Mistakes We Flag
- Turning your essay into a résumé timeline
- Listing employers, duties, or promotions does not show the choices that shaped your direction. Explain what you chose, why you chose it, and how it changed your path.
- Treating the MBA as the answer by itself
- Saying the degree will unlock your goal is not enough. Identify what you need to learn, practice, test, or change now and why that need has become timely.
- Making a vague promise to contribute
- “I will add value” does not show what fellow students would receive. Name the peers or setting, what you would do, and how it could affect their learning.
- Naming a lesson without showing change
- A statement such as “I learned resilience” needs interpretation. Show the assumption or behavior you reconsidered and what you now understand or do differently.
- Connecting career goals and community only through school praise
- Your contribution should grow from your own experiences, values, or practices. Avoid using praise for Kellogg as the only link between what you want to gain and what you will give peers.
