Is It Too Late to Apply to Dental School in December?

At six of the nine dental schools we checked, yes. ADEA AADSAS stays open until February 5, 2027, but each school's own deadline decides, and AADSAS will not send your application to a school after that school's deadline. Of the 9 dental schools whose pages we checked, 3 accept applications after December 1, 2026: Boston University, Columbia and Tufts.

The AADSAS close date looks like a deadline. It is not yours. Rolling review fills interview days from late summer, verification takes weeks, and Pitt fills seats in the order deposits arrive. A December application competes for what is left. This page gives the nine-school table, the processing time that pushes a December file into January, what you can still add after you submit, and a procedure for deciding between applying now and waiting a cycle.

Every ADEA, Liaison and school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. Deadlines are as each page states them; where a page gives no year, the table says so.

The dates that matter

The 2026-27 ADEA AADSAS calendar:

DateEvent
June 2, 2026First day to submit
Dec. 1, 2026 to Feb. 5, 2027Second Academic Update period
Dec. 15, 2026 (Tuesday)"2026–27 dental school acceptance notification date"
Feb. 5, 2027 (Friday)"2026–27 ADEA AADSAS closes."
Feb. 11, 2027 (Thursday)"Last day to submit all official documents to ADEA AADSAS."

Two lines on the same ADEA page decide what a December submission can do:

"ADEA AADSAS will not send your application to a school if it is received by ADEA AADSAS after the school's deadline."

"After the ADEA AADSAS application, fee payment and official transcripts are received, it usually takes about four to six weeks to process an application."

Our arithmetic: a complete application received on December 10 is verified in about mid-January at four to six weeks. That is after December 15, the first day schools may make offers.

Which dental schools are still open in December?

These are the nine schools whose own pages we re-fetched on November 7, 2026. It is not a full list; check any other school on its own admissions page.

What a December file meets at the open schools

An open deadline is not an open class. Read what the late-deadline schools say about timing:

  • Penn: "Although the majority of the PDM applicant pool submit applications by September 1, all applications completed by the deadline date will be reviewed for interview consideration. Decisions to review late applications are at the discretion of the Admissions Selection Committee." Penn had 3,420 applicants for the class entering August 2026.
  • UIC: "A rolling admissions process is used with preference given to earlier applications."
  • Columbia: "Applicants are strongly urged to submit all materials as early as possible, as applications are considered on a rolling basis." Its waitlist runs "February through July."
  • Pitt (deadline not on the page we checked) fills seats by deposit: "Seats for the incoming class will be filled in the order in which deposits of individuals who have been offered admission to the University are received" (Pitt DMD admissions process).

Columbia's page also says its "first round of accepted applicants are notified through the AADSAS portal on December 1st in accordance with ADEA traffic rules." ADEA's 2026-27 calendar gives December 15, 2026 as the notification date, so the two pages disagree; ADEA's date is the one for this cycle. Our December 15 ADEA rules page covers the offer dates.

Our view: apply in December only to schools whose deadline is still open on the day your application will be complete, and whose interviews run past January. On this table only Columbia (interviews to February) clearly passes. Tufts and Boston University pass only if their offices confirm interview dates after January, because their pages give none. Penn and UIC interview into March but close on December 1.

The countercase: if you are a strong in-state applicant to a school with a late deadline, a December file can still reach an interview day. The table does not show residency preferences; UIC, for one, states "a strong preference for Illinois residents."

What you can still add after you submit

Liaison's Academic Update page lists what stays editable. For a late applicant, the line that matters is "Adding programs with deadlines that have not yet passed." You can also add evaluations while you are under the maximum and add new entries to some sections, but not edit existing ones; the AADSAS Academic Update guide walks through the full list. Anything else goes to schools directly, on their terms: UIC takes no documents by email after submission unless its admissions staff ask, and Penn says "Requests to omit any submitted letter of evaluation will not be honored."

So a late letter can go through AADSAS if you have room under the evaluation maximum, but it cannot be emailed to UIC afterward. The personal statement cannot change at all after submission. The AADSAS letters of recommendation guide covers the evaluation count, and the dental secondary short-answer guide covers the school questions you will write next.

Apply now or wait a cycle?

Run these checks in order. Each has a pass condition.

  1. Is the school's deadline still open on the day your application will be complete? Pass: the deadline is after that date. Fail: drop the school.
  2. Will you be verified before the school's last interview month? Pass: your submission date plus six weeks falls before that month (our arithmetic from ADEA's four-to-six-week processing note). Fail: drop the school.
  3. Do you have at least two schools that pass checks 1 and 2? Pass: apply now to those schools. Fail: wait.
  4. If you wait, will the 2027-28 file be different? Pass: you will add a new DAT, new grades or new experience by June 2027. Fail: applying now costs little extra, so apply to the passing schools anyway.

Constructed walk-through: two late applicants

Constructed example, written by us, not real applicants. Both scenarios are invented and use the rows of the table above.

Case 1. Hana has her DAT, letters and transcripts ready and can submit on December 5, 2026. Check 1: Penn and UIC fail (December 1); Boston University, Columbia and Tufts pass. Check 2: December 5 plus six weeks is mid-January; Columbia interviews to February, so it passes; Boston University and Tufts do not state interview months on their pages, so she emails each admissions office to ask. Check 3: if either confirms, she has two schools and applies now.

Case 2. Felix's DAT is scheduled for January 2027. The ADA reports scores to schools "within three to four weeks of the testing date" (DAT 2026 Candidate Guide), so his score arrives in February. Only Tufts is still open, and check 3 fails with one school. He waits, applies in June 2027, and uses the months to build the file. If he is reapplying after a rejection, the guide to reapplying after a dental school rejection covers that plan.

Questions about late dental school applications

What is the latest deadline for dental school applications in 2026-27?

The AADSAS cycle closes February 5, 2027. Among the nine schools we checked, the latest school deadline is Tufts, "February 2, 2027." Other schools may run later; check each school's own page.

Will a December application hurt my chances?

At schools with rolling review it competes for fewer interview days. Penn and UIC both say so in their own words above. Where a school states no preference for early files, nothing on its page tells you either way.

Can I submit my AADSAS application before my letters arrive?

Yes. Liaison lets you add evaluations after you submit if you are under the maximum. Schools review complete files, so the letters still have to arrive before the school's deadline.

Is it better to apply late or wait for next cycle?

Run the four checks above. Apply now if at least two schools pass checks 1 and 2. Otherwise wait and submit in June 2027.

Do I still have to write secondaries if I apply in December?

Yes, wherever a school requires its own application. Penn, for example, asks applicants to submit its supplemental application "only after receiving a formal email invitation." Write each one to that school's question.

It reads whether your answer does the exact job of the school's question with one bounded example and what that example shows. If your personal statement is not final yet, review it with the AADSAS personal statement rubric before you submit, because it cannot be edited afterward. The AADSAS personal statement review page explains that review.

If you hold offers later in the cycle, see holding multiple dental school acceptances. Applying to medical school too? The late medical school secondaries guide covers that calendar. More guides are in the medical school essays hub.
