Premed Committee Letter Deadlines: A Calendar
Committee deadlines for fall 2028 entry start in November 2026. Dated steps from five colleges' own pages, what each asks for, and the no-committee route.
Premed Committee Letter Deadlines: A Calendar
For fall 2028 entry, premed committee deadlines start in November 2026: Middlebury's readiness self-assessment is "due Nov 15th", SIU's interest form is due "by December 1, 2026", and Bates's registration form is "Due January 15". All of them come months before any application service opens in May 2027.
So a junior who plans around the AMCAS opening date has already missed the first step. The committee calendar is your real application calendar, and at Bates its hardest date is the personal statement draft, not the letters: a polished statement is due February 15; when it is ready, the AMCAS personal statement rubric reads it the way a committee will.
Every college and TMDSAS page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. Committee pages change each fall, and two of these colleges say details are still coming, so recheck your own office's page this month. AAMC's AMCAS letter pages refused automated retrieval that day and are not quoted. For what a committee letter is and who needs one, see our committee letter explainer; this page owns the dates.
The committee calendar, phase by phase
Six phases recur across the five colleges below. Each row names the colleges whose pages show that phase, out of five.
| Phase | Months (2028 cycle) | Dated examples | Colleges showing it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Interest or readiness check | November–December 2026 | Middlebury self-assessment "due Nov 15th"; SIU interest form "by December 1, 2026"; UConn modules "in late November 2026" | 3 of 5 |
| 2. Registration | December 2026–January 2027 | Middlebury "due Dec 15th"; Bates "Due January 15" | 2 of 5 |
| 3. Portfolio, CV and personal statement | January–April 2027 | Bates CV "Due February 1", statement "Due February 15"; UConn portfolio January 1 to June 1, 2027 | 2 of 5 |
| 4. Letters to the office | March–August 2027 | Bates "Due March 1"; Middlebury "Matric 2028 Letter Writers - due April 15th"; UConn packet closes "August 1st, 2027" | 3 of 5 |
| 5. Committee interview or coaching | March–July | Bates "Early March – Mid April"; UConn coaching session "before application systems open in May"; UTSA "April – July" (Fall 2027 entry guide) | 3 of 5 |
| 6. Letter or packet sent | June–August 2027 | Bates letters "finalized and ready for submission by July 1st"; UConn packets "on a rolling basis" | 2 of 5 |
SIU's page says its process for the 2028 entry cycle is being updated, so it appears only in phase 1 for now.
Our view: your committee's personal statement date is the deadline to build around. Letters can trail, and the services do not wait for them: TMDSAS says "You can submit your application before TMDSAS has received your letters of evaluation", and Bates says reference letters "do not need to be uploaded in order for applicants to submit their professional school application, or for their application to be verified." A missing polished statement in February, by contrast, can cost you the committee interview.
The countercase: at a letter-packet office like UConn's, which writes "a non-evaluative cover letter" and has no committee interview, the binding date is the letter packet, and a strong statement can come later in spring. Read which kind of office yours is before you decide which date binds.
Five college calendars side by side
| College (cycle label it uses) | Step | Date as the page states it |
|---|---|---|
| Middlebury ("Matric 2028") | Readiness Self-Assessment | "due Nov 15th" (no year stated) |
| Committee Registration Form | "due Dec 15th", available after review of the self-assessment | |
| Letter writers | "Matric 2028 Letter Writers - due April 15th" | |
| Bates ("2028 matriculation") | Mock interview | "October – January" |
| Registration Form and photo | "Due January 15" | |
| Self-Assessment and CV | "Due February 1" | |
| Polished personal statement and transcripts | "Due February 15" | |
| Individual letters | "Due March 1" | |
| Committee interview | "Early March – Mid April" | |
| SIU ("2027 - 2028 Cycle Update") | Interest form | "by December 1, 2026" |
| UConn ("2028 application cycle") | Orientation modules and readiness survey | "late November 2026" |
| Health Professions Applicant Portfolio | opens "January 1, 2027", closes "June 1, 2027", "recommended submission by April 1st" | |
| Letter requests | "Suggested that applicants begin asking for letters of recommendation in January, February, and March" | |
| Letter packet | closes "August 1st, 2027"; dental applicants asked to submit "by May 1, 2027" | |
| UTSA ("Admission Cycle: Fall 2027", last cycle) | Intent to Apply, committee letter | "Deadline March 06, 2026" |
| Committee interviews | "April – July" | |
| Intent to Apply, letter collection only | "Deadline August 26, 2026" |
The UTSA row is last cycle's guide: a Fall 2028 guide was not posted on November 7, 2026. Read it as the shape of UTSA's calendar, a spring intent deadline and summer interviews, which is later than the New England colleges'. The same PDF also prints "no later than September 1, 2025" for letter collection, so its dates were still being updated.
Committee letter, letter packet or individual letters
What each office produces decides how much of your file it controls.
- Committee letter. Bates's committee "offers an assessment of an applicant's candidacy" and rates each candidate with "one of the following four rankings: Not Recommended, Recommended, Highly Recommended, or Exceptional." Bates adds: "Applicants will not be informed of their evaluation ranking."
- Letter packet. UConn's office offers "a Letter Packet , which includes a non-evaluative cover letter." It also says: "We are only able to submit one packet, we cannot make multiple versions."
- Letter collection. UTSA's office "may collect and manage individual letters for students to be used in support of their application to medica [sic] or dental school without needing a Committee Letter of Evaluation."
