Can a Medical School Rescind Your Acceptance?

Yes. Medical school acceptances are conditional, and schools publish the conditions. Across the 10 policies below, the grounds are background-check problems, unreported charges or failing grades, missed deadlines and traffic-rule breaches. Several set a reporting clock: five working days at West Virginia, 72 hours at USC Keck.

Keck's policy shows the pattern: the problem itself is not automatically disqualifying, but silence is. Keck says "No information obtained by Keck from a criminal background check will automatically disqualify a conditionally accepted applicant from obtaining full admission", and in the next sentence that an omission "will result in rescission of conditional acceptance." The letter that protects your seat is a prompt, factual disclosure to the office the policy names.

Every policy quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. Rescission for AI-written application text is covered separately in medical school application AI policies.

What schools list as grounds for rescinding

SchoolGrounds its policy listsReporting duty or appeal
West Virginia (MD)Seven: onboarding deadlines, unanswered correspondence, unreported legal or other indiscretions, a drop in academic achievement, unreported failing coursework or institutional actions, AAMC protocols, Choose Your Medical School Tool and school deadlinesReplies and post-check reports by the 5th working day
Zucker Hofstra (MD)Incorrect or misleading application information, the AAMC "Traffic Rules", its Admission Terms and Conditions, disciplinary, professionalism or technical standardsAppeal to the dean, "whose decision in all such matters is final"
UT Dell (MD, TMDSAS)Background check not favorable; activity not reported on TMDSAS; transcripts "materially different" from what you reported"immediately notify" the Associate Dean for Student Affairs of any criminal charge
UNM (MD)Unsatisfactory background check; discrepancy with the applicationOffers "contingent upon satisfactory criminal background investigation results"
USC Keck (MD)Omitted, false or misleading information; no consent to the background check or Live ScanReport within 72 hours; decision "is not appealable"
East Carolina Brody (MD)Not keeping "an acceptable level of academic achievement and personal deportment", or not completing degree requirementsFinal transcripts by June 30
Maryland (MD)Not responding to the offer within three weeksOffer withdrawn
Arizona Phoenix (MD)Materials not received, or "fraudulent or deceptive"; no Commit to Enroll 45 days before orientationOffer rescinded
CU Anschutz (MD)No Commit to Enroll by its deadline (June 27, 2026 for the class entering in 2026)Offer rescinded
AACOMAS (DO)Deposits paid to, or positions held at, more than one collegeWritten notice; deposit forfeited if you do not respond

West Virginia and Hofstra both say "for, but not limited to, the following reasons", so these lists are not complete. The Dell row is from the 2026-2027 Medical School Catalog.

The Maryland, CU Anschutz and AACOMAS rows turn entirely on deadlines and holding rules, not conduct. For the DO deposit schedule, see AACOMAS traffic guidelines and DO deposits; for the final step, see Plan to Enroll vs Commit to Enroll. The AMCAS traffic rules for 2027 set the national ones; each school adds its own.

Grades after acceptance

Your acceptance assumes your spring grades look like your application. West Virginia lists "Failure to maintain the same level of academic achievement that the applicant had prior to admission in the remaining coursework after acceptance and prior to matriculation" and, separately, "Failure to report any failing coursework or institutional actions after acceptance and prior to matriculation." East Carolina says a slip leads to "a re-examination of the applicant's credentials and the possible withdrawal of the offer to matriculate." Dell can rescind if transcripts are "materially different than what the student self-reported". Arizona Phoenix conditions matriculation on "Satisfactory completion of all required courses for admissions, as well as conferral of bachelor's degree."

Our view: if you fail or withdraw from a course after acceptance, tell the school before the final transcript does. At West Virginia, not reporting it is its own ground, separate from the grade.

The countercase: a single B where you usually earn A's is not "failing coursework", and none of these policies asks you to report ordinary grade changes. Report failures, withdrawals that affect a required course or your degree date, and institutional actions.

