What We Check

1
Reflection on Development

Whether, when the supplied current prompt asks for reflection, personal or professional growth, or how the applicant has strengthened their candidacy…

2
Actions and Evidence Since the Prior Application

Whether the draft presents actions or changes since the prior application and states evidence about what those actions or changes involved or produced.

3
Updated Relevance to Goals or School

Whether, when the supplied current prompt requests goals, school understanding, school fit, commitment, or a related updated case, the draft connects the applicant’s stated development to that requested relevance.

Mistakes We Flag

Guessing why you were not admitted before
Do not present an admissions decision rationale as fact. Focus instead on your own understanding of what you have developed or on concrete changes you have made.
Calling yourself stronger without explaining how
A statement such as “I became a stronger leader” needs substance. Explain your earlier approach or capability and what is now different in your judgment, actions, or contribution.
Listing updates without detail
Promotions, classes, and volunteer work need context. Show what you did, what responsibility you took on, what resulted, or what the experience demonstrated.
Treating future plans as completed progress
Planned steps are not the same as evidence of change. Separate what you intend to do from actions, responsibilities, or results that have already occurred.
Using a school name or goal as the whole connection
If the prompt asks about school fit or goals, explain the connection. Show how an update informed, tested, sharpened, or prepared you for that goal or school understanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to explain why my earlier application was unsuccessful?

No. The essay does not require you to diagnose a prior admissions decision or explain a rejection.

What kinds of updates can I discuss?

No particular type of change is required. Discuss changes since your prior application and give concrete detail about what they involved or produced.

Do I need to include goals or school fit?

Only if the current prompt explicitly asks for goals, school understanding, fit, commitment, contribution, or a related connection. An updates-only prompt does not require this.

How long should my response be?

Follow any word or character limit in the current prompt. If no numeric limit is provided, this rubric does not set one.
