Changed Jobs After Applying for Your MBA?

Report a significant job change or promotion through the MBA program's permitted update channel. Keep the submission factual and specific. An update can maintain an accurate file, but it does not guarantee another review or restart the admissions process.

Two schools permit updates with an important limit

Stanford allows applicants to report important, relevant changes through the Upload Materials section of the application-status portal. It does not guarantee that information submitted after the deadline will be reviewed. Stanford MBA application instructions.

Tuck similarly permits significant changes through the application-status page. Its examples include updated résumés and job updates. The material is automatically added to the application, but consideration after the deadline is not guaranteed. Tuck admissions FAQ.

Those distinctions matter: successful upload establishes that you submitted information. It does not establish that the committee has read it, reopened a completed evaluation or changed its decision timeline.

Decide what actually changed

Classify the proposed update before writing:

1. A correction needed to keep the file accurate: An incorrect employment date or changed contact detail needs the appropriate correction process. Follow the school's instructions rather than assuming every field can be replaced by a new résumé.
2. A material new event: A promotion, new employer or substantial change in responsibilities can add information the committee did not have at submission.
3. A different presentation of the same facts: Revised formatting or a more polished description usually does not create new information. Our recommendation is to avoid sending another document merely because you prefer its wording.

For a material event, make a private fact sheet: effective date, former role, new role, responsibilities that actually changed and any relevant correction to the submitted record. Distinguish an accepted offer from employment already begun. Do not describe future responsibilities as completed achievements.

Use the designated portal field or permitted channel. Keep a copy and submission confirmation. If the portal does not provide the option described, ask admissions how to submit the factual change rather than sending repeated copies through multiple channels.

An illustrative promotion after Round 1

Imagine an applicant who submitted as a project analyst and is subsequently promoted to team lead. The new role includes responsibility for assigning work and supervising two colleagues.

That is a concrete change: the applicant can state its effective date, updated title and new responsibility. If the school allows an updated résumé, it can reflect those facts. There is no need to attach another essay arguing that the promotion proves the applicant deserves admission.

Now change the scenario. The applicant has the same job and responsibilities but rewrites every résumé bullet to sound stronger. That is primarily a presentation change. It does not satisfy the same rationale for a significant factual update.

If an offer is accepted but the start date is next month, report the status precisely where updates are permitted. “Accepted an offer to begin” and “started work” describe different facts, even if both are relevant.
