How to Reply to a Medical School Acceptance Email
Reply to a medical school acceptance in the portal first. Deadlines run from 5 working days to 3 weeks. A reply sample, a questions email and thanks.
How to Reply to a Medical School Acceptance Email
The reply that matters is not an email. It is the portal response, contract or deposit the acceptance asks for, and it has a deadline: three weeks at Maryland, two weeks for the deposit at East Carolina, and five working days for any message from West Virginia's admissions office. A thank-you email back is optional and should be two or three sentences.
An email cannot hold your seat; the portal response can. Do the form first, the same week. Then write the short email, if you write one at all.
Every school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. Several state no year, so the dates in your own acceptance letter govern.
What the acceptance asks you to do
| School | What it asks | Deadline its page states |
|---|---|---|
| Maryland (MD) | Respond to the offer | "three weeks from the date of the letter of acceptance" |
| East Carolina Brody (MD) | $100 deposit, credited to tuition | "within two weeks of notification of acceptance" |
| CU Anschutz (MD) | Contract and technical standards forms | "Within two weeks of acceptance" (class entering 2026) |
| Arizona Phoenix (MD) | Use Plan to Enroll from February 19, 2027; no deposit | Commit to Enroll 45 days before orientation |
| AACOMAS (DO) | Matriculation documents, including a deposit | By December 14 if accepted before November 15; 30 days if accepted November 15 to January 14; 14 days if accepted January 15 to April 30 |
Two lines from these pages explain why the form beats the email:
"Failure to respond will result in the withdrawal of the letter of acceptance."
That is Maryland. And West Virginia's rescission policy expects replies to its messages "no later than 11:59 PM of the 5th working day from receiving correspondence." The full list of grounds schools publish is in why medical schools rescind acceptances.
Arizona Phoenix shows the other side: "At no time is a financial deposit required." A deposit is a school rule, not a universal one, so read your own letter.
Do you have to reply to the acceptance email?
You have to complete what the letter or portal asks, by its date. None of the pages above asks for a separate thank-you email.
If you already know you need a year before starting, the reply is a deferral request, sent before the school's deadline.
Our view: complete the portal steps within two or three days, even if you are holding several offers. Holding a seat is not your final choice: Duke's prehealth advising page says that for AAMC schools "you can hold more than one acceptance, continue to interview with other medical schools, and remain on alternate/waitlists up until April 30." Under the AMCAS traffic rules for 2027, the narrowing comes on April 15 and April 30, and Arizona Phoenix requires accepted students to use Plan to Enroll from February 19, 2027. If you know you will not attend, decline instead of holding the seat.
The countercase: if the acceptance comes from a waitlist close to orientation, or carries a scholarship with its own reply date, reply the same day. West Virginia's policy notes that applicants accepted from the waitlist "within a short time frame before matriculation" face their own background-check deadline.
A short reply to the dean (constructed)
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. It is 51 words, including the subject line.
Subject: Thank you: Laila Morales, AMCAS ID [number]
Dear Dr. Yildiz,
Thank you for your letter of October 20 offering me a place in the Class of 2031. I am honored, and I have completed the acceptance forms in the portal. I look forward to the next steps.
Sincerely, Laila Morales
It thanks, confirms the form is done and stops. It does not say "you are my first choice" or "I will definitely attend" unless that is true and decided. If you are still holding other offers, a promise in this email is the one sentence you would have to take back.
Emailing admissions with questions after acceptance
Yes, you can, after you have read the portal and the accepted-student pages. One email, numbered questions, each answerable in a line.
A second look invitation is worth accepting only if the school is still on your final list.
Constructed questions email
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. It is 80 words, including the subject line.
Subject: Questions about my acceptance: Laila Morales
Dear Admissions Office,
Thank you again for my acceptance. I have completed the portal forms and have three questions I could not find answered on the accepted students page:
- Is the deposit refundable if I withdraw before April 30?
- When will I receive my financial aid award?
- Is the background check request sent by email, and from whom?
Thank you for your help.
Best regards, Laila Morales AMCAS ID [number]
Aid questions go to the financial aid office if the school lists one. The money questions that decide between schools are in how to choose between medical school acceptances.
Thanking your interviewer after acceptance
Optional. If your interviewer or a faculty member did something specific for you, two sentences are enough, sent through the admissions office if you do not have a direct address.
Constructed interviewer thank-you
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. It is 37 words.
Dear Dr. Trivedi,
I was accepted this week, and I wanted to thank you for our conversation in September about rural rotations. It was the part of my interview day I thought about most.
Best, Laila Morales
The rules for finding the right address and avoiding accidental promises are the same as in medical school interview thank-you emails. Your letter writers get their own email once you have chosen a school: see the thank-you email to recommenders after an acceptance.
Before you hit send
- Portal forms, contract and technical standards done?
- Deposit paid, if the letter asks for one, by its date?
- Background check consent watched for? At USC Keck, the consent request comes by email from the screening company after January 1, not from the school.
- Reply sent within the school's response window?
- No promise to enroll unless you have decided?
- Questions checked against the portal first?
Questions about replying to an acceptance
Is it OK to email medical school admissions after acceptance?
Yes, with specific questions the portal does not answer. Keep it to one email with numbered questions.
Should I tell the school I am still deciding?
You do not need to. Completing the portal steps holds the seat while the traffic rules allow you to hold it. If they ask directly, answer truthfully.
What happens if I miss the response deadline?
At Maryland, "Failure to respond will result in the withdrawal of the letter of acceptance." At West Virginia, missed deadlines and unanswered correspondence are listed grounds for rescission. Contact the office the same day you notice.
Review the writing you send next
After this acceptance, the letter that needs a draft is the one to the single school you would still choose over it, if that school has you on its waitlist. Get a free Quick Review of your letter of intent against GradPilot's medical school letter of intent and interest rubric; it checks that the letter names a feature of that school behind your reason to attend and promises no more commitment than you can keep. For news a deciding school has not seen, the medical school update letter rubric checks that the letter says what changed and what it adds.
More guides for accepted applicants are in the medical school essays hub. If the acceptance came with a named award, the scholarship thank-you letter is a separate letter to the donor.
