Med School Letters After a Gap Year or Career Change

If you have graduated, ask your professors now and have the letter dated inside the cycle you apply in. For Entry Year 2027, TMDSAS stated "a strong preference for letters written after May 1, 2025", a year before submission opened; Utah's medical school recommends letters "dated within a year of application", and AACOMAS letters do not carry over to a new cycle.

"Ask early" is half right. Ask early so the professor still remembers you. But a letter written two cycles before you apply falls outside the preference at schools that publish one, and it cannot be reused in AACOMAS. The fix is to separate the ask from the letter: secure the yes and the memory now, and time the letter to the cycle. While you wait, the document you control is your own statement; the nontraditional personal statement rubric reads career-change essays.

Every TMDSAS, AACOMAS and school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. AAMC pages, including the AMCAS Letter Service instructions, refused automated retrieval that day (HTTP 403), so this page does not describe how AMCAS stores or delivers letters. Read the official AMCAS letters of evaluation section before you create letter entries.

The date rules that decide when a letter is written

SourceRule (verbatim)What it means after graduation
TMDSAS (Entry Year 2027)"Admissions committees will take the date of the letter into consideration during review, with a strong preference for letters written after May 1, 2025."For EY2027, whose submissions opened May 15, 2026, that meant letters from May 2025 on. EY2028 has not been posted
Utah Spencer Fox Eccles SOM (2026-2027 cycle)"Letters are recommended to be dated within a year of application."A letter from three years ago misses the recommendation
AACOMAS (2026-2027 reapplication rules)Letters of Evaluation are listed under "Application data that you cannot copy forward"Each AACOMAS cycle needs its letters requested again
AACOMAS"Many programs have strict guidelines and completed evaluations cannot be removed or replaced."Pick writers before you send requests, not after
AMCAS Letter ServiceNot retrieved (HTTP 403)Not verified on this page

Our arithmetic, assuming TMDSAS moves its date forward one year for EY2028: a letter written between May 2026 and your 2027 submission fits the TMDSAS preference, and a letter written after June 2026 is within a year of a June 2027 Utah application. A letter written now, in November 2026, fits both if you apply in 2027. It fits neither if you apply in 2029.

Ask now, collect in the cycle

Our view: if you will apply in the next cycle, ask now and let the professor write while the course is fresh. If you will apply two or more cycles from now, ask now for a yes and a meeting, give the professor your materials, and request the letter in the winter before you apply.

The basis is the table above. Schools that state a date want recent letters. AACOMAS does not carry letters forward. And TMDSAS says "You can submit your application before TMDSAS has received your letters of evaluation", so a letter arriving in June does not hold up submission there.

The countercase: a professor who is retiring, moving abroad or leaving academia may not be reachable in two years. Ask that professor to write now and keep the letter, or to store it in a letter service your schools accept. A dated letter is better than no letter from the one science professor who knew your work. The second exception: if your college's committee or letter packet service has its own calendar, its deadlines control the timing, not this rule.

Asking a professor two or more years later

A professor who taught you years ago needs evidence, not a reminder of your name. Send one email with everything attached, and offer a short call.

Constructed example: the request email

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant email. Context (invented): Mira Bastien took Cell Biology in fall 2023, graduated in 2024, and is applying in June 2027. 179 words.

Subject: Letter request from a former BIOL 340 student (Fall 2023)

Dear Dr. Iwu,

I took your Cell Biology course in fall 2023 and wrote the term paper on autophagy in yeast that you asked me to present in the last week of class. I graduated in 2024 and have worked since then as a clinical research coordinator at a cardiology practice.

I am applying to medical school in June 2027. Would you be willing to write a letter of evaluation for me? I would need it by mid-June 2027. If you can write it now, while the course is easier to recall, I can send the request form when the application opens.

I have attached my transcript line for your course, the paper, a one-page summary of what I have done since graduating, and my current personal statement draft. I would be glad to meet by video for fifteen minutes if that helps.

If you do not remember me well enough to write a detailed letter, please tell me. I would rather know now.

Thank you, Mira Bastien

Why it works: the first sentence gives the professor a specific piece of work to remember. The second paragraph gives a date and asks the yes-or-no question plainly. The last paragraph gives the professor an easy way to decline, which is better for you than a short, generic letter.

