Rejected From Dental School: Retake DAT or Rewrite?
Rejected from dental school? Find where your file stopped, retake the DAT only for a clear rise (all attempts are reported), reapply from May 11, 2027.
Rejected From Dental School: Retake DAT or Rewrite?
Find where your file stopped before you fix anything. No interview invitations points at your numbers or your school list. Interviews but no offer points at the interview. A DAT retake helps only if the score rises clearly, because the ADA sends schools a history of all testing attempts. The next ADEA AADSAS cycle opens May 11, 2027.
Strengthening every part of your application at once costs a year and fixes nothing in particular. This page gives you a diagnosis matrix, the DAT retake rules as the ADA writes them, the schools that say they will discuss a rejected file, and a month-by-month plan to the 2027-28 cycle. When you rewrite the essay, the dental school reapplicant personal statement guide covers that document.
Every ADA, ADEA and dental school page quoted below was checked on November 7, 2026. ADEA posts next-cycle dates on its reapplicant page; recheck it in spring 2027.
Where did your application stop?
Use the stage your file reached, not your feelings about it. This matrix is our framework, built from the rules and school pages quoted later on this page. No school publishes a matrix like it.
| Where you stopped | Likely cause | Fix before you reapply | What the new file must show |
|---|---|---|---|
| No interview invitations | DAT or GPA below the schools' published means, a list weighted to out-of-state publics, or a late submission | Retake the DAT (if the rules below say it can rise), add graded science coursework, rebuild the school list around in-state and published means | A new score, a new transcript, or a different list |
| Interviews, no offer | The interview, or a file that looked the same as stronger interviewees | Interview practice on the format each school uses; one new experience you can talk about | A changed story in the interview and a new experiences entry |
| Waitlisted, no seat | Seats ran out before your place on the list came up | Apply in the first submission week; keep the same schools | The same strengths, submitted earlier, plus updates |
| Submitted after September | Rolling review filled interview days first | Submit in June | An earlier verification date |
Our view: fix the stage you failed and leave the rest alone. A reapplicant who interviewed at four schools and retakes a 500 DAT has spent three months on the wrong problem.
The countercase: if you never got verified until October or later, you cannot tell which row you are in. Timing hid the signal. Treat that cycle as untested, fix the timing first, and change the content only where a school told you what was missing.
What the national numbers say
ADEA's report on the 2025 entering class counts 13,657 applicants and 7,073 first-time, first-year enrollees, or 51.8% of applicants enrolled. For the 2024 entering class the figures were 12,491 and 6,719 (53.8%). The same report shows that 33.8% of applicants but 52.5% of enrollees had a DAT Academic Average of 21 or higher on the old 30-point scale. ADEA's 2025 report publishes no acceptance rate for reapplicants, so any reapplicant "success rate" you see elsewhere is not ADEA data.
For per-school means on the new 200–600 scale, use our dental school acceptance rates by GPA and DAT table.
Should you retake the DAT? The rules first
The DAT 2026 Candidate Guide (updated 12/11/2025) sets the limits:
"Candidates must wait 60 days between testing attempts on the DAT, with a maximum of four (4) such administrations permitted during any 12-month period."
"Candidates with three (3) or more attempts on the DAT must apply for permission to test again, providing proof of recent application to dental school with each subsequent application to test."
"If a candidate has tested more than once, a history of all testing attempts is reported."
The guide also says "DAT Scores cannot be voided at the request of a candidate after completing any part of the examination." Results reach schools "within three to four weeks of the testing date." Scores run from 200 to 600; the 1–30 scale was replaced on March 1, 2025.
| Rule | What it means for a reapplicant |
|---|---|
| 60 days between attempts | A failed retake in March leaves you a May attempt at the earliest |
| All attempts reported | A flat or lower retake sits on your file next to the first score |
| No voiding | You cannot test "for practice" and hide it |
| 3 or more attempts need permission | A fourth try requires proof you applied, such as a rejection letter |
| 3 to 4 weeks to report | Test by early May to have a score before a June submission (our arithmetic) |
School deadlines tighten this. LSU says "The DAT should be taken (or retaken) no later than August 1, in order for your scores to reach LSUSD by our application deadline of Sep. 1st" and "If you are retaking, be sure to update your scores on the AADSAS portal" (LSU School of Dentistry application tips). Iowa says "Official DAT scores must be received and verified by AADSAS on or before the September 30 application deadline" (Iowa application process).
Our recommendation: retake only if all three are true. Your Academic Average sits below the published mean of the schools on your list. You can name what you will study differently. You can test by early May 2027. If one is false, put the time into coursework or the interview. The MCAT retake decision framework applies the same logic to a different test.
Ask the school what went wrong, where it offers that
Some dental schools say in writing that they will discuss a rejected file. Others say they will not. Ask only where the school publishes an offer, and only after the date it gives.
| School | What its page says | Checked |
|---|---|---|
| University of Illinois Chicago | "Reapplicant advising is available following the close of the cycle after April 1 of each year." (UIC DMD) | November 7, 2026 |
| University of Kentucky | "Guidance is offered to those declined after the spring semester has begun." (UK DMD admissions) | November 7, 2026 |
| Pittsburgh, international advanced standing program only | "do not request reasons and explanations for why you were not interviewed/accepted." (Pitt IASP FAQ) | November 7, 2026 |
Pitt's line covers its program for internationally trained dentists, not its DMD program. We found no published policy for the other schools on this page, so treat silence as "not offered" and do not email.
