No Med School Interviews by December: What to Do

No interviews by December is not one situation. It is four. The AACOMAS cycle stays open until August 2, 2027, CASPA takes applications until April 1, 2027, ADEA AADSAS lists December 15, 2026 as the dental acceptance notification date, and TMDSAS rank lists are due January 29, 2027. What you do this month depends on which of those calendars you are on.

Most advice about a quiet December answers "is it over?" with encouragement. This page answers a different question: what each application service still lets you change, what it does not, and why the reapplication work should start now, while you wait, rather than after the last email arrives. If you are still in November, the interview invite timing guide covers school-by-school windows first.

Every service page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. AAMC's pages refused our automated fetch that day, so this page quotes no AMCAS dates or AAMC data.

Silence in December means different things by system

ServiceWhat its calendar says (2026-2027 cycle)What a quiet December means
AMCAS (MD)Not quoted: AAMC pages refused our fetch on November 7, 2026Each MD school runs its own interview window; read each school's page
AACOMAS (DO)Opened May 4, 2026; closes August 2, 2027 at 11:59 PM ETThe service is open, but "the individual program's deadline may differ"
TMDSAS (Texas MD and dental)Medical offers began October 15; rank deadline January 29 at 5 p.m. CST; match February 12Interviewed applicants rank schools by January 29; no new Texas applications are possible
ADEA AADSAS (dental)"Dec. 15, 2026" is the "2026–27 dental school acceptance notification date"; the service closes February 5, 2027December 15 is the acceptance notification date; "Each dental school has its own application deadline"
CASPA (PA)Opened April 30, 2026; last day to submit April 1, 2027 at 11:59 PM ETThe service is open; program deadlines vary

Sources: AACOMAS cycle dates, TMDSAS deadlines, ADEA AADSAS dates, CASPA cycle dates.

No national source we checked publishes the date interview invitations stop. The AACOMAS page says it plainly for its own system: "In some instances, the individual program's deadline may differ from the application's cycle dates." The same is true of interview seasons. Each school publishes its own, and some do not publish one at all.

Our view: in December, sort your schools by service and by each school's own interview window before you decide anything. An MD-only list and an MD-plus-DO list are in different positions, because the DO service is open for another eight months. The countercase: if your list is all early-window MD schools whose interview seasons end in January, a quiet December means more, and the reapplication section below is the one to act on.

What you can still change this cycle

Four things can still move a 2026-2027 file. Everything else waits for the next application.

  1. A real update, where a school accepts one. Update rules differ by school. Read the rule first in our list of medical schools that accept update letters, then write only if something changed since you applied. The update letter before an interview guide shows the structure.
  2. Unfinished secondaries. An incomplete file is not in review. If any are still open, see late medical school secondaries in November and December.
  3. Adding DO programs whose own deadline is still open. AACOMAS is open until August 2, 2027, but each program sets its own deadline. Check it under Add Program before you pay. The AACOMAS application guide covers the mechanics.
  4. Confirming every file is complete. Log into each school portal and check that letters and transcripts show as received.

What not to do: email every school asking about your status, resend the same essays as an "update", or add schools you would not attend. Columbia's postbac reapplicant toolkit quotes its own application-year guidelines on that last point: "Do not apply to any school you are not prepared to attend, if it should prove to be your sole acceptance." (Columbia GS toolkit, written for the 2025 admission cycle.)

Start the 2028 plan now, in parallel

Our view: begin the reapplication diagnosis in December and January, while files are still pending, not in May after the last rejection. The basis is lead time. ADEA AADSAS says its upcoming application "opens May 11, 2027" (a Tuesday) and recommends that reapplicants print their current application "by May 10, 2027" (ADEA re-applicants page). That was the only next-cycle opening date posted among the services we checked; AACOMAS, CASPA and TMDSAS had not posted 2027-2028 or Entry Year 2028 dates, and AAMC's pages refused our fetch.

