Med School Reapplicant Timeline for the 2028 Cycle
A month-by-month medical school reapplicant plan from November 2026 to a May 2027 submission for fall 2028 entry, with the dates each system has posted.
Med School Reapplicant Timeline for the 2028 Cycle
If you are reapplying for fall 2028 entry, decide by the end of January 2027 whether 2028 is realistic. Last cycle, AMCAS submission began on May 28, 2026, so anything your new application must show (a new MCAT score, a semester of grades, months of new clinical work) has to exist by late May 2027. If it can't, you are planning for 2029.
Don't count forward from the day the application opens. Count backward, from the day you want to submit, and work out what must be finished by then. A reapplicant who submits on day one with the same file as last year has changed the date, not the application. Before you start, read our reapplicant essay guide: the essay is where every month below ends up.
Every application-service and school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. AAMC's AMCAS and MCAT pages returned HTTP 403 to our fetch that day, so AMCAS dates on this page come from school pages that restate them, and this page gives no 2027 MCAT test or score-release dates. Check the AAMC site yourself before you book a test.
What is posted for the 2028 cycle so far
The 2028 cycle opens in 2027 and fills seats in fall 2028; WMed's page, for example, lists "May 5, 2026: AMCAS opens for the 2027 cycle". Our 2028 cycle application timeline covers the cycle names and general dates; this table shows only what a reapplicant needs.
| System | 2028-cycle open date posted? | Last cycle (2027 entry) | Before the new cycle opens |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMCAS | Not checked (AAMC HTTP 403) | Opened May 5, 2026; submission from May 28, 2026 (MCW) | Save a copy of last year's application |
| AACOMAS | No; only 2026-2027 dates | Opened May 4, 2026 | Last cycle's PDF is "only available if you submitted that application to at least one program" |
| TMDSAS | No; only Entry Year 2026 and 2027 | Submission opened May 15, 8 a.m. CST; deadline October 1, 11:59 p.m. CST | Print your prior PDF; your application history "will NOT roll over" |
| ADEA AADSAS | Yes: opens May 11, 2027 | Opened May 12, 2026 (ADEA AADSAS dates) | Print your application "by May 10, 2027" |
| CASPA | No | Opened April 30, 2026 | Not on this page |
What carries over from last year's application, system by system, is on our reapplicant carry-over page. The short version for planning: essays and letters do not carry over in AACOMAS, TMDSAS, AADSAS or CASPA, so both go on the calendar below.
November to January: diagnose, then decide
Ohio State's reapplicant page sets the order: "It's your responsibility to find out why you were rejected." It suggests asking your premedical advisor and contacting the schools that rejected you. Some schools offer this formally. UND says applicants who were not admitted "may request feedback from the Office of Student Affairs & Admissions". Our rejection feedback email covers how to ask.
If your fix is a special master's year, start with the SMP personal statement and what each program asks for.
Then make the go/no-go call; the decision rule by weakness is on our rejected from all medical schools page. For the calendar, Ohio State's two worked cases set the bar: "wait at least one year before reapplying" after starting a full-time research job, and for an MCAT retake, "plan to take the MCAT in January or the next spring after months of preparation," then "apply the following summer for an entering class two years after your rejection."
Virginia Tech Carilion says the same in its reapplicant advice: "If there are significant gaps in your application that require time in order to strengthen your application, it may be best to wait before reapplying."
Our view: set your decision date for January 31, 2027. By then you know your feedback, your spring course schedule and whether a retake fits. If the fix you need won't show results by late May 2027, plan for the 2029 cycle and say so to your letter writers now.
The countercase: if the only problem was timing or the school list (you submitted in September, or applied to too few schools), nothing needs months to build. Reapply for 2028 and spend the spring on the essays.
February to April: build the evidence and the letters
This is the stretch where the new application gets made. Three jobs:
New evidence. Start the clinical role, research job or coursework that answers your diagnosis. Your reapplicant essay will report dates, hours and a result, so the role has to be under way by February to have anything to show in May.
The MCAT, if you are retaking. We could not open AAMC's 2027 MCAT calendar, so we can't give test or score-release dates. Last cycle's school limits show the late end. For the 2027 cycle, MCW's regular MD program accepted MCAT dates through September 12, 2026, Vanderbilt through "September 2026", and WMed through September 30, 2026. Those are the last dates a score counted, not good plans. Our view: book a test early enough that the score is out before you submit, so the schools see the result with the rest of the file. Use our MCAT retake decision framework to decide whether to retake at all.
Letters. You need new ones. TMDSAS says: "Letters of evaluation should be updated or come from new evaluators." UT Health Science Center's reapplication page says reapplicants "must update your pre-professional evaluation and letters of recommendation through AMCAS". Ask by March. A supervisor from the new role you started in February is the letter that proves the change. Our reapplicant letters guide covers who to ask.