The one-page reminder sheet

Attach a page with: the course, term and grade; the work you did that the professor saw (a paper, a lab, office-hours questions); what you have done since graduating, in three lines; which schools or systems you plan to use; and the deadline. Facts only. Do not attach suggested wording for the letter. AACOMAS says evaluations "cannot be completed or submitted by the applicant or another party on behalf of the evaluator."

When the professor does not remember you

Take the answer. Then choose one:

  1. Ask a different professor whose course included work they saw directly: a lab, a seminar, a thesis.
  2. Ask for a short meeting first. If the conversation does not bring back specifics, do not push for the letter.
  3. Look for a post-bacc or graduate course instructor who taught you more recently (next section).

Who replaces a professor you cannot reach

TMDSAS recommends "that at least one of your evaluators be a current/former professor who can speak to your academic ability in the sciences." Its list of evaluator relationships includes "Current/Former Professor, Immediate Work/Volunteer Supervisor, Business Associate, Research PI". AACOMAS tells you to "determine whether your programs have specific requirements regarding evaluator roles or relationships before listing evaluators." Utah requires "a minimum of three (3) letters" and accepts individual letters, packets and committee letters.

So the replacement order is:

  1. A recent science instructor: post-bacc, community college or graduate courses count as professors.
  2. A research PI, if you did research after graduating.
  3. A clinical or work supervisor who saw your work directly. See medical school letters from an employer or scribe supervisor.

Check each school's own requirement before you settle the list. Who can write a medical school letter of recommendation covers writer types in detail, and how many letters of recommendation for medical school covers counts.

Committee letters and packets after you graduate

Your college may still serve you as an alumnus, but not always, and post-bacc students may be told to go elsewhere.

  • Middlebury College: "Middlebury College students and alumni are eligible to go through the committee process." But "Those who have completed post baccalaureate programs will likely want to receive endorsement from that institution as it will most accurately represent their medical school candidacy." Its process "begins in the fall preceding the summer in which your application is initiated," and its page lists "Matric 2028 Letter Writers - due April 15th".
  • UConn: its 2028-cycle letter packet is for "current UConn undergraduate students or UConn alumni." It adds: "We cannot support students/applicants who have not completed a degree (bachelor's, master's, or doctorate) at UConn or who are not currently completing a degree (e.g. non-degree students)." UConn suggests asking for letters in "January, February, and March" and closes letter packet submissions on August 1, 2027.

Our recommendation: email your college's prehealth office in November or December, a year and a half before you plan to start medical school, and ask three things: whether alumni are served, the deadline for the cycle you will apply in, and whether a post-bacc changes that. UConn's office "strongly encourage[s] recent graduates and alumni to set up the Alumni Forwarding Service", so ask about that too. If the office does not serve you, individual letters are a standard route: TMDSAS accepts "Three individual letters of evaluation or evaluation forms" as an alternative to a committee packet. The premed committee letter deadlines calendar collects committee dates.

Timeline for a gap-year applicant applying in 2027

Our recommended plan, built on the rules above:

WhenStep
November to December 2026Ask your prehealth office about alumni service. List writers. Send request emails to professors
January to March 2027Meet any writer who asked to talk. Confirm yeses. Send each the reminder sheet
April to May 2027Confirm deadlines with each writer. Send formal requests when each system lets you create letter entries
June 2027Submit. In TMDSAS, letters can arrive after you submit
Summer 2027Track each letter's status. AACOMAS: "We will not notify applicants about missing evaluations."

Questions about letters after graduating

Can a professor write my letter now if I apply in two years?

They can, but schools that state a date preference want recent letters: for Entry Year 2027 TMDSAS stated "a strong preference for letters written after May 1, 2025", and Utah recommends letters dated within a year of application. Ask now for a yes and give them your materials; request the letter in the winter before you apply.

Do letters carry over if I reapply?

Not in AACOMAS: letters are listed as data you cannot copy forward. For TMDSAS, the date preference still applies to an older letter. AMCAS rules were not verified here. The reapplying medical school letters of recommendation page covers reapplicants.

Can my old college's committee still write for me?

Some committees serve alumni, such as Middlebury's. UConn's packet requires a UConn degree. Ask your own office for its cycle deadline.

Do I need a committee letter?

No. TMDSAS accepts three individual letters as an alternative to a committee packet. AACOMAS takes committee letters or individual evaluations, up to 10 entries, with a committee letter counting as one.
