Late Letter of Recommendation for Medical School
A late letter keeps your med school file incomplete; none of six school pages we read says it counts against you. AACOMAS and TMDSAS rules, landing times.
Late Letter of Recommendation for Medical School
None of the six school pages we read says a late letter of recommendation counts against you. What a late letter does is hold your file at incomplete, and those schools review complete files. At a rolling school, the cost of a late letter is the days your file waits in the queue.
That changes the November decision. If a writer is two weeks late, send one reminder with the exact letter ID and a date, and keep the request open. Replace the writer only when a school's deadline is close and the missing letter is the type that school requires, or when your date passes with no reply.
Every page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. AAMC's AMCAS letter pages returned HTTP 403 to our scripted checks that day, so the AMCAS service rules (how AMCAS forwards late letters, how many entries you can add after you submit) are not verified here and are not stated as facts. The AACOMAS, TMDSAS, Interfolio and school rules below come from pages that loaded. For how many letters each service takes, see how many letters of recommendation for medical school.
The applicant sets the due date, not the service
The date your writer sees is a date you picked. Liaison, which runs the AACOMAS letter portal, tells writers: "This date is entered by the applicant, not the program or application service." (Liaison Letters Quick Start Guide) Its FAQ goes further: "If the due date has passed, submit your recommendation and contact the applicant to confirm deadline dates." (Liaison Letters FAQs)
Two more service rules shape what "late" means:
- AACOMAS does not chase letters for you. "It is your responsibility to ensure that evaluation requests are received and completed on time. We will not notify applicants about missing evaluations." (AACOMAS, Evaluations)
- TMDSAS processes letters separately from the application. "Letters are processed separately from applications. Therefore, LOE will not delay your application processing time." (TMDSAS, Letters of Evaluation)
So there is no service-side deadline for a writer in the AACOMAS or TMDSAS text. The deadlines that matter are the schools'.
What schools do with a file still waiting on a letter
| School (service) | What its page says | Deadline the page states |
|---|---|---|
| George Washington (AMCAS) | "Your file will be considered complete when all of the letters designated in the AMCAS System are marked as complete." | Secondary by "December 2nd" (no year stated) |
| UVM Larner (AMCAS) | "a completed application includes secondary application fee, registration for CASPer, letters of recommendation, and submission of the secondary." | Page shows a 2026-27 timeline |
| Campbell CUSOM (AACOMAS) | "Letters are accepted through AACOMAS, Interfolio, and mail at any time in the application process." The file goes to review once the "required letters of recommendation" and other items arrive. | Secondary by "March 15" (no year stated) |
| Midwestern AZCOM (AACOMAS) | "Applications will not be reviewed until all required application materials have been received by the Office of Admissions" | Letters by "March 1st" (2026-2027 catalog) |
| Midwestern CCOM (AACOMAS) | All materials, including "two required letters of recommendation", must arrive "on or before April 1st" | April 1st (2026-2027 catalog) |
| VCOM (AACOMAS) | Lists the physician letter and the committee or science letter among the items after which "your application is considered complete" | Not stated on this page |
None of the six says a late letter lowers an evaluation. All six tie review or completeness to the letters arriving. GW adds one rule that matters for anyone thinking about sending an extra letter later: "If you submit additional letters after your file is complete, they will be included in the review of your file ONLY if your file has not been reviewed."
Our view: at these schools a late letter costs queue time, not standing, so the fix is speed, not a new writer. The basis is the table: review starts when the file is complete. At a rolling school, a file completed on November 20 waits behind files completed in October.
The countercase: a writer who will not finish before a school's stated deadline is a different problem. AZCOM wants letters by March 1st and CCOM by April 1st. If the missing letter is the physician letter those schools require and your writer has stopped replying, add a second writer now rather than wait.
Adding or replacing a writer after you submitted
| Service | Add a letter after submitting? | Remove or replace one? |
|---|---|---|
| AACOMAS | Yes, under the cap. AACOMAS lists "Adding new evaluations (if you have not yet requested the maximum number of evaluations)" among the changes allowed after you submit (Updating Your Application), and "You can enter information for a maximum of 10 evaluations. If you want to submit more, send those additional evaluations directly to your programs." | Completed letters stay: "completed evaluations cannot be removed or replaced." To change an evaluator's email, "you must delete these requests and then re-add them with the correct email." |
| TMDSAS | Yes, to four: "You need a minimum of 3 letters and can have a maximum of 4 letters." The fourth is added by answering yes to "Do you intend to submit an optional letter?" | "You can exchange one evaluator for another UNLESS the letter has been marked received/approved within your application" |
| AMCAS | Not verified (AAMC page 403) | Not verified |
This is why adding beats swapping in AACOMAS. A backup writer can go into an open slot while the late request stays live. If the late letter then arrives, it stays in the file, which is fine: it is a letter you chose.