April to June: rewrite, then submit early
Save last year's file first. ADEA tells AADSAS reapplicants to print their application by May 10, 2027. TMDSAS lets you print your PDF if you applied in the last five entry years. AACOMAS keeps last cycle's PDF in "Application PDFs" only if you submitted to at least one program. Do this before you edit anything, because you will compare old and new line by line.
Rewrite the personal statement. UT Health Science Center: "it is recommended that you update your AMCAS personal statement". Ohio State is stronger: "As a reapplicant, you must change something." A new opening is not a change. The statement should rest on the evidence you built in February to April. Start the rewrite in April, so it is final when submission opens.
Rewrite the activities. Add the new role with its real dates and hours. Cut or shorten entries that no longer earn their place.
Submit early. Last cycle MCW asked regular applicants to submit AMCAS by a preferred date of July 1, 2026 and began secondary invitations on July 6, 2026. TMDSAS opened submission on May 15, 2026. Aim for the first two weeks of submission, but don't submit an unfinished statement to make day one.
Summer: secondaries and the reapplicant essay
Some secondaries add a reapplicant question. For the 2026-2027 cycle, MCW required one of 2,000 characters, Belmont and WMed asked reapplicants at 2,000 characters each, and UND at 1,200 characters. TMDSAS puts a reapplicant essay inside the main application for anyone who answers YES to the prior-application question. That essay asks "what you've done to improve your application since a previous application cycle."
Your new role also becomes your gap-year secondary answer, which some schools ask separately.
Write a 2,000-character master answer in June, before invitations arrive. Cut it to each school's limit as secondaries come in, and keep the facts identical, because interviewers compare (see reapplicant interview questions). The structure for that answer is in our reapplicant essay guide.
Two constructed reapplicant calendars
Two constructed examples, written by us, not real applicants' plans. Both were rejected in the 2027 cycle.
Constructed calendar: Padma retakes the MCAT
Context (invented): Padma's feedback named her MCAT. She works full time.
| Month | Padma's plan |
|---|---|
| November-December 2026 | Asks two schools for feedback; takes a diagnostic test |
| January 2027 | Decision: a retake score won't exist by late May with full-time work, so she targets the 2029 cycle |
| February-December 2027 | Studies on a fixed schedule; keeps her clinical job; tells her letter writers the new date |
| Early 2028 | Takes the MCAT, following Ohio State's "January or the next spring" pattern |
| May-June 2028 | Submits for fall 2029 entry with the new score in the file |
Constructed calendar: Moses fixes his list and essays
Context (invented): Moses submitted in September last cycle and applied to 11 schools. His feedback named timing.
| Month | Moses's plan |
|---|---|
| November 2026-January 2027 | Gets feedback; decision by January 31: reapply for 2028 |
| February-March 2027 | Takes on a new shift lead role at his clinic; asks its director for a letter |
| April 2027 | Saves last year's application; rewrites his statement around the new role |
| May-June 2027 | Submits in the first week; drafts his 2,000-character reapplicant answer |
| July-August 2027 | Returns each secondary within two weeks |
Same rejection, two different cycles. Padma's fix needs months to produce a result; Moses's does not.
Your reapplicant checklist
- Feedback requested from your advisor and at least one school by December.
- Go/no-go for 2028 decided by January 31, 2027.
- New evidence under way by February, with dates you will report.
- MCAT date chosen so the score exists before you submit (check AAMC's calendar).
- New letters requested by March, including one from the new role.
- Last year's application saved before the new cycle opens.
- Personal statement and activities rewritten by mid-May.
- A 2,000-character reapplicant answer drafted by the end of June.
Questions about the reapplicant timeline
When should reapplicants submit AMCAS?
In the first weeks of submission, once the new statement and activities are final. Last cycle submission began May 28, 2026, and MCW's preferred date for regular applicants was July 1, 2026.
Should I reapply right away or wait a year?
Wait if your fix needs time to show a result: a retake, a year of research, a semester of grades. Ohio State and Virginia Tech Carilion both say so. Reapply right away if the problem was timing, the school list or the essays.
When are the 2028 AMCAS dates posted?
Not as of November 7, 2026, as far as we could check: AAMC's pages blocked our fetch, and AACOMAS, TMDSAS and CASPA show only last cycle's dates. ADEA AADSAS has posted May 11, 2027.
When should I start rewriting my personal statement?
In April 2027, after the new evidence exists. Rewriting in December gives you an essay about plans, not results.
Review the writing you send next
Your reapplicant essay is the document that has to show every change on this calendar. Get a free Quick Review of your reapplicant essay: it reads whether you name what needed to change, what you did differently, the proof of improvement and why you are ready now. The rewritten statement goes to the AMCAS personal statement rubric, which reads your motivation for medicine, the depth of your experiences and your reflection, from the medical school essay review.