Background checks after acceptance

The AAMC recommends a background check at conditional acceptance, as UNM and Keck both note on their pages. Three rules follow from the policies above:

  • What you reported must match what the check finds. UNM: "Any discrepancy between the information reported during the application process and information uncovered during the background check may be grounds for rescission of acceptance". Dell treats unreported activity as "potential misconduct".
  • New events have a clock. Keck requires written reports "as soon as possible, but in no case more than 72 hours after the event in question." West Virginia requires post-check indiscretions to be reported "no later than 11:59 PM of the 5th working day after occurrence."
  • You get to see the report. UNM says applicants "will have the opportunity to verify the report's accuracy and to dispute any false information prior to the report being made available to the medical school." If the report is wrong, dispute it there.

Disclosure emails (constructed)

Both emails follow the same order: the fact, the date, the current status, what you are doing, and the documents you can send. Address the office the policy names: the Dean for Admissions at West Virginia, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs at Keck and Dell.

Constructed disclosure: a failed spring course

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. It is 119 words, including the subject line.

Subject: Report of a failed course: Jaime Ellis, AMCAS ID [number]

Dear Dr. Abernathy,

I am writing to report that I received a failing grade in Organic Chemistry II this spring, posted on May 19. It does not affect my degree, which my registrar confirmed will be conferred on May 30.

I am retaking the course this summer at my university, June 2 to July 25, and will send the final grade as soon as it posts. I have attached my unofficial transcript and the registrar's degree confirmation.

I understand this differs from the record you accepted me on, and I wanted you to hear it from me first. I am glad to answer any questions.

Sincerely, Jaime Ellis

Constructed disclosure: a charge after the background check

Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. It is 98 words, including the subject line.

Subject: Required report: Jaime Ellis, AMCAS ID [number]

Dear Dr. Abernathy,

Under the school's policy on reporting events after the background check, I am reporting that on June 8 I was cited for a misdemeanor, driving with a suspended license, after my license lapsed for an unpaid renewal fee. I have paid the fee and the license is reinstated. My court date is July 14.

I have attached the citation and the reinstatement notice, and I will send the court's disposition when I receive it.

I am glad to provide anything else the office needs.

Sincerely, Jaime Ellis

What both leave out: excuses, character references nobody asked for, and requests for reassurance. The facts must match the documents you attach.

Appeals after a rescinded acceptance

Read the policy before you write. Hofstra hears appeals at the dean's level, and the dean's "decision in all such matters is final." Keck says "The Associate Dean of Admissions decision is not appealable." West Virginia's policy names a five-person Rescission Committee and describes no appeal. If your school's policy gives an appeal, write it the same way as the disclosure: facts, dates, documents, what has changed.

Before matriculation: a checklist

  1. Every portal form, contract and deposit done by its date (see how to reply to a medical school acceptance).
  2. Every email from admissions answered within the school's window.
  3. Background check consent given, report reviewed, errors disputed.
  4. Any charge, citation or institutional action reported in writing, within the school's clock.
  5. Any failed or withdrawn course reported before the final transcript.
  6. Final transcripts and degree conferral sent by the school's date.
  7. Only one acceptance held after April 30 (MD), one college before May 1 (DO).

Questions about rescinded acceptances

Can a medical school rescind an acceptance for bad grades?

Yes, at schools whose policies say so. West Virginia lists a drop in academic achievement and unreported failing coursework; East Carolina lists not maintaining "an acceptable level of academic achievement".

Do I have to tell my medical school about a failed class after acceptance?

At West Virginia, yes: not reporting failing coursework is a listed ground. Elsewhere, your final transcript will show it, so telling the school first is the better order.

Will a background check issue cancel my acceptance?

Not automatically at Keck, whose policy says so directly. Omission or false information is what its policy says "will result in rescission". At UNM, offers are contingent on a satisfactory result.

Can a DO school rescind an acceptance?

Yes. AACOMAS says "An osteopathic medical college may rescind an offer of admissions to a candidate who has paid deposits to or holds positions at multiple institutions."

Review the writing you send next

A disclosure tells the school what has changed since it accepted you, which is the job of an update letter. Get a free Quick Review of your disclosure letter against GradPilot's medical school update letter rubric, which reads whether the letter identifies what has changed since your application and gives the reader an account it can act on. If you are writing to confirm your commitment to a school instead, use the medical school letter of intent and interest rubric.

More guides for accepted applicants are in the medical school essays hub. Traffic-rule rescissions often start with taking a waitlist offer after Commit to Enroll, which the rules treat as already withdrawn.
