.

Revised: I want to study how knee-loading patterns change in the months after ACL reconstruction, using the motion capture and force plate work I started as an undergraduate. I may apply to DPT programs after the MS; if I do, I want to bring that research training with me.

Naming two faculty without name-dropping

Sacramento State requires two names. Penn State asks for "The name(s) of any faculty member(s) with whom applicants are interested in working". UT Arlington says your research area "needs to align to and be compatible with (but not necessarily exactly match) faculty research programs in the Department."

For each name, give one sentence on their current work and one on how it connects to your evidence or question. Two names with reasons beat five names with none. If you have emailed a professor, say what you discussed, not that they agreed to anything they did not. The guide to naming a professor in your SOP and the guide to emailing a professor before applying cover both steps.

Constructed example: one-page biomechanics letter of intent

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant statement. Context (invented): Jordan Lee, a kinesiology graduate applying to a one-page letter-of-intent program like Sacramento State's, naming two fictional faculty, Dr. M. Ortiz and Dr. K. Brandt. None of these people is real. The letter is 327 words.

I am applying to the MS in Kinesiology, Exercise Science concentration, to study how knee-loading patterns change during return to running after ACL reconstruction. My academic goal is to complete a thesis that measures those changes over time; my professional goal is a research role in a sports medicine clinic's motion analysis lab.

As an undergraduate research assistant in our biomechanics lab, I collected three-dimensional motion capture and force plate data from 18 recreational runners for a study on step rate. I placed markers, ran the capture sessions and wrote the processing scripts that filtered marker data and computed knee flexion angles and peak vertical ground reaction force. Halfway through, I noticed our knee angles jumped whenever a marker was briefly hidden. I added a gap-filling step and a rule to discard trials with gaps over a set length, and the lab now uses both. My capstone project compared knee loading at two step rates in six runners; with six participants, it could describe a pattern but not test it.

I would like to study with Dr. M. Ortiz, whose recent work tracks knee joint moments in athletes at three, six and nine months after reconstruction. My processing experience fits that kind of repeated-measures capture directly, and I have not yet worked with patient populations, which her lab does. I would also like to study with Dr. K. Brandt, whose work on wearable sensors for estimating ground reaction force outside the lab could make return-to-running testing possible at more time points than lab sessions allow.

My coursework included biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor learning and statistics, and I process data in MATLAB and Python. I have not yet run an inverse dynamics model from start to finish; I expect to learn it in my first year.

I may apply to physical therapy programs after the MS. If I do, I want to bring the ability to measure what changes in a patient's movement, not only to observe it.

Why it works: the subdiscipline and question are in the first sentence. The goals are both academic and professional, as Sacramento State asks. Each faculty name has a specific reason. The marker-gap story shows a decision. The DPT plan appears once, at the end, and connects to the training. The letter would fit on one page in 11–12 point type.

Questions about kinesiology personal statements

Is a kinesiology letter of intent the same as a personal statement?

At Sacramento State, the letter of intent is the main statement: one page of goals plus two faculty names. Michigan State asks for both an academic statement and a separate personal statement. Read your program's names for its documents and write to each one.

Do I have to name faculty in a kinesiology statement?

At Sacramento State, yes, two. Michigan State asks you to specify preferred mentors, Penn State asks for names, and Toronto's template has a prospective supervisor field. UT Arlington does not ask for names.

How long should a kinesiology graduate personal statement be?

It depends on the program: 1 page at Sacramento State, 2 pages each for Michigan State's two statements, 500 words for Toronto's statement of interest. Use the statement of purpose length guide where none is given.

Can I mention that I want to go to PT school?

Yes, if it is true. Put it in one sentence near the end and connect it to what the MS trains.

I do not have a kinesiology degree. What changes?

Check the prerequisites first. Sacramento State says applicants without a kinesiology degree "are required to successfully complete a minimum of 18-20 specified units in Kinesiology", with the list set by concentration.