Constructed example: a file review request
Constructed example, written by us, not a real applicant's email. Context (invented): Selin Arslan interviewed at the school in November and was declined in March.
Subject: Reapplicant advising request, AADSAS ID 00000000
Dear Admissions Office,
I was declined for the class entering in August 2027 after interviewing on November 12. Your page says reapplicant advising is available after April 1. I would like to schedule a session.
I plan to reapply in the 2027-28 cycle. Two questions would help me most: was my file held back by my academic record or by my interview, and is there one part of my application you would want to see changed?
I can meet by phone or video at any time that suits your staff.
Sincerely, Selin Arslan
That email is 100 words, subject line included. It cites the school's own offer, asks two questions a staff member can answer in a sentence, and asks for nothing the school did not offer.
Gap year, post-bacc or master's?
Decide by what the matrix row says, not by what sounds impressive. The University of Florida's growth year and reapplicant page is among the most specific public guidance we found:
"A growth year will NOT be held against you in the application review, providing you have been productive in preparing for dental school during the year."
"For UFCD, you will need to complete at least two semesters of your master's coursework, with grades on a transcript received by ADEA AADSAS"
"A master's program GPA that is the same or lower than your undergraduate GPA, will not be a clear indication that you can easily handle a difficult dental school curriculum."
UF's waitlist page adds that reapplicants "are strongly encouraged to show substantial improvement in all areas of the application."
| Your problem | Best fit | The timing catch |
|---|---|---|
| Science GPA below your schools' means | Graded upper-level science, post-bacc or a science master's | UF wants two master's semesters on an AADSAS transcript, so a master's started in fall 2027 points at the 2028-29 cycle (our arithmetic) |
| DAT only | Retake; keep working | Score by early May 2027 |
| Interview only | Work in a dental office and interview practice | Nothing to wait for; reapply in June 2027 |
| Thin dental exposure | Paid work in a dental practice or lab, which UF names | Hours must be logged before you submit |
Our view: a reapplicant with a GPA problem should accept a two-cycle plan rather than reapply in 2027 with one new semester. One semester barely moves a cumulative GPA: 15 credits of straight A grades on top of 120 credits at 3.20 lifts it to 3.29 (our arithmetic).
The countercase: if your GPA is at your schools' means and you were waitlisted, a gap year of coursework adds nothing. Reapply in June with the same list.
Timeline to the 2027-28 cycle
ADEA's reapplicant page gives the dates and the carry-over rules:
"It is recommended that reapplicants print their ADEA AADSAS application for reference by May 10, 2027"
"The upcoming ADEA AADSAS application opens May 11, 2027"
Experiences, achievements, coursework and DAT history transfer. The personal statement, letters of evaluation, program materials and school designations do not; the reapplicant personal statement guide quotes ADEA's full list. The page also says "Letters of Evaluation must be newly uploaded each cycle".
For reference, the 2026-27 AADSAS calendar opened May 12, 2026, took first submissions June 2, 2026 and closes February 5, 2027. ADEA had not posted a first-submission date for 2027-28 when we checked.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Now to March 2027 | Diagnose with the matrix; book a DAT date if the retake test passes |
| April 2027 | Ask for advising where a school offers it (UIC after April 1) |
| By May 10, 2027 | Print last cycle's application |
| May 11, 2027 | Open the new application; re-enter the personal statement and program materials |
| May 2027 | Request new letters of evaluation |
| June 2027 | Submit in the first submission week |
One money rule: Liaison's refund policy says "reapplicants accepted after June 1 to the previous cycle can request a refund. Requests must be made within two weeks of the acceptance". If a waitlist offer arrives after you have paid for the new cycle, ask within two weeks.
If a school still has you on a waitlist this cycle, the AADSAS Academic Update guide covers the update you can send before you reapply. If interviews were the problem, start with the dental school interview questions and answers and the dental MMI scenarios.
Questions about reapplying to dental school
Do dental schools see all my DAT scores?
Yes. The ADA's guide says "a history of all testing attempts is reported," and scores cannot be voided.
Can I reuse my AADSAS personal statement?
No. The personal statement is on ADEA's list of items that do not transfer to the new cycle, so you type it in again. Rewrite it around what changed; the reapplicant statement guide shows how.
What is the dental school reapplicant acceptance rate?
ADEA does not publish one in its 2025 entering-class report. The national figure it does publish is 51.8% of 2025 applicants enrolled as first-time, first-year students.
Is it better to reapply right away or wait a year?
Reapply right away if you were waitlisted, interviewed widely, or applied late. Wait a cycle if your science GPA is the problem and the fix is coursework that will not be on a transcript by June 2027.
Do I need new letters of evaluation?
Yes. ADEA says "Letters of Evaluation must be newly uploaded each cycle". Ask at least one writer who saw your work during the gap year. The AADSAS letters of recommendation guide covers counts and committee letters. Before you decide you were rejected, check the dental school decision timeline: several schools make offers into the spring.