TMDSAS accepts all three. It defines committee packets in "three basic formats": a "Committee letter with supporting letters attached", a "Committee letter that is composed and uses quotes from various evaluators", and a "Collection of individual evaluation letters which may also include a cover letter from an advising office or school letter service". Its rule: "All three types of HP Committee Packets are acceptable to TMDSAS". For medical applicants the choice is three individual letters or "One Health Professions Committee Letter or Packet", each with the "Option to submit one additional letter (or Evaluation Form)".
One TMDSAS step catches committee applicants: "You must release your application to your health professions advisory" by answering yes in the Colleges Attended section, and "Unlike individual letters, automatic email notifications are not sent out to advisors regarding HP Packets." Tell your office yourself.
PA applicants differ: UConn notes "CASPA, the application service for PA schools, does not accept letter packets". AMCAS's own letter-type rules were not retrievable on November 7, 2026; read them in the AMCAS instructions.
Alumni, gap-year and post-bacc applicants
| College | Who is eligible, quoted |
|---|---|
| Middlebury | "Middlebury College students and alumni are eligible"; post-bacc completers "will likely want to receive endorsement from that institution" |
| Bates | the committee "advocates for Bates students and alumni"; separate rules for returning, continuing and re-applicants |
| UConn | "current UConn undergraduate students or UConn alumni"; "We cannot support students/applicants who have not completed a degree ... at UConn or who are not currently completing a degree (e.g. non-degree students)" |
| UTSA | committee letter for "A degree-seeking student attending UTSA or considered a UTSA alumni"; letter collection also open to "enrolled post-bacc (non-degree) students" |
UTSA also sets bars for its committee letter: "a minimum 3.25 cumulative UTSA GPA" and "Min MCAT score 500", with "practice exam scores ... accepted as a placeholder for official MCAT and DAT scores."
If you graduated and work now, email your office in November, not May. Bates's re-applicant rule shows why: "The Medical Studies Committee will not update a Re-Applicant's original Committee Letter, nor will we accept updated or additional/new individual letters". The rules for a second try are set before your first.
SIU's page states a view about how schools treat committee letters: "This preference is so strong that some schools will not consider applicants without a committee letter if their undergraduate institution offers them." That is SIU's statement, not a rule from any application service. Our committee letter explainer covers what schools publish on it.
If your school has no committee
You apply with individual letters, and the calendar is yours to set. Ask writers in January to March, the window UConn suggests, so letters arrive while you submit. TMDSAS needs three individual letters plus an optional fourth, and its direct uploads take "Up to 10 business days" and Interfolio "Up to 14 business days". For how many letters to collect and from whom, see how many letters of recommendation for medical school and our letters of recommendation strategy guide. Applying years after graduation, read letters of recommendation after graduating; with no advisor at all, read applying without a premed advisor.
The committee interview
Bates requires a mock interview "between early-October and late-January" before the real one, and Middlebury's page links sample medical school interview questions. At Bates your registration form, CV and polished statement are due before the interview, so expect questions that test whether you can talk about what you wrote.
Constructed example, written by us, not a real committee's question set. Five questions and what each probes:
- "Walk us through the experience in your personal statement that you would cut first." Probes whether you know which parts carry the essay.
- "Your CV lists two clinical roles. What did the second teach you that the first did not?" Probes reflection beyond the list.
- "What would you do this year if you are not admitted?" Probes a real plan, and whether you know your weak spots.
- "Tell us about a time you disagreed with someone senior to you." Probes judgment and how you handle hierarchy.
- "Why apply this cycle and not next?" Probes readiness, the question the committee is there to answer.
Prepare by answering each in two minutes, out loud, using only material from your own registration form and statement.
What to do this month
- Find your office's page and its 2028-cycle label (Matric 2028, 2027–2028, Entry Year 2028).
- Write down its first deadline. At three of the five colleges above it falls in November or December 2026.
- Decide which kind of office it is: committee letter, letter packet or letter collection.
- Start the personal statement over winter break; our guide to when to start your personal statement gives the draft calendar.
- List three to five letter writers and ask in January.
- Put the service dates on the same calendar once they post: our 2028-cycle application timeline tracks what is published.
Questions about committee letter deadlines
When is the premed committee letter deadline?
It depends on your college, and the first step comes early. For fall 2028 entry, Middlebury's self-assessment is due Nov 15, SIU's interest form by December 1, 2026, and Bates's registration by January 15.
When is the personal statement draft due to the committee?
At Bates, a polished draft is "Due February 15". UConn's portfolio, which asks about your motivation, is recommended by April 1, 2027. At Bates it is the earliest writing deadline on the calendar.
Can I get a committee letter as an alumnus or in a gap year?
At Middlebury, Bates, UConn and UTSA, alumni are eligible. UConn excludes students who have not completed and are not completing a UConn degree. Ask your office in November.
What if my school doesn't offer a committee letter?
Apply with individual letters. TMDSAS takes three plus an optional fourth. Your deadlines are then the dates you set with your writers.
Do I have to wait for my committee letter to submit?
No. TMDSAS and Bates both say letters are not needed to submit, and Bates adds they are not needed for verification. Submit when the application is ready; the letter follows. Alumni and post-bacc applicants: the non-traditional med school application timeline shows when to start the committee process while working.
Get a free review of your personal statement
Your committee reads the personal statement draft first; at Bates it is due February 15. Get a free Quick Review of your personal statement against GradPilot's AMCAS personal statement rubric before the committee's due date, so the draft it reads already shows what you did in your clinical and service work and what it taught you. Your letter writers can check their own letters against the medical school letter of evaluation rubric.