How long each route takes to land
A letter "submitted" today is not in a school's file today. These are the times each service or school publishes:
| Route | Time stated | Source |
|---|---|---|
| TMDSAS direct upload | "Allow up to 10 business days"; longer in "peak season May - July" | TMDSAS |
| TMDSAS Evaluation Form | "within 1 business day" | TMDSAS |
| Interfolio to TMDSAS | "Allow up to 14 business days" | TMDSAS |
| Interfolio to AMCAS | "typically take 3-5 business days to be attached to an application" | Interfolio |
| Interfolio to AACOMAS | "it then takes our team 1-4 business days to deliver" | Interfolio |
| WesternU COMP, after receipt | "Letters are typically posted to your file within 10 working days after receipt." | WesternU secondary instructions, Rev. 4/20/2026 |
| AAMC Letter Writer Application | Not verified (AAMC page 403) | — |
Two traps sit inside this table.
- The Interfolio re-dating rule at TMDSAS. TMDSAS warns: "If you have sent your letters in multiple deliveries, Interfolio moves your submission date for ALL submitted letters to the latest delivery date!" Its own example: three letters sent on 6/1 and a fourth on 6/8 make "your new submission date for all letters is now 6/8." A late fourth letter through Interfolio re-dates the three that were on time.
- Service time stacks on school time. Our arithmetic: an Interfolio letter to TMDSAS can take up to 14 business days, which is close to three calendar weeks, before any school posts it. The date to give a late writer is the school's deadline minus that time.
Wait, nudge or replace: run this in order
- Name the missing entry. Open your service status page and write down which letter is still requested or accepted, and its route. Pass: you can name the writer, the route and the ID.
- Check whether a school requires that type. A physician letter is required at 13 of the 22 osteopathic schools in our DO letter of recommendation requirements table, and GW requires a science faculty letter when you have no committee letter. Pass: you know whether any school on your list is waiting on this specific letter.
- Send one reminder with the ID, the route and a date seven days out (example below). Pass: the writer replies with a date.
- If no reply by your date and a required letter is missing, add a writer in an open slot (AACOMAS up to 10, the TMDSAS fourth letter). Keep the original request open.
- Do not switch the writer's route mid-cycle to Interfolio for TMDSAS unless every letter goes in one delivery, because of the re-dating rule.
- When it lands, check each school's portal, not only the service. UVM tells applicants: "There is a temporary delay between the time you submit your secondary and the letters being marked as complete."
Constructed example: the reminder email to a late writer
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. Context (invented): the applicant is Saoirse Malone; the writer is Dr. L. Thorsen, her research supervisor; the letter goes to AACOMAS through Liaison Letters.
Subject: Letter of evaluation for Saoirse Malone, AACOMAS
Dear Dr. Thorsen, thank you again for agreeing to write my letter for osteopathic medical school. Two of my schools mark my file incomplete until it arrives, so it is the one item holding my file. The request came from support@aacomas.myliaison.com on September 3 and is on your Liaison Letters Requests page; if you cannot find it, I can resend it today. Could you upload it by Monday, November 16, or tell me if a later date works better?
The body is 79 words in four sentences. It names the route and the sender address the writer should search for (the address AACOMAS's help page gives), states the status of the file, and gives a date. It does not apologize for asking or restate why the letter matters. If the writer started a draft, Liaison's FAQ says "you can find it under the Accepted status filter on the dashboard."
Questions about late letters
Is it too late to submit a letter of recommendation to AMCAS in November?
We could not verify AAMC's forwarding rule; its page returned 403. The school pages we read accept letters until their own deadlines, and GW counts a file complete when the designated AMCAS letters are complete. Get the letter in as early as you can, not by a service cut-off.
Does a late letter of recommendation hurt a medical school application?
None of the six school pages above says so. They say the file is incomplete, or not reviewed, until required letters arrive. At a rolling school that means a later review date.
Can I add a letter of recommendation after AACOMAS is submitted?
Yes. AACOMAS lets you add new evaluations after you submit until you reach 10. Beyond 10, AACOMAS says to "send those additional evaluations directly to your programs." Completed evaluations cannot be removed.
Should I submit secondaries while a letter is still missing?
Yes. The secondary and the letter are separate items, and both count toward completeness at the schools above. Holding a secondary for a letter only adds a second missing item.
My writer says the letter is uploaded but my status says pending. What now?
Allow the processing time in the table, then check the service and the school portal separately. If the writer cannot find the request at all, see recommender didn't get the recommendation link. If you are the writer, the AMCAS letter writer portal guide covers IDs and upload format. For the bigger picture on who to ask, read the medical school letters of recommendation strategy guide; more letter guides are in the medical school essays hub.
Review the writing you send next
If your writer is still drafting, send them the free review of the letter: it reads whether the letter states the writer's relationship to you, uses observed examples and ends in a clear assessment. When the letter lands and you have news for a school, get a free Quick Review of your update letter before you send it. For DO schools, the AACOMAS evaluation rules cap the application at 10 evaluations and send extras directly to programs.
A new letter from a new writer is a different case; see extra letter of recommendation after an interview for which schools take one.
A late Texas writer can ask the applicant to switch to the TMDSAS Evaluation Form, which posts within one business day.