A new MCAT score, a semester of grades or a year of clinical work cannot be created between a May rejection and a June submission. Ohio State's admissions page makes the point with its own example: an applicant waitlisted until "a week before classes started in August" who wants a higher MCAT should "forget about the next cycle and plan to take the MCAT in January or the next spring after months of preparation" (Ohio State reapplicant page).

The countercase: if you hold interviews or a waitlist spot, do not let planning distract from them. Parallel planning means reading your old file and booking an advising meeting, not withdrawing or sending reapplicant essays to schools still reviewing you.

What to do in December and January:

  • Download or print each submitted application. AACOMAS and CASPA offer a PDF of last cycle's application only "if you submitted that application to at least one program"; TMDSAS lets you print any application from the last 5 entry years.
  • Write a one-page list of what was weak: school list, timing, MCAT, grades, clinical hours, essays. Duke's prehealth office suggests the same questions, including "How well did my list of schools align with the competitiveness of my application?" (Duke prehealth advising).
  • Read what carries over when you reapply. Your essays and letters do not carry over in any service we checked.
  • Mark which weaknesses can change by May and which cannot. The 2028 reapplicant timeline turns that into dates.

Constructed example: two quiet Decembers

Constructed example, written by us, not real applicants.

Context (invented): Alessia Akinola applied to 24 MD schools only, mostly early-window schools. Dorian Demir applied to 15 MD and 6 DO schools.

Alessia (MD only)Dorian (MD and DO)
Still open this cycleUpdates at schools that take themUpdates, plus DO programs with open deadlines
Best December moveStart the reapplication diagnosis nowFinish DO secondaries first, then diagnose
What waits for MayEverything elseEverything else

Alessia has no open application she would add to, so her December is planning time. Dorian's DO programs are still reviewing, so his first job is the files in front of him.

How many rejections by February is normal?

No source we checked publishes rejections by month. AAMC's applicant data pages refused our automated fetch on November 7, 2026, so this page gives no national applicant or acceptance figures. A count of rejections also says little on its own: a list of 24 schools with three rejections and 21 silences is a different file from a list of 8 schools with three rejections.

What tells you more is where each file stopped. A file that was complete in August and drew no interview points at the school list, numbers or essays. A file that drew interviews but no offers points at the interview. The rejected from all medical schools guide uses that split to decide whether to reapply right away or wait a cycle.

Track notes: DO, Texas, dental and PA

DO (AACOMAS). The service is open until August 2, 2027, and you can add programs until a program's own deadline passes. If you reapply later, AACOMAS keeps your data only within three cycles: "application data is unavailable after three cycles of inactivity" (AACOMAS reapply page).

Texas (TMDSAS). The Entry Year 2027 medical deadline was October 1, so no Texas school can be added now. Texas medical schools could extend offers from October 15, the rank list is due January 29, 2027 at 5 p.m. CST, and match results come February 12, 2027 (a Friday). See how the TMDSAS match works.

Dental (ADEA AADSAS). December 15, 2026 is the acceptance notification date, and the service closes February 5, 2027. ADEA says "Each dental school has its own application deadline" and will not send an application received after it. The guide to applying to dental school in December checks several.

PA (CASPA). The last day to submit is April 1, 2027 at 11:59 PM ET, with earlier program deadlines. A PA application is a different career with its own CASPA statement, not a backup form for an MD file.

Questions about having no medical school interviews

Is it too late to get a medical school interview in January?

It depends on the school. Interview seasons are set school by school, and no national cutoff date is published in the sources we checked. The invite timing guide lists the windows schools publish.

Should I send an update letter if I have no interviews?

Only to schools that accept updates, and only with news that is new since you applied. A letter that repeats your application is not an update.

Can I still apply to DO schools in December?

The AACOMAS service is open until August 2, 2027, but each program has its own deadline. If the deadline is open and you would attend, yes.

When should I start planning to reapply?

Now, in parallel with any pending files. The next applications open in spring 2027, and anything that needs a new score or new grades has to start before then.

Review the writing you send next

If a school on your list accepts updates and you have real news, get a free Quick Review of your update letter: it checks whether the letter names what changed since you applied and what that adds to your file.
