MCAT Date vs Med School Application Timing
TMDSAS urges an MCAT by May of the year you apply; Bates wants the test done by February for its committee. What each test month does to your file.
MCAT Date vs Med School Application Timing
Take the MCAT by May of the year you apply if you can. TMDSAS "strongly encourage[s] taking the MCAT by May prior to applying" so your file is complete for interview season, and UTMB states "No application is reviewed without an MCAT score." TMDSAS still lets you submit the primary before your score arrives.
Do not hold the whole application for the score. TMDSAS processes your application without it; schools such as UTMB wait for it. So a late-spring tester should submit the primary on time with the planned test date listed, release the score the day it posts, and have secondaries ready. What decides your file date is when the score reaches the school, not when you submit.
Every TMDSAS, school and college page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. AAMC's 2027 MCAT calendar, score release dates and AMCAS score rules refused automated retrieval that day, so this page gives no AAMC test or release dates. Read them on AAMC's U.S. MCAT calendar before you register.
What the services and schools say about MCAT timing
| Source | Rule, quoted | What it means for your test month |
|---|---|---|
| TMDSAS Test Scores | "We strongly encourage taking the MCAT by May prior to applying so that your application will be completed and in the applicant pool for the start of the interview season in August." | May is TMDSAS's own target |
| TMDSAS Test Scores | "You can submit your application before TMDSAS has received your test scores." | Submit on time; do not wait |
| TMDSAS Test Scores | "The last MCAT test date accepted and that will be considered for the EY 2027 cycle is September 12." | A September test is the last chance, not a plan |
| UTMB John Sealy | "It is advisable that you take the MCAT during the spring before you plan to submit your application …" and "No application is reviewed without an MCAT score." | Spring test; no review until the score lands |
| Bates committee | Applicants "must complete their standardized test by February (preferably earlier) in order to remain eligible for a Committee Interview (early-March through mid-April) given the one-month test score processing delay." | February at the latest if your committee works like Bates |
| UTSA Health Professions (Fall 2027 entry guide) | Minimum "MCAT score 500" for a committee letter; "practice exam scores will be accepted as a placeholder"; "Official scores are required for all committee letter prior to application service(s) submissions." | A spring test can still get a committee letter, but the official score must exist before you submit |
The UTSA row is from last cycle's guide; UTSA had not posted a Fall 2028 guide on November 7, 2026.
Can you submit your application before your MCAT score?
For TMDSAS, yes, in its words: "You can submit your application before TMDSAS has received your test scores. Your scores will be added to your application as they are received and they will not cause a delay to your application processing time."
For AMCAS and AACOMAS, we could not retrieve the services' own wording on November 7, 2026, so check the AMCAS instructions and the AACOMAS help pages before you rely on it. Bates says letters need not be uploaded for an application to be submitted or "verified"; it says nothing about scores.
The catch is in the mechanics. TMDSAS asks you to "List all dates that you have previously taken the MCAT AND all dates that you plan to take it", and it warns: "Entering your MCAT information into the application will NOT release your scores to TMDSAS." You release them through AAMC's score reporting system, and "TMDSAS will receive your scores 36 hours from the time you request the release." List the planned date, then release the score the day it appears.
Schools then decide when your file counts. Houston's Fertitta College of Medicine, on the TMDSAS page: "Applications will be considered complete and ready for further review once all MCAT scores and letters of recommendation are received along with the completed secondary application."
January vs spring vs summer: the trade each month makes
The "score in hand" column is our arithmetic: test month plus Bates's "one-month test score processing delay", not AAMC's published release dates, which we could not verify. Swap in the exact release date from AAMC's calendar when you register.
| Test month (2027) | Score in hand by about | Committee interview (Bates-style, March–April) | Room to retest in the same cycle | Collision with personal statement drafting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | February | Yes | Yes, in spring | Low, if draft 3 is done in December |
| March–April | April–May | Only if the committee accepts a late score | Tight | High: study runs February–April |
| May | June | No | Only a summer retest, which lands late | High through spring |
| June–September | July–October | No | No | Low, but secondaries collide instead |
Our view: January is the best month for a committee applicant who is ready, and May is the latest month that keeps you in TMDSAS's "start of the interview season in August" window. A June-or-later test is a plan only if you accept that schools will review you after the score lands.
The countercase: a January test you are not ready for is worse than a May test you are. A score you need to retake costs more time than a late first score. Our MCAT retake decision framework covers that call.
The late-spring tester's procedure
If you test in May 2027 and apply in June 2027:
- Finish the personal statement before dedicated study starts (see when to start your personal statement).
- Enter the application the week it opens; list your planned test date in the MCAT section.
- Submit the primary on time. Do not hold it for the score.
- Pre-write secondaries during the score wait, not before your test.
- Release the score to every service the day it appears.
- Check each school's portal until it shows your file as complete.
Should you write the personal statement while studying?
No new drafts. Writing and full-time study compete for the same hours. Finish draft 3 before your study block, make short edit passes during it, and do the final cut after the test.
If your test is in January, that means drafting in November and December. If it is in May, drafting is January to mid-February, then edits only.
Apply now or wait a cycle
Use dates, not feelings:
- Score expected by June: apply this cycle.
- Score expected July–August: apply this cycle if your schools' deadlines are still ahead of the score, knowing your file completes late at every school that waits for it.
- Score expected after the TMDSAS-style last accepted test date: you are not in this cycle for those schools.
- You need a retake you have not scheduled: wait, and read our gap year guide for what that year can hold.
Every application also has a cost: our cross-system application budget guide prices each service and test. For how long verification and processing take once you submit, see AMCAS verification timing. TMDSAS's own figure: "Applications are usually processed within 4 weeks. During peak periods, processing may take up to 6 weeks."
A January tester and a May tester
Constructed examples, written by us, not real applicants.
Context (invented): Delphine Sorel has a Bates-style committee. She tests on a January 2027 date, has her score in February, interviews with the committee in March, and submits in late May with nothing pending. Her personal statement was drafted in November and December 2026.
Context (invented): Owen Hartley has no committee and works full time. He tests in May 2027, submits his TMDSAS application in mid-May with the test date listed, releases his score the day it appears in June, and spends the wait pre-writing secondaries. His file completes later than Delphine's; his primary does not.
Questions about MCAT timing
Can I submit AMCAS before my MCAT score?
We could not retrieve AAMC's wording on November 7, 2026, so read the MCAT section of the AMCAS instructions. TMDSAS states you can submit before it receives your scores, and they are added as they arrive.
Is it too late to take the MCAT in May and apply in June?
No. TMDSAS names May as its target month. Submit in June with the test date listed and release the score when it posts.
Is a January or April MCAT better?
January, if you are ready: it fits a spring committee interview and leaves retest room. April, if you need the extra months to be ready. Readiness beats the calendar.
When are 2027 MCAT scores released?
We could not verify the 2027 calendar from AAMC on November 7, 2026. Check AAMC's U.S. MCAT calendar; Bates describes the wait as about a month.
How old can my MCAT score be?
TMDSAS: "MCAT scores can be no more than five years old from your planned start date." It also notes "Baylor College of Medicine has a three-year cut-off for MCAT scores". Check each school's own page.
